In news that makes you chuckle Travis Steele just got dismissed from Xavier with a career 71 and 50 record. **** - they canned him AFTER he _WON_ his first round NIT game. Cause 4 years without a dance invite isn't cutting it at a school that cares.

If you're doing a cost-benefit analysis, I'm not sure there's a reason to care at this point. From my understanding, most of the basketball revenue is from TV, and that's not dependent on winning or losing. Unless we win a whole lot more than we're winning now and/or there's a scheduling change that results in fewer games in the middle of the week, it's unlikely that ticket sales are going to improve significantly. I gave up my season tickets because I just can't get to most of the games from San Jose. If they sold a ticket package that was weekends only, I'd consider buying it, notwithstanding the fact that for most games, you can get tickets on Stubhub that are cheaper than face value.

The reality, IMHO is that the AD doesn't really care about basketball at this point, so most of the fans don't see a reason to care either.

Braun got fired after 17-point loss to Ohio State in the second round of the NIT, after a first round home win over New Mexico (crowd of 1900). He made the NIT and won a game. We had some standards back then.

So definitely do not extend Fox at $1.8 million per year.

Talk to Gates, Golden and DeCuire's agents about a 5 year $1 million per year, incentive laden contract. If there is interest, fire Fox and hire someone with more upside at less pay.

$1 million per year was what we paid Wyking Jones, who didn't have any HC experience, and was the lowest salary in the conference. Any of the coaches above (especially Gates, who seems to be getting mentioned), would take that as an insult. Doesn't matter what they currently make, there is sort of an informal salary structure for the conference.

We are by far the worst D1 program in the Bay Area:

St Mary's>USF>Stanford>Santa Clara >WannaBears

If you just reverse it, we are #1:

Bears < Santa Clara < Stanford < USF < St Mary's

We're #1!!! We're #1!

Maybe that's the problem, maybe Knowlton is looking at our results in an inverted fashion and thinks we are good.

FIFY

We are 5th of 6. Just like a horrible OSU team allows us to say we are not the very worst team in the PAC-12.

Of course, OSU went to the Elite 8 last year and we finished last, so I think they have us beat.

And here's his potential replacement:

From ESPN.com

"A potential replacement consistently mentioned by industry sources will be familiar to Xavier fans: former head coach Sean Miller, who went to four NCAA tournaments in five seasons -- including an Elite Eight run in 2008 -- during his time with the Musketeers. Miller was fired by Arizona last spring and faces potential NCAA punishment stemming from the 2017 FBI investigation into college basketball, but he's yet to be directly sanctioned and is currently available."

LOL. Do they care that much?

In Knowlton's brief time at Air Force their basketball team was at the bottom of the MWC. He saw no need to make a change. The budget was completely and generously subsidized by the US Congress and US taxpayers. No need for cost cutting. There was no need for fundraising. Recruing is largely non-existent, the school is for creating Air Force officers not football and basketball players. He was just a horrifically bad choice to be the Cal AD at this time and we are seeing that play out In the slow strangulation of our basketball program. We just have to hope Wilcox can do in year 6 what he has been unable to do in years 1-5. Everything depends on it.

December 11, 2021: California 72, Santa Clara 60. I personally witnessed us beating them like a drum.

You are what the score says you are. (I say that when we win.) Seriously, were we 100% healthy? The piss ant Broncos went down that night, just like I hope the teams in their piss ant conference do in March Madness.

(and, yes, if I were a USF or St. Mary's fan, I would be LOLing at me, the big-talking Cal fan)

You correctly fixed the absence of San Jose St.

However, the ranking is still incorrect, because Santa Clara > Stanford. While their head to head was in Santa Clara, the Broncos won 88-72, a much bigger margin than the home court would account for. Santa Clara made the NIT, Stanford didn't. Santa Clara finished 67 in the NET rankings to Stanford's 104. Sagarin was a little closer, Santa Clara at 81 and Stanford at 92. KenPom had Santa Clara at 71 to Stanford's 103. I don't know of any rankings putting Stanford ahead of Santa Clara.

The biggest blemish for Santa Clara was losing to Cal by 12, but that was when Vrankic was out (and Bediako was also out, another big man who would have given Cal trouble) -- even at Haas, Cal doesn't beat a healthy Santa Clara. Overall, the loss to Cal wasn't enough to put Santa Clara behind either Cal or Stanford.

Kind of disgraceful that the three Bay Area WCC teams were all ahead of the two Bay Area Pac-12 teams. Thank goodness for San Jose St.

Catholic colleges don't mess around. If the hoop coach ain't cutting it he is going to get an unexpected visit late at night.

This Mick is rooting for the Dons and the Gaels. F Gonzaga and their arrogant fans and that HOF p@ussie Timme who is going to shame himself in The Dance like he did last year and in the last game against the Gaels. The dude is weak sauce squared.

That looks like a parallel to what Xavier is doing. Cal fired Braun because Monty wanted the job and was waiting in the wings. Xavier fired Steele because, apparently, Sean Miller is ready and waiting.

If you want to use ROI as the excuse for why the administration killed basketball, then why the hell do we still have all these other non-revenue sports that hardly anyone cares about?

So definitely do not extend Fox at $1.8 million per year.

Talk to Gates, Golden and DeCuire's agents about a 5 year $1 million per year, incentive laden contract. If there is interest, fire Fox and hire someone with more upside at less pay.

I agree that Gates would never come to Cal for $1 million a year. He is getting serious interest from 3 SEC schools that paid their last coach $3 million a year or more. It would be sad to see a former Cal player and coached hired by another school while we are showing scant signs of progress. Fox inherited a program that won 3 conference games. In his third year, Fox won 5 conference games. While that is an increase, it offers little evidence for optimism that he is the guy to restore our program.

And the team that won those 3 conference games (their last three) had only one upperclassman, a junior, in the top 8 rotation. They would have easily won 5 games by their senior years just on their own development. Especially given the collapse of a couple other programs.

Winning 3 conference games next year will be a challenge. Fortunately there is OSU, but I still remember the OSU of last year, so who knows?

Yeah, especially if his team wins or just looks good today. Same with Golden, whose team just looks well-coached.

The Gates for $1 million opportunity was more the last cycle. That ship has sailed.

It is the opposite. Cal fans (like fans everywhere) think their team was the only team that dealt with COVID, or injuries, or a bad call. Look at football, our fans want to count the Arizona loss as a win but crow about the USC win. Our fans are constantly counting "close losses" as reason for optimism.

Curious why you showed WSU? Our former fellow cellar dweller has now beaten us the last 5 times we have played them.
