For the first time since February 29, 2020, I was in Berkeley during a Cal home basketball game. For the first time since February 1978, I was in Berkeley during a Cal home basketball game and was NOT inside Harmon/Haas. Weird, but at least the Bears won.

Went to Yogurt Park after the game. I'm on Bancroft/Durant/Telegraph around 9:15 on a Saturday night shortly after a 7 pm basketball game, and Berkeley has a post-apocalypse feel. No other customers at Yogurt Park. A few homeless mostly without masks and a few others mostly with masks, but largely a ghost town. I'm sure it was bad before the February campus lockdown, but this must be worse. Weird to think there was just a glorious Cal win nearby.

When all else is strange, at least we can still say, GO BEARS!
What a picture of sadness and jubilation (the Cal win) at the same time.

The last time I visited Berkeley was on January 26, 2020 to attend the Cal game at Haas v. Furd. It was a paradoxical time as well because it was the day that Kobe died, yet we beat Furd. And yes, I also went to Yogurt Park (good as ever), as well as Top Dog, Jupiter (before the game) and Raleigh's (after to celebrate).

Strange times indeed. I hope Telegraph Ave. is bustling again very soon.

"This one stings," CU coach Tad Boyle said. "We talked about in the pregame, Cal is a team that's playing better. They're a helluva lot better than their record, I can tell you that."

Yup. Sometimes competitive basketball, even in repeated defeat, really means competitive basketball.

My favorite moment of the game (other than the final buzzer, of course) was when Matt Bradley was seen playfully pounding his fist into Coach Fox's chest after a brief sideline chat near the end of the game when it seemed cal had it won. There's been good discussion about Fox, but the fact that he has kept this team focused and hungry through a hugely difficult season in so many ways, is definitely a big mark on the plus side for him.

Is Matt Bradley the best offensive player cal has had since Ryan Anderson. He is 100% focus of opponents' defensive strengths and focus, and yet he is almost unstoppable towards his relatively efficient 20+ per game. Plus, he plays with a joie de vivre combined with toughness that is fun to watch. And I just realized last night that it's Mike Tyson who he reminds me of. And that's pretty cool, too.
