Step 1: acquire the coliseum complex
Step 2: demolish parking lot and create a medical school
Step 3: arena becomes dedicated basketball/volleyball facility
Step 4: coliseum becomes baseball complex
Step 5: renovate clark kerr track for track & field
Step 6: clear out baseball field, track & field, & haas complex
Step 7: build on campus student housing
Step 8: profit & happiness

Regarding Step 6 - Wouldn't you want to keep some of the facilities (particularly Haas) for student use including intramurals? Do you really want students to have to go to Oakland daily for practice?

Yeah you might want a new student gym or update the old one. Berkeley to Coliseum is 25/30 minute BART ride or you can offer a specific shuttle. With medical center being open you will have lots of students heading to coliseum area so a combo of Bart & shuttle would be a good idea.

There are a "few" details in my plan that need to be ironed out. Haha
You have an intriguing proposal.

1. Is there serious talk about establishing a Med School? This would be great for school rankings and revenue.

2. Your plan would also allow more parking in Oakland with a shuttle between it and the main campus, which could preserve our limited open space.

3. I think Haas needs to be retained for its proximity to the campus. It's best to have games and the basketball practice facility there. Players (who are full time students) who practice for 2+ hours a day should not have to commute for an additional hour (round trip).

4. We need housing. I think we're the only UC campus (may Davis) that does not provide 4 years of housing. If Southern Branch can do it (which they do) we need to do the same. We could also have housing in the Oakland area.

Bancroft and Bowditch. Isn't the building still there?

I remember taking a final at Hearst, Fall '72. I had just bought the Dead's Europe '72 triple album at Leopold's Records on Durant and leaned it against the wall by where I was sitting before cracking open my blue book.

Hearst Gym. Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck, architects. It should be preserved, but I hear it's slated for demolition.
