74-63 final.

Bright spots:

Betley and Hyder hit some outside shots (also badly missed some others).
Brown had a couple of neat assists.
Kuany got some extended minutes and played pretty well.

Less bright:

Our two best players didn't have their best games.
A few bad defensive lapses in the middle of an otherwise decent defensive effort.
Some terrible turnovers where a Duck would want the basketball and just take it from us.
Ice cold for the first ten minutes: We dug a hole for ourselves.

Overall: ONLY MILDLY COMPETITIVE

Hyder playing well
Hyder is doing some things well (hitting some shots and a nice pass to Lars after drawing people to him), but he is also making some bad plays. He dribbles WAY too much, basically killing any kind of offense. His dribble, dribble, dribble and then jack up fall away 17-20 footers that aren't even close is not good offense and not what you want from your point guard. He also just turned the ball over on the press, then let the guy have a wide open 3 to put them up 16. I think the issue is that we have him playing point guard when he is obviously NOT a point guard. Problem is, we don't have anyone to back up Brown really. I also don't think Hyder shoots well enough to be considered a shooting guard.

I question Bradley coming back next year just because the dude is a warrior and it has to be really frustrating playing on a team that is so bad.

Our offense isn't doing anyone any favors either. It is all too easy to defend. All Oregon has to do is switch on our movement and we run right to where the defender is. The only one who backdoors is Bradley and it only happens 1-2x per game. Very few off ball screens after the initial set, and when we do set them, we set them poorly.

I would much prefer Fox play the young guys and we move on from Foreman, Betley and Anticevich. We need to play our more athletic players and get them some experience.

Some good ideas. I agree about Bradley, but what are Matt's options?
Matt will be back to finish his degree and he knows he needs to improve as well to get where he wants to. Great young man, respectful, driven and focused. Personally hope there is some attrition elsewhere, to allow the program to upgrade our athleticism.

4thGen, do I understand correctly that -- next season only -- teams in college hoops can exceed the normal schollie limit (due to the pandemic)? By how many? If so, then keeping guys like Foreman only hurts us in terms of possible lack of minutes for the up=and-comers.
Yes that is correct and I agree with you - this team would be better off without both grad transfers coming back and a Euro player as well. While the conventional argument is more "good players" leads to better practice simulations/competition (and I agree up to 12+-) having 13-15 decent players creates 3-4 dispirited players emotionally at some point. Monty said it well when asked why he choose a couple of lesser players at the end of his World Games roster (over better individual players) "one to two moaning players over playing time creates a less than ideal locker room atmosphere" I agree that point guard play needs to be more consistent next season. However I believe until we improve our post play and rim protection, we will not have a winning conference record. Teams have their way going to the hoop and generally rebounding and our interior offense, misses far too many put backs. The isolated close in shots we get, should be 70%+ made shots.

Foreman with the floater but miss

He needs to master that shot in off season

Especially for a shooter like him who will have opportunities to go by poor close-outs and get into the key.

I mean, if Bradley wanted to transfer, his options would be endless. At this point, we have no reason to believe he would transfer. But programs would be lining up for him.

That's my view of Hyder as well, exactly. It seems like he goes into end-of-clock go-to-work mode when there's still like 12-15 seconds on the shot clock. And it never ends well, and reflects poorly on his ability to be an effective PG.

I could live with moving on from Foreman and Betley, but I'm still a big believer in GA. One thing he showed today that won't go in the stats is how Oregon's press, which gave everyone trouble today, just melts away when GA gets the ball. He's smart, poised, passes very well, and has the height to see and pass over the defense. The stress caused by Oregon's press today disappeared when the ball got in GA's hands, and GA's passes in those situations immediately advance the ball effectively up the court. His shooting has been off second half of this season, but I think he's been hampered by injury and conditioning (resulting from injury). I haven't done the research, but I'd bet his prior stats would bear out that he can be counted upon to be a better shooter than he has been over the past month.

I like 2K potential

I like his potential, too, but I actually liked it more last year. I've been disappointed with him this season. I was very excited about him after last season, but to me it seems like he has not progressed this season. I give him a little slack because it seems covid restrictions hit his development hard (maybe even more so than others because of travel restrictions?)

So I'm hopeful he'll make big strides this off-season. His body is terrific and last year he showed a nice shot from the perimeter.

Up-and-comers are fine as long as they up and come. Next year you can be sure Fox will be playing players who up and come the most. Being a frosh or sophomore doesn't necessarily mean you are an up-and comer. it simply means you are a frosh and soph. Afrosh who is a c- player will pretty much be a c- player when he is a senior.

Surely. But he will be weighing that against one more year to get his Cal degree. (Possibly relevant: With all these crazy new transfer rules, will undergrads transferring after this season need to sit out a year? And, if so, under what circumstances?)

It's rarely possible, but a fear I might have would be that he could graduate after this summer and go somewhere else as a grad transfer, a la Jordan Mathews. I hope that mentioning this doesn't jinx it (or give him any ideas, lol).

Anyway, good sources here (MB and 4thGen) say he'll be back next season, so I want to believe that.

Not the same since his appendicitis.

GA had BY FAR his best weekend ever (against the LA schools?) in games 3-4 after his return from surgery, IIRC.

I agree in general, though: Let him get his best off-season work ever and then see if he can be consistently good next year. When he's "on", he's our second or third best player.

matches my thoughts exactly

he shows flashes, but nothing more than one or two a game

he also seems to always get called with a questionable calls, like today, when he was just tracking a ball handler, and then they just jumped into his. I don't see how that can be a foul.

he needs to work on his shooting in the off season (put a higher arc on his ball)

This, to me, would be the only fear about losing him. But, again, there are absolutely zero indicators at this point he'd even consider leaving. Obviously, anything can happen, but at this point, nothing indicates other than he's all-in on Cal. I wouldn't spend time worrying about it.

One thing I want to note about Coach Fox. My comment isn't exactly original since the announcers comment on it every game. But I want to take it a step further. It's this: I REALLY appreciate that he dresses in a proper suit for the games.

The message it sends to the players, while they play in empty arenas in a very weird season, is SO good and SO important. It sends the message that we always do things the right way, and with our full effort, even when the full lights aren't on us. And I think it's also a great gesture of respect to the players, who I'm sure are giving it their all.

Huge kudos to Coach Fox for this.

I agree Fox looks good in a suit. But that's very low on my list of priorities. Maybe it's a generational thing. During my formative years at Cal in the late 1960s I encountered quite a few well-dressed people who happened to be unpleasant and/or incompetent. BTW I could say the same about quite a few nearly-undressed people. Ever since I've done my best to look beyond the packaging.

Actually I DID mean Kelly (To be honest, I happened to have missed his coast-to-coast.). Let's look it up... 12 pts, 6 rebs. You say he had a "great game". I say he "didn't have his best game", meaning one of his few best games this season.

Was Kelly doing a lot of the "little things' that good players do, that don't make the stat sheet? (honest question) It seemed to me like the Ducks were getting a lot of inside shots and we needed some rim protection.

No, Grant didn't have a very good game at all. I'd like to see him be more consistent next season.
