The performance does not warrant an extension with the same (or better) terms.

People complaining about the complaining need to understand this is what we feared. .

His stated gosl is just "top half" of the conference (CBI?) and thinks Fox just needs more time? It is only going to get worse. Fox will be the one recruiting his huge class when his first class depart.

By the end of the decade Knowlton could will have destroyed Cal sports. He is the worst AD we could have at this critical time in history. I would trade him for any other AD in the country sight unseen.

Dennis Gates will prob win a game in the Tourney in a couple weeks and parlay it into a P5 gig. And that ship will sail for us. Can't wait.

BTW one grad transfer, even the caliber of Shep, doesn't do a whole lot for us next year. Our lack of talent and abysmal recruiting is WAY deeper than that. If anything a good grad transfer will prevent the development of our younger guys. I'd rather get a halfway decent freshman guard but Fox literally hasn't added one in his 3 years here.

this is a depressing possibility:



Gauging public response via leak? How afraid of your own shadow do you have to be to not know how your own coach is progressing towards targets you should be setting?

This possibility makes me way sadder than the thought that Knowlton supports Fox. At least there Knowlton is showing he has some beliefs of his own and isn't just a weathervane looking to see which way the wind is blowing. Then again, the exact same thing happened with Wyking, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised.

Until Cal men's basketball makes money (through better donors or a better TV deal), we're going to make cost-cutting, risk-averse decisions about our program.

You nailed it - Knowlton's goal is merely having Cal be middle of the pack. Not necessarily even NCAA tourney worthy.

I'm becoming more certain that Berkeley administration just doesn't know/care about BOTH their academic and athletic standing. It's a travesty that we are the 2nd best and no longer flagship UC campus and now we are driving athletics into the ground via poor leadership.

The only reason I will continue going to cal football games is for that beer garden to drown my sorrows while having that spectacular view.

I used to go to EVERY home football game & I've now limited it to a select 2 each year, and if Fox's contract is extended, my midcourt chairbacks will be available beginning next year.

This is ridiculously sad news. There is NO WAY he should be extended after this year. I am sorry - it is neither deserved NOR critical for recruiting.

But hey - they have lost me as a fan -- I don't watch, don't subscribe to Pac12 network (we went Spectrum basic) and only coming ion BI to occasionally procrastinate.

As much as I dislike Fox, which is as much as anyone here, the current financial picture is nothing like the pre-pandemic picture. Giving him a fake extension is probably financially preferable to a buyout. I used to go to 3-4 games a season. Now I don't bother.

You give Knowlton too much credit. As much as I dislike Fox, I know who I would bet on in a battle of wits. I know who out-foxes whom. If Fox is extended it will likely be an extension of the current contract which will be declared a victory. At best Fox takes a pay cut and agrees to "only" except $1.5 million per year. Maybe even throw in more money for the current assistant coaches like we did after going 5-7 in football. There is no way a contract gets extended and the buyout with three years remaining is less than if it expired or was In the last year of the previous contract. I have yet to see that and I highly doubt Knowlton pulls off the first.

That is the goal, lower expectations. Lower the bar enough that you can trip over it and call it a success.

When Knowlton was hired, Air Force and VMI must have been the goal. Knowlton in turn said Fox's Georgia record was the goal. We have historically bad losing seasons in football, men's and women's basketball and Knowlton gets a 7 year extension. Wilcox has already gotten his 5 year extension after 5-7, do we doubt Fox is next?

To be fair, Wilcox would have been 6-6 without COVID-19 fiasco depleting us for the Arizona game. So far this season Fox is 12-17 with 3 games remaining against teams which will be favored.

My frustration with the Cal admin and Knowlton grew leaps and bounds with each sentence. Sheesh - feels hopeless.

Catching up on today's news and can't believe this could be true. I think very lowly of the administration but extending Fox after we've had the worst P6 program in the country during his tenure is just criminal. Isn't there some sort of breach of fiduciary responsibility when public university funds are used so recklessly?
