I miss that guy! Man, he was fun to watch. Still remember him nailing three's from darn near half court vs. Louisville I believe in the NCAA tourney!

Well, under the rules I played by growing up, he travelled 3 times:

1. When he first received the pass, he shuffled his feet and travelled before he put the ball on the court for his first dribble. This happens all the time in games, especially when you pass the ball to a guy that is going to set up for a three. Most shooters shuffle their feet and travel to their set up spot instead of dribbling to it. Refs never call it;

2. His 2nd travel was when he made his fake move. He both palmed and carried the ball…but both are allowed now. A much easier way to fake a guy out than the pure cross over dribble; and

3. The 3rd travel was when he drove to the hoop. We were allowed one and a half steps once we picked up the dribble. He took 3 full steps before rising to the rim. Was that even a Euro? It doesn't matter. Guys pick up their dribble at the foul line and run it in these days. Never called.
How do you defend a guy who picks up and runs with the ball from the foul line? Every defender that tries to defend it gets called for a foul.

*I would have been a much better ball handler under the "modern" rules.

Almost never call it. In a Warriors game a few years ago, Steph was called for traveling after backpedaling to take a 3. He couldn't believe it; he held up his hands to the ref in a 1-3 sign as if to say, "You guys let #13 (Harden) do this all the time!"

Issue #2 reminded me of our last game against UOP. Their left handed point guard completely abused the palming allowance. It was driving me crazy, and twenty years ago I would have yelled something out at the refs, but I don't do that anymore.
This guy was "pushing the envelope." The refs don't want to call it, and its understandable that if a player is doing it and not be called on it they will continue to do so. But at times it can be such an unfair advantage to the ball handler.

I think we all would have been better ball handlers if we were allowed to play under today's rules.

Good description of the traveling. When I saw the subject of this thread, I thought it was going to be Hoop Dreams' advice for traveling during the covid scare. Boy, was I wrong.

I think you're right that he travelled at least twice, but regarding #3

The current rule is when you gather the ball it counts as Step 0, and then you have 2 steps. After watching this multiple times, under that rule it was not a travel.

But he takes two steps BEFORE the gather which is a walk.

Yeah, i was confused for a moment wondering whether the steps he took right when he caught the ball was the traveling in question. I wasn't aware of a "gather rule", so I just assumed that was an obvious 5-step travel, as though he simply forgot to make his last dribble (RH) on the move.
