Just a non-specific response (to the last post in the thread). I'm not sure how to post without it looking like a response.

Thanks. Now that you pointed it out it's obvious.

Gutty effort by the Bears, Thought Fox's plan to play a lot of players was smart given we played last night and would have to play again tomorrow night if we had won this one. Really tired of all the complaining about Fox on this board. I believe he is a decent coach who deserves more support from the fan base. Let's see what he does next year in hopefully a regular season and with more weapons in his arsenal. I am with Drizzly bear and have a more positive outlook for the future especially if Thorpe can learn to play defense. Looks like his offensive game is coming along. Can't wait for next year. Go Bears.

Fox is dreadful. The players tried hard but they need help. The offense would be no worse if there was no coach. Colorado was cold last night, and with a decent coach Cal would have won. Just need to wait a year or two more.

Great post. Super gutty performance indeed. Without Bradley, Brown, and even Hyder (and what happened to Kelly?), the Bears kept fighting all the way and damn near pulled it off.

Idk how optimistic I am about Fox and the future of this team; I just don't like what I perceive to be premature and unreasonable negativity about this team and this coaching staff. I'm less ready to proclaim myself a superior authority in other people's fields of expertise. So I'm open to the possibility that the improvement we saw last season, combined with the highly unusual nature of this season, makes me want to see what next season looks like before I conclude that this team of returning players (hopefully) has no chance of continued significant improvement next year (maybe an ncaa bubble type of team), and this staff has no chance at longer-term success.

As short as two games seems, the Bears' performance in the tournament provided a pretty impressive and exciting finish to the season. In fact, while it is certainly a small sample size, it is interesting to note that Fox is now two-for-two with his Cal teams over-achieving in the conference tournament.

Thorpe does give us these occasional tantalizing glimpses of what he could be, doesn't he? Pete Newell (not intentionally channeling SFCity here) used to run a Big Man camp - does anybody do that now?

Agreed. It was a gutty performance, but as throughout the season we did not look like a well coached team. Hard to see what the coach added. Even simple things like playing your best players. We came in last place. Last. We are paying him $1.5 million a year for what really any competent high school basketball coach could have done. However, next year we will be marginally better and there will be a crowd that will excuse his first three years as someone else's fault point to the marginal improvement and argue for an extension for recruiting purposes. The year after we will take a step back but the excuse will be youth. Poor recruiting will be excused because of academics, lack of a practice facility, the "mess Cuonzo left 7 years ago"....this is all so predictable. When we finally fire him he will get a $3 million buyout. He will be $10 million richer, we will have spent 5 years watching brutal basketball as the lowest scoring team in the conference and the next coach will inherit a less talented roster than he inherited.

The above is only accelerated if Bradley or Kelly, benched for the start of the last two games, do not come back.

My credentials as a moderate always ensure I will catch it from both ends of the spectrum, but I think the truth is somewhere in the middle here. Over the next twelve months, Fox needs to show significant improvement, both is number of wins and in recruiting. What with all the returnees (hopefully), we are set up to be somewhat better... but by how much?

I wouldn't my wager 401k on him still being our coach in 25 months, but who knows? In the meantime, I'm rooting for him to succeed. Surprise me, you sly Fox!

I don't believe any other pac 12 coach would have won more games with the same roster.
I like Fox as a coach. I also understand the players like and support him.
He and his staff simply have to recruit better. I'd love to see what they could do with an average pac 12 talent level.
I'm optimistic we'll get there.
Then again, I'm a glass half full kind of a guy. Life's just more enjoyable that way.

Imagine this team with Paris playing point and Marcus Lee at center. Not all league, just solid players.
We were a solid point and center away from being a MUCH better team.

I totally agree with why you are the "type of guy" you are and also what the needs of this year's team were.

Now Fox is two years in and responsible for the roster. Let's see what he can do...

I don't think you are wrong, but maybe you miss my point. The team might win more next year. Given they won 17% against Pac12 opponents, that is not much of a goal. But after two years if there is no coherence on offense, and there is no improvement as the season progresses, then that is who your coach is. I had these same arguments during the Braun era. Cal is never going to recruit great, it is just not in the cards. They need a Monty level coach to put together the odds and ends that they can get. In years when the recruiting is a little lucky, or the team is very experienced, there can be a great season. Other seasons will be less good, and I am fine with that.

Fox is not only not Monty level, he is below average in the Pac12. He needs to go, the sooner the better.

Of course. It is a strange, miraculous universe. All kinds of unforeseen things can happen. Maybe the 5 star son of an all time great Cal player who has been a Bear his whole life commits and elevates the program, bringing the rest of his McDonald's AA class with him. Maybe Fox changes his coaching style and personality. Maybe top recruits suddenly want to play in one of the slowest playing, least efficient and lowest scoring offenses in college basketball. Or maybe I'm just flat wrong in my assessment of his coaching and potential.

We all want Cal basketball to be successful at a high level. I just don't see it with Fox and think the sooner we are financially able to move on to a coach who has high potential the better. However, I have even less faith in Knowlton, especially as long as many alums continue to support Fox. Thus my prediction above. I would be more than happy to be wrong. The last two days, even just the PAC-12 tournament, just reminded me how much I love the postseason in college basketball and want to see Cal be a factor in it. If Fox gets us there I will be thrilled to be wrong, just like I would have been if Wyking got us there or if Holmoe got us to the Rose Bowl.
