"I think Knowlton knows very little about basketball (He does attend several games every season)"

One, he should go to all home games.. he only attends several, what is that less than 5, that is not acceptable.. he should also go to some away games as well ..

maybe if he went to some games he might know more about it.

that said, all you really need to know is that if you don't have some 'star' type players you will not be able to compete at the P5 level, I hate the fact that good coaching is not enough, but reality is that you need top level recruits or your team will be mediocre.. so that means you have to have a coach that can recruit .. end of story

All true points - to clarify I should have said he goes to many games (more than half of the home games) and does go to a few away games. Its more that the majority in dept/people sorounding him are mainly not from experienced coaching/athletic backgrounds. I do think he has done well in retaining/hiring in other coaching positions. However totally believe that his limited basketball experience/knowledge, is a detriment.

4thGen, we have, I believe, eleven scholarship players scheduled to return next season. If you had to pick a number, how many do you expect will actually return to the team this fall (regardless of reasons to stay or leave)?
Are there any tea leaves to read when Klonaras has no info about him on the BI roster?

Meanwhile Travis has the Grizzly's in a down year at 18 wins.

He really would be the right hire. I am not sure he is going to go up to bat a third time just to get told no.

The Kicker (UCSB) and Homaphobe (UCI) are both over 500 in conference but not great years.

Meanwhile we are 10th.

"9". That would be my wild-azz guess as well, though I have no inside knowledge, nor do I know the reasons that the two players might depart (could be so many reasons... searching for more playing time... homesick... no likee the coachee... injury retirement, etc. this is not to say that a lot of the roster is dissatisfied with playing here; more like that's the way things play out these days)

likely min 1 and possibly 2 more openings, but just an uninformed guess at this point. Really won't know till end of May+-. Would improve the team if the right 2 players left. However that won't be flushed out till after the semester ends.

Outside of Klonaras (who it seems is happy to work towards his degree and doesn't seem to be inclined to leave), who do people think are going to give up a scholarship? Most of the guys we have will either see a path to more playing time (esp. the guys returning from injury like Bowers/Thorpe, along with the younger guys like Roberson), or are probably going to need to take a significant step down in competition level/acadamic level to make it worth their while from a basketball standpoint. Fox can try the "if you stay, you won't get any playing time" routine (which is one step up from the Wyking "I am kicking you off the team - oh no this blew up in my face" catastrophe), but is there anyone on the team who will take him up on that?

Thanks for the info 4thGen.

Just curious, is Jay John still around? I would think he would be a great advisor and resource for Knowlton.
Jay is around and was reassigned to cover other (and more sports) within the dept. And yes he would be a great advisor to Knowlton.
I am a big fan of his. The player development and offensive precision slipped in the last two years of the Monty regime when Jay was no longer an assistant. It could be a coincidence, but maybe not.

Part of being good at one's job is knowing what one is not good at and either hiring or finding advisers. Knowlton is not good at evaluating the basketball team or hiring for basketball, so he should form a committee to advise him. That is obvious. It also sounds like it has not happened.

One of the things I like about Fox is he uses most of his roster. IMHO that helps with development and morale.

Maybe Cal should have hired USF's AD, because USF's last two men's basketball coaches are at least ten times better than either of Cal's last two.

I'm not supporting Knowlton, but how is USF's football program doing?

Every year, they win less than Cal.

To be fair, they also lose less than Cal every year.

They don't have one.

The AD I think we should steal is Patrick Chun at WSU. Has a good eye for football and basketball coaches, has great B1G connections, and his family (young daughters) were targeted by local right wing Anti-mask politicians.

Thread from earlier this year.

Knowlton is a disaster.
