Okay. Since the Fox hire I have not been an avid defender of him or a proponent for his coaching abilities.
I know that with Cal basketball being in the sh t house right now that aren't many BI poster compared to
years past. It's obvious that not many took the time to watch the stream last night and/or comment on the
game.
But pile on me if you want, I felt the hot takes on Fox pertaining to last night's game were over the top.

Under the modern day "recruiting is coaching" theory, feel free to criticize Fox (I guess) although he is still coaching a team that is not fully comprised of his recruits.

But to blast him specifically over last night's game? Not sure if it was sarcasim, but people assumed that Fox didn't want his players shooting from outside in the final minutes? Watched the replay stream, at the end UNLV was extending their man to man. Driving to the hoop had really become our only alternative.

20 seconds to go.Grant was in position to rebound a foot under the hoop for an easy put back, and he fumbled the ball out of bounds. Was that Fox's fault?

Cal played a decent game defensively. I thought it was a solid improvement.

Look, I know everyone wants Cal to be like the Kidd/Murray or Gray/Gonzalez teams. But right now we're not due to a great deal of reasons, not just who the coach is.

The college basketball game I watched last night I've seen a million times in the last 50 years. Two evenly matched teams in a close game, where in the majority of times the home team ends up with the W. I mean if you are a Cal fan you've seen this same game at Haas/Harmon for years when in most cases Cal gets the W.

Fox is the coach this year. I know a lot of people aren't happy with it. But I don't understand making every game about him.

Okay guys, fire away.

the coach is always in the hot seat

I must admit that I don't watch the BB team a lot .. mostly cuz I am not a voyeur, more of a doer always have been

anyway, what I don't get is that Fox who is into his third season has not convinced Brown that dribbling is not superior to passing

he dribbles way to much.. part of that may be because other players are not in postion, but still

Brown has one assist in the first two games , for a PG this is just unacceptable.. I have to think that Fox gets some blame for this as Brown has been his to develop for three (in the 3rd now) years

The selection process was flawed from the beginning. This led to the hiring of a guy who had no business even being considered.

This put him behind the eight ball from the start. Since then, things has gone as expected. Cal is no better or no worse than they were the day he was hired with absolutely no expectations that will change.

In another year or so, he will be fired and Cal will repeat the process again, bringing in another empty suit who will do no better or no worse than the current guy. That guy will be fired and Cal will repeat the process…………..

Until the root problem is addressed, Cal will continue to flounder. The root problem is Knowlton……

Hey Oakbear, thanks for responding.

Yep I understand that the coach is always on the hot seat, especially when things suck like right now. I also think that part of a website like this is to say whatever is on our mind, and its very natural to criticize the coach. That is what the board is for. But the recent posts I've seen, are so automated. The team lost the game, blame the coach. Feel sorry for the players. Do you really think last night after the game in the locker room the players were thinking to themselves, "we should have won but the coach screwed this up".?. Really?

I appreciate your post. At least it pointed out something specific. Yes it does appear the Joel dribbles too much. And perhaps this is due to faulty coaching. OTOH Joel can be extremely quick to the hoop off the dribble. Last night he made a great pass to (I think it was Kelly and he wasn't ready for it). The problem with Joel dribbling and driving is when he gets fouled he only makes half of his foul shots.

"The problem with Joel dribbling and driving is when he gets fouled he only makes half of his foul shots."

forgot to mention this.. but it is also a problem as he will be the guy taking the ball up court if we are ahead (HMM any chance of this) and if fouled and misses, then opens the door for the other team

as coach, seems to me that Fox had a couple of years to get another PG and missed, not good

as Pogo was inclined to say "we have met the enemy and he is us"

the us being "KNOWLTON" LOL

For players who are not Fox recruits I count Anticevich, Kelly, Brown, and Thorpe. Anticevich and Kelly are arguably our best players and Brown seems to be our best option at PG. I imagine we'd be considerably worse with just the players Fox has recruited.

In fairness we could wait until Fox's first real recruits (Bowser and Celestine, I'm not counting the emergency international players) are seniors to see how well they turn out. But I'm probably not alone in not wanting to wait that long.

I agree. I don't think Fox is a terrible coach; I just don't think he's good enough to get us over the hump. He certainly wasn't my choice initially, but since we have him on contract, I'm willing to give him some time. However, by next March, he will already have had three seasons. I will stay positive until then (unless I'm venting), but another last-place, Cal-is-the-dregs season this year isn't acceptable.

The buck stops with the Head Coach, sure, but our juniors and seniors need to put on their big boy pants and win some games for us. They seem like great guys, but it's not a competition for Mr. Congeniality.

