Let's all take the high road and hope that UW now enjoys the same level of success that WJ brought to Cal.

We were actually pretty successful the two years with him as an assistant.

Wyking was a good Assistant and is a good guy. He wasn't prepared to hit the ground running that first year as HC. Best of luck to him at UW, but not against us.

bearister replied, "Yeah, I'm sure Theo would agree with all of that... especially the good guy part."

Okay, I may have spoken too soon. Frankly, I was influenced by a recent tweet of EricBear (Eric McDonough), in which he described Wyking as a really good dude.

I just read Shocky's latest, which goes 180 degrees counter to the assertion in my above post. Everybody go read what shocky wrote, while it is still there.
Shocky has been proven wrong on many assertions including direct things about coaching searches. No idea about Wyking, but there is zero reason to take anything Shocky says seriously - something I guess people have forgotten in his absence. Eric, on the other hand usually doesn't say things he can't vouch for and doesn't say things to make himself look important.

Shocky also posted that a program run by Mark Fox offered a recruit $200K without any evidence. No one confuses me for Mark Fox's biggest fan, but making those accusations on a fan board for the guy's current employer is bullshyte.
^^THIS^^

I haven't agreed with OTB on much lately but he is spot on here. Folks need to take anything the shockster says with a truckload of salt.

Oh absolutely. I mean, the "inside info" we hear about Cal Football and Basketball... it ALL has to be looked at with a critical eye. You gather in multiple sources, which have varying degrees of credibility, then try and piece together the truth.

I happen to like Shocky's posts because he brings the enthusiasm, which is sorely lacking around the program, but I don't necessarily believe every last thing he says. I will say that his version of what went down with Theo Robertson does tend to align with the more vague versions I have gotten from other sources. I tend to think most of Shocky's info is good. Grain of salt? Always.

The info is always good, even if it is just what Shocky thinks is true, he makes who he is and what his biases are pretty well known.

With all due respect sir, you've been quite the crankypants lately. So I sincerely ask the following question. Are you ok?

So then you accept his assertion that a program run by Mark Fox tried to pay a recruit $200K?
I really don't give a **** about all this who-shot-John. You are a poster whose views I've enjoyed reading over the years. But in thread after thread, lately, you've been downright disagreeable. So, I ask again, are you ok?
This is not my battle. I don't really care about Jones and I doubt he cares what any of us think any more. If you guys want to believe Shocks, it is not my concern. Okay by me.

If it makes you feel better to attack me personally, I can't stop you.
Shocky is here because this is the only board where people don't despise him. He's persona non grata with Cal admin (not that they are arbiters of anything, but everyone knows he's the loony idiot of the fanbase).

If you like shocky, you like Fake News.

Yeah, the same admin that's responsible for bungling 2 consecutive coaching hires...yeah, that admin. Somehow, they thought Wyking Jones (lmao) was a hireable head coaching candidate. And then when they get rid of him...they go "Let's get Mark Fox!" They have been nothing short of incompetent.

Yeah, the same admin that's responsible for bungling 2 consecutive coaching hires
The admin that bungled that hire is gone. The admin who replaced him (and probably didn't know shocky) talked to him, so he made him feel important and has only bungled 1 coaching hire. Get your facts straight.

Yeah, that's a point I've never made already.

Oh wait, I did. Dumbass.

Even an athletic department full of lifers who are half-assing their jobs building that pension know which alums are worth kissing ass to and which ones have delusions of grandeur about their importance. shocky is the second half of that equation.

Wow, dude. I don't quite remember you from all these years that I've been posting on here...I mean...Stanfraud Jonah doesn't ring a bell. First off, I wouldn't have recollection of anything your written on here previously, and that makes sense since nothing you've written seems to have provided any value at all. And to make matters worse, you're just posting retorts that a 12-year old would make. Did Shocky hurt your feelings at some point? Lol.

LOL. Some of the mods on here defended Wyking till the end, even when it was clear he was a jerk...and even took his side in the whole Theo episode. Shocky's info sounds way more accurate than any of the stuff the mods were letting out (mostly to protect their access to the program). Shocky was an actual booster to Cal Hoops for awhile. Yes, he's unfiltered most of the time, which you either like or not, but he provides value.
Tsubamoto - I'm confused about what in particular you are referencing? Truth be told, I spent many hours with Jim Knowlton urging him to make a change two years ago. What we did here is tell the complete truth as we understood it, not simply the one that people wanted to hear. That Wyking was over his head and struggling and that he was a good person with good intentions albeit like all of us flawed. The Theo situation is not as one-sided as we may want it to be as all of us are big fans of his. Remember that Wyking did not hire Theo, he was forced to have him on his staff by Mike Williams. Not sure how that situation could have been made any worse for those that have been in similar positions either as the hiring manager or the person being hired.

While we are always respectful of the coaches and administrators and are grateful for the access they give us, first and foremost we are Cal fans and Cal boosters. We donate all of the profit of this website to Cal athletics and I've personally been an active donor for over 20 years.

I will bet 7 figures that Mark Fox was never involved in any scheme to pay a player he coached nor was he aware of any effort by a booster or anyone else to do so. Mark Fox may be many things but he's as squeeky clean as it comes. To imply otherwise, does him a great disservice.

I believe this. However, I knew John Wooden and he was a saint, but that did not preclude UCLA boosters from doing what boosters do.

SEC boosters, definitely including Georgia, are infamous. I posted an article about a Georgia bagman that explains how they work. That is why many people viewed Fox's sanctimoniousness while coaching there as hypocritical.

Greg, that's fair and thanks for your explanation. The Theo situation...I'm sure there's some grey area there, but Wyking did no favors for himself with how that was handled. A leader of a program needs to actually be a leader and take accountability.

I think any reasonable fan with any amount of energy invested wanted Wyking gone...I mean, he presided over the 2 worst seasons in the modern history of the program.

But that leads to the question of "why Fox?" He may be a nice guy and all, but he had his shot at the HM level and failed. Why not a guy with more upside? I was livid and in these last 2 seasons....I just didn't care anymore. Now, we're stuck with this for likely 2 more seasons when anyone with a clue could see this wasn't going to turn out well. Maybe he surprises me but that's highly unlikely based on the current composition of the roster.

One could have said the same in regards to Sean Miller. The saying goes, "You don't know what you don't know." I think I heard Monty say that a few times. This is almost like saying you don't think a person you're friendly with or presents themselves to you in a certain way could ever be a racist or something else negative. Not saying the payment accusations are true, but I wouldn't be surprised either way. Sometimes these things happen without the knowledge of the head coach, as Greg pointed out, but unfortunately as the leader of the program being compensated millions, the ultimate accountability lies with the head coach.

He is not, he is in fact very sanctimonious on the subject.

Here is the article on SEC bagmen again, even though it is for football, the same rules apply for basketball:
https://www.bannersociety.com/2014/4/10/20703758/bag-man-paying-college-football-players

One key aspect is staying as far away from the coach as possible. It is done without their knowledge.
