  • Can't keep them straight. They have a big man transfer from Seattle U who had 18 points against Nevada. Blocks a lot of shots..again. Some reserves made all their threes and nothing else. They are going to be hard to beat. Here is the box score from the Nevada game. The game was in Reno. Big men travel. Bull**** walks.

According to Pomeroy

2020-21
UNLV #176
San Diego #195
UC San Diego #231

So, yes, this San Diego is supposed to be better than UC San Diego, but probably not as good as UNLV.

Great so we are going to lose

I don't understand how there can possibly be three San Diegos. And if we lose to this next one, we will be 0-3 (lost Bradley to the other one). San Freakin' Diego?!?

Has any team ever lost to UC Berkeley, Berkeley City College and Berklee School of Music? (Not recently, for sure, because that would mean they lost to us.)

UC San Diego (the comparative baby). It could have been called UC LaJolla but some lobbying.....

University of San Diego. Catholic school. Similar to USF or U of Santa Clara

San Diego State University. I believe the first CSU. Was originally San Diego Teachers College. Has a somewhat "interesting" relationship with the CSU system as it sees itself different than the Fullertons and Bakersfields of the world. Has LONG aspired to becoming a doctoral granting institution and generally CSU system (and UCs) have pushed back HARD on that. Hasn't stopped SDSU from wishing and wanting.

Wanting to jump on the non Cal basketball related tangent , , ,

A little over 10 years ago, I took Beached Jr. on a tour of San Diego colleges. He was graduating from Campolindo in Moraga. Had absolutely ZERO interest in St Marys' ("Dad - I don't want to go to a small catholic university with mediocre academics) and didn't think he'd get into Cal. Mainly - he just wanted to go to college outside of the Bay Area (as many do).

UC San Diego: Joined the well rehearsed group tour (which seems to be a training ground for Disney tour operators) in our comfy group of 20 or so seniors and their parents. See the beautiful campus and pass another tour group regularly.

San Diego State: Started similar to UCSD, but missing the La Jolla vibe. About 10 minutes into the tour, the much less competent tour guide (another student - similar to UCSD guide on the surface, but not as polished) actually LOST our tour group. Don't recall the building, but he attempted to enter through a door which was locked. Told the entire group to wait while he figured out what was going on. We waited about 15 minutes. He never returned and we all eventually disbanded and went home.

University of San Diego: AKA Recruiting GENIUSES. Our tour consisted of myself, Beached Jr and a very attractive and charming female freshman. That was it. She basically tried to lose me. Completely enthralled Beached Jr and would stop at the nice views and talk about how much fun the students had and where they went on dates, etc. Nothing about academics, facilities, costs, nada.

On the drive home, Beached Jr spewed about how he REALLY thought he should go to USD. Why, I asked - (recalling his comments about St Mary's). "Academics are over rated and I think I want to go to a small catholic college"

"Yeah Right"

Sounds about right. I would say, however, that Beached Jr. May have overlooked "talent" on the Aztec campus. Shocky would have been in heaven there, god bless him and his yoga posts.

La Jolla has a pretty distinct identity and that is what the founding faculty wanted. It got nixed by members of the San Diego state legislative delegation if memory serves.

Remember, it is Cal State Monterey Bay (and not Seaside) or Cal State Channel Islands (rather than Cal State Camarillo). Probably others in the system as well that I am forgetting. As you note, all the UCs are named for the city they are located in. And of course Hastings. ....and sorta like Cal - Cal Poly rathe than California Polytechical University at SLO.

To be fair, most (if not all) those Cal States are named after larger regional areas rather than tiny cities no one has ever heard of.

I apologize, I misread your post. I thought you were stating your opinion on what the school should've been called instead of what actually happened.

I did SDSU for a year (75/76) then transferred to Cal. Oh what FUN it was! Aztecs lost only one game and I took a Mission Bay water skiing class = 2 units! Once a week for 3 hours water skiing on Mission Bay! If I could turn the clock back and relive 1 year -- it would be that! Exactly what college is supposed to be - FUN!!! And the girls - Hummmmm Baby!!!!

Another data point, UC San Diego beat George Washington 75- 55. Last year Ken Pom had GW #227 (roughly the same as UCSD). It appears UCSD has improved.

Halftime 32-32. Again, as the clock winds down to end of half (or game), Cal puts the ball in Sheppard's hands and.... nope.

SD with three straight threes and Bears are down five 43-38.
And Bears keep going at SD's big guy, Brown, who has at least three official blocks.

And Kelly is hurt.

Kelly comes back - gets a block - and Foreman with a 3 and Cal leads 46-43
