UCLA has pivoted forward in a big way on the branding and marketing front.

Earlier this year Under Armour pulled out of its $280 million sponsorship agreement with UCLA, but now the Bruins have landed a much more impactful deal, they believe, with Nike and Jordan Brand. UCLA will become the first college football program on the West Coast and just the fifth in college football to partner with the Nike sub brand synonymous with the iconic Jumpman logo to supply gear and apparel.

Looks like a nice move for the Southern Branch.

This paragraph of the article caught my eye:
Quote:

Jarmond, who was named the Bruins' AD in May, had fostered relationships with Nike executives during his time working at Ohio State. He didn't want to lock in the Bruins to a long-term contract in the midst of a pandemic with little to no leverage.
It's good for UCLA that their AD has connections that he is using to the program's advantage. Which begs the question, does Knowlton have connections that are providing major benefits to Cal, and if so what are those benefits?

Have to see how much it's worth before jumping to conclusions.

UCLA is still suing UA for damages/breach of contract, so they could get a lot of money on top of this. In fact, the Jordan deal might help define what the damages to UCLA actually are, and might help push a reduced dollar amount settlement like between UA and Cincy. Depends on if that force majeure clause - the one that was NOT in some of the other UA contracts - is problematic.

This absolutely. Remember, Cal was a Jumpman school prior to UA....except Nike didn't give squat to Cal financially.

I wanted us to go back to Jumpman, but now I don't want to copy UCLA.

How about we do something fresh and go with Beastmode?

I believe there are only 5 Jordan Brand schools currently in college football. Florida, Oklahoma, Michigan, North Carolina and now UCLA. For college basketball it's 9 teams, including the 5 teams listed above plus Georgetown, Houston, San Diego State and Marquette.

Another example of why we are #2 public university. UCLA being proactive while we sit on the sidelines.

Just to add some complexity to the Cal situation. My understanding is UA ultimately did not terminate Cal's contract, whether due to Cal not having the bad language in its binding LOI that UCLA has in its contract, or that Cal was not really that unprofitable. Cal was shipped all its new UA clothes/gear (which is a big part of Cal's compensation), where UCLA's contract was terminated and they rec'd no new clothes/gear. So UCLA was forced to go to a new clothing sponsor. Put another way, Cal's situation is different (for those that think Cal can jump to a new sponsor right now), though Cal was somewhat pessimistic about the relationship long term. My information is about 4 months old so someone like Sebasterbear may have more updated info.

Let's be real, if Cal is still getting full cash payments and product from UA, we are not going to find a better deal.

So it doesn't do any good to drool over other schools' deals, which Cal wasn't going to get anyways.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Having said that, am I the only one that finds this Jordan brand sponsorship for football teams strange?!

It seems silly to have the Jumpman logo on a football uniform but if that's the new direction for sports fashion, we might as well get on the train.

I recently saw that the Beast Mode Cal gear was back in stock and ordered myself two shirts, and let me just tell you, the quality is horrible compared to pre-Fanatics. Not sure if you meant the fan gear available to us or the uniforms and gear the athletic department gets, but let us not forget that Fanatics is hot garbage.

Cal might sign with lululemon.

Or Victoria's Secret.

If we go with Lululemon the quality of the gear would go up.

If we sign with Victoria's Secret our TV ratings would go up.

agree. jumpman should be hoops only. i don't get a basketball player on a football jersey, any more than I'd understand a silhouette of a football player on a basketball jersey

yeah, but nike started that in the early 2000s with non basketball athletes on jordan brand and them betting signature shoes/products. derek jeter baseball cleats/batting gloves/sweatbands, roy jones jr boxing shoes (and andre ward recently), randy moss football cleats/turf shoes, federer tennis.... nike knows what they're doing and the athletes like it.

school edition jordan 1, 3, 11's go a long way in the minds of many 20 year olds.
