Now maybe he is still on the board next year when we WILL be firing Mark Fox but I think that really this is the move to make.

This year they were a LITTLE down but it is important to take a deeper dive and see that they had 5 games wacked by COVID (at least 4 of which they probably are favored). I am pretty sure that they would have gotten to 20 wins again without....giving him 5 years of 20+ victories.

I get that he kicked Jorge. And I REALLY want us to hire an African American coach. But objectively his record and connections suggest a higher probability of success than Dennis (whose record is worse):

1) Recruited the West Coast for Zona. Knows the territory Really well
2) Has backing of donors. The practice facility far more likely to get done.
3) Now knows what it is like to head coach at a UC. Has had to understand the kind of kid that can succeed. Yes. It is UC Isla Vista. But it isn't a HORRIBLE school or ASU. That experience translates. He worked for Braun. He can find his way around campus.
4) He is 45.

He isn't getting the UCLA or USC or Arizona jobs. He MIGHT, however, be an interesting candidate for ASU when bobby gets canned next year (cause that writing is SO on the wall).

PS. I wasn't there 3 years ago because there wasn't enough of a track record at UCB to gauge and he took over a program that had a decent amount of talent. 5 years into his record at UCSB it is clear he can coach.

With Ben Howland getting fired, Pasternack, may be one of the few coaches available when Cal finally decides to make a change. The competition for rising stars like Golden and Gates will be fierce now that four SEC jobs are open with all of them paying $2.65 million or more per year to the previous coach.

There will be many coaches available, though maybe few from our current list. Pasternak is on my list, but relatively low on it. The list above of his positives is good. There is just "something" about him and the kicker incident, his Arizona and New Orleans "experience" and allegations and denials all seem to paint a picture of a guy who is less than genuine. But probably the biggest issue is he does not appear to be a great coach. Golden appears to be really good. DeCuire is pretty good. However, if Fox were fired today and Pasternak named our coach I would be very happy. Just not as happy as I would be with some other candidates. At this point I just want some hope and with Fox I had none from the get go and it has only gotten worse.

I've had two personal experiences with Pasternak. Neither were positive. Very small white guy with a less than stellar personality. Pass..

multiple issues with the NCAA when he was at Arizona…

First I wanna clean coach… Is he that guy?

The program has already been on an extremely severe self-imposed probation for 6 years for no good reason. I think getting a clean coach is the least of our worries. How about a coach that doesn't repel good players.

Yeah, if he has been vetted from the Arizona stuff, he might be the guy to take us to the next level (bringing in players, raising funds, promoting the program, decent coach).

Oh wait, I forgot, he kicked Jorge...

Pasterkick's record at UCSB is as good as Travis's. I would be happy with either. I am not sold on Golden - it just feels like the WCC recruiting pipeline (and competitive level) is just radically different than Cal's and I am not sure that it translates (at all) to P5.

USF has one of the most efficient offenses and defenses in the country. I saw their game against Virginia last year, they just look like a very well coached team, even against top competition like Virginia, Gonzaga and St. Mary's. I think Golden is probably better than Kyle Smith, who I think very highly of.

FWIW, My brother was the PG at UCSD following Randy Bennett and is close with him and the guys he has had on his staff.

It is also ALOT easier to recruit SoCal players to UCSB than to Montana.

Interestingly the top two scorer from the Gauchos this year are foreign born kids (Mali and Belguim)
Their leading scorer Amadou Sow, I believe got some interest way back when from Cal.

all of this talk about potential replacement coaches is so frustrating while Fox is still the guy.
