Foreman had a ROUGH game. I would not start him. Bring him off the bench. If he is hot, he plays. If he is not, he comes out right away. I love the energy he brought to the past 2 games but tonight he was off and never got on. He is also a liability defensively.

Hyder should get very limited minutes or not play at all Not a P5 player. I would politely ask him to move on so we could use the scholarship. Same with Klonaras. I'd use one of these scholarships on a point guard.

Thiemann had a good game for him. That said, he shouldn't play more than 5-10 minutes a game. His hands haven't improved that much and he can't shoot free throws.

Alajiki needs to play more. Period. I would start him.

We go as Grant goes. He was intimidated tonight. He will struggle against more athletic teams.

Kelly also will struggle against more athletic/long teams. But he is the best we got so we have to roll with him.

I could see Shepherd being really effective as a #2 or #3 scorer on the team. Problem is that we are asking him to be a #1 scorer. He is not consistent or good enough to do that. If we still had Bradley, I could see Shepherd doing well. He is not a good defender.

Brown had a forgettable game. WAY too many turnovers. Really wish he would develop the ability to finish around the hoop because he is quick enough to get there. A nice floater and the ability to score from around 10 feet and he would be nearly unstoppable.

KK is basically the same player as Alajiki but Alajiki has more upside in my opinion and he plays better defense. KK is still very raw after 3 years in the program. I'm not seeing much more upside with him.

Celestine could be good once he is fully healthy.

My rotation would be:

Brown
Shepherd
Alajiki
Anticevich
Kelly

Hyder to spell Brown (until we get another point guard - 5 minutes or use Shepherd to play point when Brown needs a blow)
Celestine and Foreman to spell Alajiki and Shepherd
Thiemann to spell Grant and Kelly for 5-10 minutes/game
I'd play KK to spell Grant and Kelly and go with 1 big during that time.

Bottom line is that we need to recruit some scorers. We don't have many. So we have a chance if the game in the 60s but any higher and our chances of winning go down big time. We basically need 3-4 guys to score 10-ish points (plus contributions from others) to win as we don't have 1-2 guys who will regularly put up 15-20.

Next year is going to be rough offensively when Grant, Shepherd, Foreman and I assume Kelly leave. That is much our scoring walking out the door. Bowser and Roberson don't strike me as consistent scorers that can carry a team. The freshmen who signed don't strike me as scorers who can carry a team either. I really don't understand the strategy of recruiting a team of guys who can't shoot/score but that is what we have.

As a team, we don't defend the 3 well and we for some reason like running into screens (with no hedge) instead of going under or over. I believe that is because we aren't athletic enough to recover.

Also pretty obvoius we don't practice fast so when the other team forces us to play faster, we freak out and turn the ball over. I don't suggest playing fast as the only way we will win is to grind it out with teams and slow them down, but we have to learn to deal with pressure better than we do.

I too am very confused about roster construction and the type of player/team fox is trying to build.

We obviously have recruiting limitations. We just aren't going to be able to consistently pull the 4-5 recruits we used to in the 90's and 00's. So in my opinion, you can either go one of two ways. Recruit raw athletic guys, hope to develop them and then run and play pressure D like Florida. Or you recruit high IQ guys who can just shoot the lights out. And you would build the team like a mid major would.

But fox just has a whole hodge podge of dudes that clearly don't fit together. Thus the team has zero identity. It seems like fox is trying to recruit more raw prospects with upside, but once they develop, is he going to start running and gunning? Highly doubt it.

If the warriors have shown anything this year, it obviously helps to have talent. But roster construction is key. You need to have players who complement each other. We clearly don't have that. And what are we in? Year 3? How long is it supposed to take?

Spot on assessment - Staff hoped Klonaras would move on - since its extremely difficult/perception wise to release a player (even though technically the schollies are year to year). Hyder can help a lot more than shown, but his foot (stress fracture with screw inserted) is not 100%. However yes even when healthy team needs a better back up point. Shepard is not a quick enough ball handler and best at the off guard position. Foreman is a poor defender/very average ball handler and has to bring shooting or he is a negative. Team would be better with a healthy Celenstine and Roberson. Very limited shooters on the team, so limiting TO's, playing better overall defense is key. Tough to see opponents that are more athletic, skilled and shoot better than Cal.
Since 2014 all Pac12 scholarships are for a guaranteed four years. Not sure who on the "staff" is providing this information but "they" should know the rule.

https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/11775571/pac-12-passes-athlete-reforms-including-guaranteed-4-year-scholarships
My mistake in not clarifying my intent. The staff made it clear that Klonaras would unlikely see the floor much if at all. Thus the scholarship could be replaced "if" he transfered to improve his playing opportunities. The staff cannot pull the scholarship in the Pac12 (though it is one of the few I believe that have that restriction?). Klonaras is academically oriented and wants to get his Berkeley degree and continue to play on the team.

