Yogi Stewart's son. His mom went to Cal too. 4 star small forward, #25 player in the country.. Cal did not make his Top 8.

Coaches should have sent him this as a recruiting video

How can this compare with our California sunshine?

I'm happy to hear that Yogi has a kid who is a promising player. I'm disappointed to see he isn't considering Cal. And I'd be very disappointed if Fox wasn't in contact with them. (Unless there's more to the story.)

Also, do they know who will be the coach at Duke next year? I thought I'd heard Coach K is retiring, or is that just speculation?

Probably wishful thinking by ACC coaches.

That's how we got Jules Erving for two years: I used to love watching his dad operate at Harmon, all those years ago.

So, the error was in the recruiting sites, Stewart did get an offer from his parents' alma mater. He even tweeted a picture of himself in Cal gear. Cal just didn't make his top 8.

Yes, Coach K is retiring. His "farewell tour" is underway. lol.

Associate Head Coach, Jon Scheyer, will take over next season.

That's a pretty big error and completely changes the whole tenor of the original post (which falsely insinuated recruiting/coaching malpractice on Fox's part).

Meh, seems like Fox has about the same chance of landing a recruit of Stewart's caliber whether or not an offer is made.

Still seems pretty damming fox couldn't even crack his top 8

Agree, but that's a completely different problem. If the OP had taken that line of criticism, I'd have no beef with it.

The recruiting sites did not show the offer. As soon as I knew that was in error, I posted that it was an error and deleted that part from my original post.

However, which would be more damning in your mind:
1. Not knowing Stewart was the son of Cal alums and not offering a top 25 player from Florida?
2. Knowing, but not being able to crack the final 8 of the son of two Cal alums?

1, by far. There are any number of reasons (not all bad) for 2; but 1 is coaching/recruiting malpractice.

Don't misread my post. I'm not saying 2 is OK (depending on the reason). As I said above, I'd have no objection to criticisms based on 2.

I think both are damning, but I think even worse is the fact that interest in (and expectations of) our basketball team are so low that highlighting the super-talented kids of some of our most beloved Golden Bear hoops alums happens when they commit to other programs! Just feel like our athletic department is falling down on the job, both in outreach to our former players and in cultivating ties to the next generation.

Agreed. I hope the changes that Wilcox is asking for can be sort of a template for the Athletic Department as a whole. Seems like he is securing funds and staff for the kind of holistic promotion and outreach that could recognize and capitalize on opportunities like this.

I'm not saying the following should be one of the main criteria for hiring a HC at cal, but there's absolutely something to be said about hiring someone with ties to Cal.

It's just easier for that coach to understand how things work here, what makes this place tick, having connections to former coaches/players/alums, etc.

Cause, I'm sorry, but I can almost guarantee you that if Dennis gates were HC, yogi Stewart's son would have absolutely considered Cal.

3. Recruiting at the bottom of the conference each and every year. I actually don't care very much about 1 or 2. I think what Fox does should be called "repelling" rather than "recruiting".

Or "rappelling". Down to the bottom of the conference.

How much the same is Cal today as it was in 1979? Or are we just saying an Alum would just be more tolerant or patient with Cal today irrespective of when they attended? We aren't exactly a tolerant bunch of fans, no matter who is coaching.

Honestly, I don't know that as an undergrad I had any clue as to the inner workings of any department on campus. I can't fully appreciate how somebody who attended Cal would have all that much of a leg up managing Cal today just because they took a class on campus. The leadership is different, the community is different, and the times are different. Having attended Cal in the early 80s would prepare nobody for the modern Athletic Department or landscape that is organized around Title 9 and NIL rule. So what exactly does hiring an Cal guy/gal get us other than a familiar name? Are there really enough kids of alumni whose parents were DIV 1 athletes to make this a winning strategy?

OK, let's be optimistic about this. It's not hard to envision something akin to Jerome Jamal Boykin's path to Cal:

  • A very good (****), but not amazing high school player, Sean Stewart gets a little PT his first year at Duke (2023-2024) but realizes he'll never be a star there and will likely get recruited over. He also finds the private school atmosphere a little stifling.
  • Meanwhile, Cal's new HC for the 2023-2024 season (Gates? Golden?) has installed a more uptempo offense, brought in a couple of decent transfers and finished with a .500 conference record.
  • With extended family in Sacramento and the Bay Area, Stewart transfers to Cal, joining the rennaissance.in its basketball program.

Yeah, I like the sound of this.

Yeah, Jamal Boykin and maybe Marcus Lee is a better example. Monty was a turnoff/Kentucky was alluring, but when he got recruited over in Kentucky and Monty retired and Cuonzo was hired, he transferred back.

California/Bay Area guys like Marcus Lee and Najee Harris in football made a huge impression on people in Kentucky and Alabama because they were ideal Cal athletes: smart, educated, kind, generous, politically aware with broad interests and able to bridge people and cultures. Boykin (from LA) was similar at Duke.
