Just noticed on Hyder's twitter feed, he is dressed in all red, and no longer lists anything about Cal.

It was looking at the 2021 transfer portal on 247 and Hyder was listed, but listed as transferring from Fresno State. I wasn't sure if this was from last year, or....?
I think you are confusing him with Tahj Eaddy. I wish Cal had gotten Eaddy.HoopDreams said:calumnus said:calfanz said:

I remember him transferring from Santa Clara, but maybe he came from Fresno State
I'm not sure if Fox can pull in a better player to replace him, though.oskidunker said:
No great loss if Hyder leaves.
1. Given that we have no confirmation he is even thinking about leaving, I would hold off negative assessments of current players until they are warranted.oskidunker said:

Just a question. Since this would be Hyder's 2nd time transferring, would he be able to transfer again without sitting out a year?calfanz said:

Agreed - As of now Jarred Hyder is staying. He was shooting in the gym yesterday with his foot boot on (has a stress fracture in his foot).OaktownBear said:1. Jarred is academically oriented and feels he can be productive for the team. Its all about being healthy and thus being able to train hard over the summer. The other returnees are mixed (Jarred and Kelly are bummed as they are very close to Matt) while others see this as a need for them to up their game, as more scoring will need to be spread around. The feeling is that they have a lot to prove as these past 2 seasons have been a wake up call for all of the returnees. They literally had not experienced losing anywhere close to this (all came from successful HS /AAU backgrounds). They feel Celestine will shine and develop, Brown will up his scoring, and Grant is going to be much stronger with summer training. However the big if is whether Kelly can improve his cardio and drop the necessary 10-12 lbs. a healthy Jarred and Lars can give more productive minutes/defend the interior. The incoming freshmen will bring depth and athleticism, but likely will be in supporting roles.Big C said:4thGenCal said:Agreed - As of now Jarred Hyder is staying. "As of now... ". That's a less ringing endorsement of his returning than you gave for the departing Matt Bradley a few weeks ago.
How are the other returnees feeling about things these days?
Joel Brown is going to take a forward step and be better this upcoming season. He is an excellent defender, decent ball handler - definitely needs to become more confident and take/make the open shot. He knows what he needs to do and he wants to be great. His motivation is there, I believe he will be improved and really help the team. The area of concern is our interior defense and consistent scoring ability from our bigs. The team needs to be more physical, stronger, and more athletic overall. This season is the make or break for this staff.NVBear78 said:

We need length/an effective big man or vast improvement from Lars and others.

I can live with JB's offensive game (or lack thereof), but he must improve his free-throw shooting to be a legit Div I pg. 50% is a serious liability.4thGenCal said:Joel Brown is going to take a forward step and be better this upcoming season. Brown's free-throw shooting pretty much shows his 3pt % (based on a small sample size and only taking wide-open shots) was a fluke. I really wouldn't hang my hat on that .387.calumnus said:4thGenCal said:Joel Brown is going to take a forward step and be better this upcoming season. Brown actually shot .387 from Three, second best on the team after Celestine's .414. That they were #6 and #7 on the team in Three Point Attempts either explains their high percentage or points to other issues that if rectified could result in improvement.
Brown's numbers look pretty good except one: his .500 FT%. That is just horrible for your PG, the guy you need to handle the ball at the end if you are going to win close games. Of course, last year his FT% was .400 so he is showing improvement.
As to numbers, I am much more concerned about Brown's assists. At 3 per game, they are barely adequate, but much of that is due to the fact that he barely plays half a game on average. Because Cal has very few good players, the point guard needs to be outstanding. He would need to get almost double his present number of assists, say 5-6 assists per game, playing 30-35 minutes. Another thing that keeps his assists low, is that his teammates do not move much without the ball to get open. That may be on Fox or on them, probably some on both.calumnus said:4thGenCal said:Joel Brown is going to take a forward step and be better this upcoming season. Grant doesn't need to get stronger, he needs to get quicker and learn to shoot off the dribble.. My fear is that Kuany is going to languish on the bench as Grant tries to elevate is game from average to average+. And I don't want to hear the argument that assists are not important, or that the pass that initiates a play is just as important, or some variation of that. Jason Kidd was our best point guard ever. Does anyone remember any passes of his that initiated a play? There were many, but they don't stick in our minds. What I remember was his assists. He averaged 9 assists per game at Cal, and 10 assists/per 40 minutes. The game hasn't changed that much that Joel Brown should not be looking to emulate Jason Kidd's numbers. Jason was barely average shooting a basketball, threes or FTs. It was his assists that mattered, and his defense, not his shooting. Cal is not going to be competitive unless they get a point who can get us 5-6 assists a game, minimum.
Brown's assist to turnover ratio is positive, 1.66, but frankly, that needs to be better. He makes a few too many turnovers.
As to the visual test, Brown needs to learn when and how to drive the lane. He way too often drives into double and triple teams, and gets tied up or loses the ball, without getting a shot off, or without making a pass, either for an assist, or a pass to get out of the trap. And he plays with one speed, which is very fast. He needs to develop the ability to play at a bit slower speeds and then speed up to blow by the defender at just the right moment. And he needs to see the floor better. Hopefully, his third year will be a breakout year for him.

Would like to see Grant be able to reliably execute a pick and roll or a pick and pop. Would have been nice to see that with Bradley but it would be good with Celestine too.
