We need a consistent point guard.

That is key, particularly in college. The point has to be able to execute what the coach wants. Paris Austin did so in the last half of last season, which was part of why we finished strongly. This year, Hyder hasn't done much and Brown is wildly inconsistent, with good games balanced by disappearances like what occurred yesterday. Again, the question is going to be whether Fox can get these guys to improve over this off season so we have a serviceable field general. If there's no player improvement, next year should be Fox's last.

I thought the big difference with Paris Austin was improved defense and I credit Fox for that.

The way things are going now I'd try Bradley and/or Celestine at PG or come up with more of a positionless scheme which doesn't have the ball in one player's hands so much.

Look, we need a consistent everything that isn't named Bradley. If for some reason Bradley decided to transfer, Nathan could warm up those mid 200 sagarin ratings for next season.

Agree with this. The skills on the team are very low. Among players returning next year only Bradley, GA, Kelly and Celestine have Pac12 level basketball skills. I think the key to the team next year is refining Joel Brown and KK's skills, as I have little hope for the others. The "offense" Cal runs is less reliant on a 1990s point guard, but it does require ball handling skills at most positions, and such skills are lacking in many of the players.

(I honestly think Fox should be gone today, tomorrow, the sooner the better, but it is possible he could lead a team to mediocrity. He has done it before. But what I want is unrealistic and serves no purpose until there is a competent AD.)

They already have that. But since the offense is so disjointed, it often ends up Bradley or someone else against the world. The ball is not in the PGs hand particularly after it is brought up the floor.

I had hopes for Hyder when he became eligible and as recently as the UCLA game, I was encouraged. But he's played poorly the last several games. And I always thought Brown could become a Prentice McGruder type of player, but I dunno - I see a lot of random motion without real impact. I recorded the WSU game but from the sounds of things, there's no real point in watching . . .

I'm more of a KenPom and Bart Torvik guy. Never been much of a Sagarin fan.

Exactly! The hard truth is that we have only one Pac-12 quality player on our roster. That's not going to win us many games. If Fox can't recruit better, he needs to move on.

Have ever gotten a transfer that we didn't complain about? Maybe Matt Beusert. Probably spelledlast name wrong. Was from NotreDame.

More recently I liked Grant Mullins. Also Marcus Lee, whose game had some flaws but he really helped us at a time of need.

Huh our transfers have generally been good. They just shouldn't be depended on to be among your best players. But we have to right now.

Name one college basketball arena that can seat that many people

If you were to ask me who should stay and who should go, I would say keep Knowlton (he's not bad), and fire Fox. I respect Smith, the problem lies with some of her assistants and the injuries her best players suffered at the beginning of the season (Crocker and Green, in addition to Elsnitz). WBB's loss of Alaysia Styles to transfer also didn't help at all

There are 17 college arenas that go 18,000 or more. Haas Pavilion is No. 67.

And Syracuse(my mom's alma mater)'s Carrier Dome tops out at 33,000. That's crazy. To my understanding, Haas is one of the largest arenas in the Pac 12 after Utah's, Arizona's, and Oregon's

Yep. And they can pack it out, too.

Here are Pac-12 arenas and their national rank:

Huntsman Center, Utah - 15,000 (No. 37)
McKale Center, Arizona - 14,545 (No. 43)
Pauley Pavilion, UCLA - 13,800 (No. 47)
Knight Arena, Oregon - 12,369 (No. 63)
Haas Pavilion, Cal - 11,877 (No. 67)
Beasley Coliseum, Wazzu - 11,671 (No. 68)
Coors Center, Colorado - 11,064 (No. 77)
Wells Fargo Arena, Arizona State - 10,754 (No. 81)
Galen Center, USC - 10,258 (No. 94)
Alaska Airlines Arena, UW - 10,000 (No. 106)
Gill Coliseum, Oregon State - 9,604 (No. 111)
Maples Pavilion, Stanford - 7,329 (No. 165)

So Haas is fifth in the pac-12 in arena size. Pretty impressive. Another note- Coors center is now called CU events center as we all know

I believe Haas Pavilion is also among the 10 oldest arenas still in use and second-oldest in the P12.

Any guesses which is the oldest in the P12 without Googling?

I will guess Gill

To get Haas to #10 are they counting the building that existed before the remodel?

I was a big fan of Billy Dreher, who was strong his first year and then lost confidence his second year. Great transfers also include Geno Carlisle and Ed Gray. Cal has done well with transfers.

We are not going to get a quality PG until the 22-23 season. I'm assuming Fox will land a quality PG among the 6-7 lads he is recruiting. ( No new PG is coming in next year.. )

Good guess, but apparently it's what is now called Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle.

And, I believe so, 1933 is the first year listed.

The transfers don't forget Mark McNamara who transferred from Santa Clara, one of our best centers ever.