The best of the players in the classes Fox inherited left and are now playing for other teams. Grant was 8th in minutes played as a Sophomore (on a team that finished last in the PAC-12). . He is a nice role player but being disappointed he cannot carry a PAC-12 team on his back is not fair to him. He is the same player, his skills have not improved much at all. He and Kelly are just the best we have left. And that is 100% on Fox.

Brown is a plus defender and plays within his role. That's good.
Brown needs to at least hit FTs and finish on those drives.
Paris also couldn't shoot, but he was always a threat to drive and finish, and he was also a surprisingly good rebounder considering he was often the smallest player on the court.
Paris also wasn't afraid of the big moments.

I thought Brown had more upside than Paris due to his size and defense, but I don't see it in year 3. We will see.

But our backup PG, Hyder also doesn't seem to be the answer. A much better shooter, but not as strong a defender. Can drive and finish occasionally.

We should have recruited a PG in the last class, which could have helped, but so far we don't have a PG in this class. A good PG should see how wide open the position is. Hopefully we get a grad transfer PG that can step right in.

Hyder seemed to be more athletic in his Fresno State videos. I know he's still recovering from injury and getting his cardio back, but he doesn't seem physically strong (same issue with Bowser) and does not have the speed or athleticism to make up for that. Unless our kids start stepping up, right now the only guys that could start on another Pac-12 team would be Andre, Grant and maybe Shepherd, but they wouldn't be featured players. But a lot of this also has to do with Fox not putting his players in the best position to succeed.

I actually didn't watch the game or follow BI until this morning, so I am at least as qualified as Knowlton to pile on.

Under the modern day "recruiting is coaching" theory, feel free to criticize Fox (I guess) although he is still coaching a team that is not fully comprised of his recruits.

As stated elsewhere, The best players on the team are NOT his recruits - but kvetching about past recruiting after the season started just seems mean to the Cal players.

But to blast him specifically over last night's game? Not sure if it was sarcasim, but people assumed that Fox didn't want his players shooting from outside in the final minutes? Watched the replay stream, at the end UNLV was extending their man to man. Driving to the hoop had really become our only alternative.

Good Point. Part of coaching is getting all the players to execute the same plan. Sounds simple, but really is pretty hard.

20 seconds to go.Grant was in position to rebound a foot under the hoop for an easy put back, and he fumbled the ball out of bounds. Was that Fox's fault?

Have you missed the stories about practices and the hands of stone drills?

Cal played a decent game defensively. I thought it was a solid improvement.

They gave up 80 to UC San feakin Diego. Improvementwas the only mathematical possibility.

Look, I know everyone wants Cal to be like the Kidd/Murray or Gray/Gonzalez teams. But right now we're not due to a great deal of reasons, not just who the coach is.

Good point, but I think there is enough evidence that FOX will not be the coach to get us out of this mess.

The college basketball game I watched last night I've seen a million times in the last 50 years. Another good point. Losing by a few on the road is much worse than demonstrating incompetence at home and knowing there was no hope 3 minutes into the second half. That is why IMHO Fox is marginally better than Jones. However. there are some things that are marginally better than squash that I still don't want to eat.

Fox is the coach this year. I know a lot of people aren't happy with it. But I don't understand making every game about him.

Third good point in a row. But I also understand how lots of humans behave - so screaming at the elephant in the room makes sense as well.

Okay guys, fire away.

Just to summarize and then I'll let it go. Criticize Fox all you want, but on a specific game by game basis, it gets really tiresome to always hear "we lost this game because of Fox" which I honestly feel didn't apply to a game like Saturday's.

It isn't the Regents. It is a combination of Chancellors, the search committees for them and the failure of Cal to find a young Chancellor able to create a 20+ year tenure leading to structural change.

Young at UCLA is instructive. He had 30+ years to build the kind of institutional commitment to sports that yields competing for NCAA titles and hiring Chip Kelly as a HC (irrespective of Kelly's actual results - at the time it was a BALLSY move and something Cal could never have pulled off).

Really if you want to change Cal's sports trajectory THAT is where to try to put pressure if you have influence - that the Chancellor after Christ needs to be, at the oldest, in their early 50s. Better in their 40s.

But that just is so unlikely. The powers that be (tenured faculty) love Cal as it is. They LIKE care taker chancellors who can smooze donors, keep Oakland off the back of the faculty and let Cal be Cal. It is why we get weak chancellors who let these powers do their thing. Contrast with Builders like Young or Atkins at UCSD.

If he continues USF's success, he ticks several of the boxes Cal would (should) be looking for. Could be a potential HC candidate in a couple of years.

I see he has done well at USF. It's a nice, quiet and under the radar program that has a nice Gym they play in. He definitely has the program going in the right direction. I prefer Pasternak or Gates to be the next HC at Cal, as long as they can attain a coaching, support staff that expands the recruiting. We need a WC connect to recruit the AAU/HS/Prep programs the right way.
