The negative is that everything about interactions works on JavaScript. So it's hard to edit, reply, star etc.
But you can browse freely.
Thank you for taking the time to type up these instructions. I tried it and yes it did get rid of the pop ups but as you also pointed out it made the site unusable. I couldn't even get to any of the forums. I was stuck on some main page I'd never visited before. Maybe I'll try an ad blocker. It's annoying but maybe not that annoying. Again, I'm not paying so...
I get more annoyed with all the ads on YoutubeTV after paying more and more for it. If my wife and kids didn't mind I'd cancel it. Charge me or advertise the hell out of me but don't do both.
I only really use that method for the NYT and other pay-walled sites that dont allow "outline.com"
It wont load images or interactive content, but you can read the story just fine. It stops the overlay asking you to subscribe from popping up.
This doesnt help for mobile, but at home look into plugging in a "pihole" It is maybe too much effort for most of us, but maybe some tech savvy kid can help. What it does is pre-block ad traffic before it gets to your devices from your router. No Hulu ads, no youtube ads, no web ads. It just kills it all. You may get a blank screen for the minimum time the ad would be up, but no ad. Hulu often just skips ahead to the next ad, and then to the show, so like a 5 second pause.
Also, the admins here not deleting my posts about how to stop revenue show they do care about the experience, I just wish they were able or willing to move forward.