I just don't get the revisionist history with people who transferred out. You can dislike them for leaving Cal, but Sueing was our best player when he left and last season he was a starter and a major contributor on a top-10 team and overall #2 seed in the tournament. Matt Bradley was head and shoulders above everyone else on the team, and I think the thought that the team is somehow better off that Bradley or Sueing left is without any basis in reality.

Wow, a "stomach injury"? And since last year? As in something lacerated?

I wish him the best. Too bad he didn't stay at Cal. (yeah, Vanover and Bradley, too)
I had read a few days ago it was a severe hamstring injury and it was possible he may miss much of the season.

While I'm here let me say I appreciate the in depth analysis of our team by many posters. Many specific critiques on our players but I didn't quite agree with the Hyder evaluation that he is not a D1 player and should move on. He is currently getting limited minutes in our rotation. And the take on our guys was a little close to hot to post after last night's game, because in my opinion Florida is a damn good team, really good. Their outside shooting is as good as you're going to see, and honestly even though I often criticize the Bears' defense, I actually didn't think they played that poorly last night. I thought the Florida guys were REALLY talented on the offensive end. Just my take.

I think you nailed it. Those who are critical of Fox do not see a path forward. This year's team is between paths, with Kelly and Grant A. as highly skilled but less athletic players, while the latter classes are more athletic but less skilled. As calumnus has pointed out, the Fox way is to try to grind out wins with an athletic, defense-first team that plays slowly. But like 2/3 of the scoring walks out the door next year, and the current team is only built to score like 60 points. The only two pure guards on the roster are low-skilled non-scorers. And the new recruits, while probably fine, will not fix the perimeter problems. There might be some perimeter help next year through the portal, but that is only if someone leaves, and the transfers have been only okay to worse. Next year looks worse than this year, and this year does not look good.

Kuany still looks like deer in the headlights. Where is the guy that I heard was vastly improved? Hyder also does not look like a P5 player right now. Both can step up and prove me wrong, but that's what I see.

Well, it is what was expected. Was hoping we could compete for longer. Maybe we have a run in us?
Pretty tough to blame the game spread on Fox. Makale missing 5 wide open shots and Shepard limited due to sprained thumb is not on the coaching.Florida is vastly more athletic, skilled and a far better shooting team. Rafftery complimented Fox's earlier coaching stops. Agree on Kuany and Hyder (clearly not 100%) Celenstine also competing at 80-85% unfortunately. 2nd half hopefully is competitive.
Yeah, he said something to the effect that Fox turned around Nevada and Georgia, which never actually happened.

Is the headband ok?*

*His headband made every loss more painful for me. It always brought to mind the memory of the Jason Kapono led Bruin headbanded crew that the Bears spanked at Haas. The bigger our lead got, the dumber those headbands looked. They morphed into head wreaths of shame.

It's an example of that "Thou shalt not speak ill of another coach" creed that virtually all these coaches (and former coaches like Raftery) follow. One exception I can think of is the irascible Bobby Knight's comment about LSU and its coach, Dale Brown:
"I was worried about losing until I looked down the floor and saw Dale Brown. Then I knew we had a chance."

Hahaha - love that quote! In public yes to your statement, but in private most coaches, if they know whom they are conversing with, are open. The knock on this staff, is why "they don't own Prolific Prep" for recruiting (in our area)- most coaches/former coaches I have spoken too, respect Coach Fox as a solid coach, whose teams are usually prepared and fundamentally sound. A few comments have not been as generous regarding his staff. Staff is the key to recruiting (HC is usually more of the closer/final step etc). Hard to make a fair analysis of the staff, but impressions are underwhelming. Its disconcerting that Fox/staff are in year 3 and the team has limited shot makers and next year's class continues to improve the athleticism, but not needed skilled shooters.

No worries - I think we're in agreement. I had to look back at the thread - it was Bear8995 and KAB who asserted Hyder is not P5 caliber (which is about the top 20% of all of D1) - which might be accurate, but perhaps a bit critical considering he is recovering from injury and not at 100%.
Hyder? Are you confusing him with Klonaris? I don't recall anyone saying he is not D1 and should move on. Maybe not a P5 starter at this point, but seems like he can contribute, when healthy.
my apologies BB for being careless and reading your Hyder comment completely wrong. I promise to be more careful in the future.
When healthy - who knows at this point?
It was me. I stand by my statement. Perhaps it is because he is not 100%. But that is all I have to go on.

I've had 2 screws in my foot for more than 15 years and it's fine. Healing depends on where the screws are, fortunately my fracture was not in a bad spot. It should be noted I was no good at basketball before the fracture.
