Apologies if this was discussed here already last month.

In a court proceeding in October, Bird 'admitted to sufficient facts' that:
  • he assaulted and repeatedly choked his then-girlfriend in 2018
  • he prevented her from leaving his apartment
  • he later threatened her in an attempt to deter her from testifying

Pleading to sufficient facts, while not an admission of guilt, means the defendant acknowledges a likely conviction at trial.

Bird's legal penalties seem very light to me. He was ordered to stay in home confinement for 60 days and then will have a probationary period of two years. He may have no contact with the victim and will go through an abuse intervention program. According to the D.A., if Bird doesn't violate his probation or commit any new crimes, the case will then be dismissed without a conviction on his record.

Seems light to me too. Sad all around. He lost a career and his former girlfriend is still traumatized.

Oops regarding the thread title, which should read "Jabari Bird". Do I need to get the attention of a moderator to fix that?

Thanks for the update and agree that the penalty seems very light for the crime.

Wonder if the NBA is going to accept him back since he won't have a conviction on his record. If it was the NFL, I doubt he even would have missed a practice to date.

I guess what he did is somewhat worse than what Trevor Bauer did/is doing/will do again.
TB "was" a Top 5 - starter....

The Dodgers essentially told him to go to Hell. He may well be pitching again----for some MLB team....
all too soon.

I would highly doubt he gets back in the NBA. If he was a star, then maybe. As an end of the bench payers i dont see it happening.
Sad to see. If Jabari has been a model citizen and teammate and worked his ass off, he could have lasted 3-4 years in the NBA and made enough money to coast.

Seems REALLY light to me, too, especially in today's climate. Maybe the victim signed off on this?

I hope things end up working out in the lives of
a) the victim... and...
b) Jabari.

I seem to recall that Jabari Bird was believed to be having some sort of psychotic episode at the time of the attack. The article below indicates he may have been have side effects from medication he was on. I'm sure that explains a lot of the leniency.

My guess is he's been in a diversion program of some sort for the intervening 3 years and presumably had a good record of compliance to get this legal treatment. And if so, then that is both the right result and a pretty common resolution for people who have decent lawyers.

The crazy thing is Jabari was playing the best basketball of his life before the incident and seemed to have worked his way into a solid roster spot. His mother sat near our season tickets back when he played and she was wonderful and Jabari seemed like a great person while at Cal. Something clearly was going on and as others have said that must have played into the sentencing. I have not seen this confirmed anywhere but it would seem the victim very well may have signed off on light sentencing as well.
