Both sat out of last night's Apple Cup. Those watching the Wazzu/USC game on ESPNU before Cal's Saturday night game against Colorado might've seen Bonton had to be helped from the court in the last minute of the game after injuring both ankles. Green is out with a "non-COVID illness" according to UW-focused reporters.

Obviously, hope both recover but Cal's chances of winning this week's games go up quite a bit if they have to sit.

Expect both to play vs Cal

WSU coach thought Bolton to play vs UW, so it's probably not bad

I don't know how much that was actually expecting versus media posturing to keep UW a bit in the dark for game-planning. I watched it happen and Bonton literally had to be helped off the court. Maybe it wasn't as bad as it looked, but it looked bad.

Not saying he doesn't play on Thursday, and I'm certainly no trainer or doctor, but seeing him play on Monday seemed pretty unrealistic.

As of now, KenPom gives Cal a 35% win chance at Wazzu and 49% win chance at UW. If Bonton and Green are both out, I'd personally up those stats to 55%-65% at Wazzu and 60% for UW.

UW has Stevenson and Tsohonis that can take a lot of those minutes Green has had at the PG, but there is a much more significant drop-off from Bonton to Ryan Rapp or Noah Williams, IMO.

Or you're right and both Green and Bonton end up playing. But, even so, I don't see them being 100%.

I read that Bonton had an unusual injury (not your typical way you sprain an ankle such as landing on someone's foot). It was Bonton's coach who said he expected him to play for the UW game.

can you describe what happened?

I watched Bonton injure his ankle late in the WSU-USC game. Announcers said that he injured the "non-injured" ankle as he already had an injured ankle coming into the game. MB is right that he had to be helped out of the court. I will be surprised if he plays against Cal, although a 19 year old's body could be very resilient (when I was 19, a Soccer ankle injury kept me out for only two or three days, while today the same ankle injury keeps me hobbling for two or three months).

Go Bears!

this is what I read...

Near the end of Saturday's loss too USC, Bonton, according to coach Kyle Smith, "caught his shoe" on a gap in the floor and "somehow ended up rolling both ankles."

At the time, Smith didn't have a specific diagnosis on his top scorer, but the coach was optimistic Bonton would be available to play against the Huskies, telling reporters "I think he'll be back Monday. He's a little shook up. He wants to play in that game Monday, but hopefully he can."

Green missed the game because he was sick (non-covid related, so should be back for the Cal game)
