I'm not going to criticize any high school kid who decides to go to a school other than Cal. I'm sure he has good reasons which of course apply to him, not to me.
If we fail to recruit any good players during this cycle then I will criticize our coaching staff. I think a large portion of their jobs is providing high school kids with good reasons to come to Cal.

I understand his aspirations to play pro basketball after college but wherever that happens it won't last forever, and I doubt having a degree from St Mary's would get him as far as a Cal degree would have.

After college, whether it's in the NBA or not, people are going to have to be able to deal with mediocre, even sub-par individuals and overcoming that obstacle.. Playing for our guy now might prove to be a great life's experience!
In general I think a Cal degree is more valuable although everyone 's own circumstance is different Even with my own Cal degree I never used it for my jobs, although people still tell me including my current employer that
"you're very bright- you have a Cal degree" so there still is that perception around.

I never got a job specifically because my degree was from Cal but under the circumstances I (late 1960s, physics) I got much more than a degree. I got an excellent education which has served me well and which I would have gotten from almost no other other school. That makes sense. Each college has a unique set of opportunities that a student can take advantage of. I was one class short of transferring to Cal from Feather River College ( which was an amazingly cool JC experience, too) and I am so glad that I ended up at Chico. I would have gotten lost at Cal socially and it would have probably ended up a miserable, lonely experience. At Chico, I knew people and figured out who I was in a pretty low pressure situation.
I wouldn't say Cal was a low pressure situation but I was never miserable or even unhappy. I'm not that social but I met plenty of people from living in a dorm. A few of those became lifelong friends.parentswerebears said:
