A stated earlier, FOX is on the hot seat and really needs to demonstrate dramatic change this season. This loss to UCSD is actually helpful, in that there is no excuse for Knowlton not to be working NOW to seek replacement candidates.

Unless we had a STRONG assistant (like Trent Johnson) ready to step in, I wouldn't advocate a mid-season interim move (unless the spirit of the players goes south - like it did with Jones). Also replacing Fox with a currently out of work coach - is probably not a great idea either.

I'm expecting Knowlton to have a list of five strong candidates by holiday time and be ready to move on plan A,B or C after the season ends in March.

Wuh? Huh? Bluh? I just had the weirdest dream . . . .

Yeah, not sure why we would fire a coach in mid-season, except in the case of a major transgression.
losing is a minor transgression?

LSU/U$C etc football and others did it this season, why not Cal?

I hope the job search does not interfere with his smoozing with major donors, which seems to be his main job

To be fair that _IS_ the job of ADs and so then the question is whether JK is actually closing.

I thought his main job was to provide guidance, etc to make sure that we have competitive teams, seems to me if we have winning teams the donations will take care of themselves .. but what do I know

I'm good with anyone from the Monty tree including Madsen or Travis. Heck even Krystkowiak.

My contact deep within Cal Athletics told me that, if Cal loses its next three against UNLV, San Diego and Southern Utah, Knowlton will waste no time in emailing his representative at the search firm to get the ball rolling!

Fox is not on the hot seat. He will be getting an extension very soon. We give out extensions like Oprah gives out cars.

Folks - Cal athletics is officially dead. After this football scandal, it is clear that football and basketball are not where the priorities are. After nearly 30 years of hoping for NCAA tourney bids and rose bowl appearances, Knowlton and Christ have rendered me hopless.

Losing is not a transgression. It is just a failure of coaching and/or players, with occasional input from referees, and depends more and more on how many players are injured or ill.

A transgression is slapping a player, or mistreating him in any way. Or paying players money under the table. Or getting Cal placed on probation. A transgression is also when one of your assistant coaches sexually molests a player or a reporter, etc. A coach is also responsible when one of his players commits a transgression, like hitting a player, playing dirty with intent to injure, sexually assaulting a female, stealing laptops, taking money from an agent to play for Cal, etc. Those are all transgressions.

What is your grudge against Legans? That he transferred to play his final year in Fresno? That behavior is pretty much normal nowadays.

I will stick with my concept of transgression, I think losing is the biggest transgression, esp when much of it is the coach's fault .. but you have your opinion and I would imagine that you are sticking with it

Interesting possibility. Normally, I'd absolutely want somebody with more successful college coaching experience (more than say, coaching for a few months on a lousy staff before losing his temper and flaming out)...

My question would be, does he know what he doesn't know and could he rely on mentors for that? What if Montgomery came back as "Special Advisor"?

Fantasy land, I know, but what if Sean Marks was getting tired of all the head cases in Brooklyn and wanted to try his hand at coaching?

Probably should stick a little closer to conventional wisdom here, but Fox is like "Mr. Conventional Wisdom" and where is that getting us?

He obviously told them no outside shots in the last 5 minutes. People were open for mid range shots and did not shoot. Most of the drives were batted away by the big guy. Hated it. Hated the stream and the homers.fucla

Between football and basketball, every search firm in the nation has Knowlton on speed dial right now.

Knowlton is more likely to give Fox a contract extension than to fire him. There is no light at the end of this tunnel.

Two road wins in 2+ years, ain't getting it done. The LV announcers said that Cal has not won a non-conf road game under Fox, i.e., o-fer.

We should have recruited transfers instead of freshmen like unlv

If we had 3 transfers that could play on the shepherd level , instead of shepherd and 2 freshman projects, we would have beaten unlv

We need the instant impact guys. We can not slow build this ship

Andrew Francis or Marty Wilson please. Even had we won it's moribund basketball. No offensive flow to speak of. Can't guard the three. Coaching is the #1 issue not talent (that's #2). Every loss to mediocre teams cements a more horrible record overall since Pac-12 wins will be hard to come by. Let's move on. Please.

Mark Madsen. Played on Montys final 4 team. Something that Shaq said about him always stuck: he said " Maddog (Madsen) is one of the purest guys he ever met in the NBA. He never did the NBA/pro in LA Hollywood party scene.

As a coach at S. Utah Madsen only has a 30-40 record but went 9-4 in the WAC last year winning a co championship. He took over a moribund program too. Off of the Monty coaching tree. 1o years in NBA, should be able to relate to the 18 year olds out there, and maybe Cal can start getting some of those 24 year olds playing for them like at BYU. He'll come cheap too.

Lol. I called on Madison as a Cal HC candidate 16 months ago, and now he's down to the final two? Still stand by what I said. Benefits include getting the older Mormon kids in. Monty will prob be more involved in the program etc.

Sure, Cal and Berkeley are a magnet for Mormon kids just like Utah Valley is. At least now they are allowed to drink coffee.

Can't people see what a bad fit Madsen would be? Hiring a Stanford guy will bring back the Cal fan base? Ugh.
