Thanks for the reminder. Completely forgot the games resumed today. How are Vanover's locks? He should just bic his skull - he'd look psychopathic and would get so many open looks through sheer intimidation.

That would be very symbolic and defining for the program.

…Arkansas is aggressive to the point of a smidge dirty.

Does Charlie Moore have a transfer left up his sleeve? He is under 35 isn't he?

Williams has a good move. He looks set for the charge, but he is a few inches out of position and slides his foot to get over further. I only picked it up in slo mo. The refs appear to be on to it.

As I said in another thread, Charlie just keeps going east, so his next stop is pro ball in Europe.

Vanover has made only one three this season. He is one for 13 attempts, shooting .077. He is playing only 7 minutes. Either he is hurt, or they have much better options, or he is lost in slump. if it is any of these, I feel for the kid.

Who are we referring to when we say "the one that got away?"

Vanover or musselman?

Who thought it was a good idea not to hire that guy?

Lars is better. He is not hurt based on my research. Eric is just cutting his losses. I doubt he felt sorry for Cal when he left.

Arkansas is gagging…and Zags gagging back.

I am no Zag fan, but Arkansas got the better end of the officiating stick today. Tons of hip throws, trips, over the backs and no whistle.

Mark Few has to be one of the worst coaches in the NCAA. With all the talent he has, his teams have little court discipline, they rely too much on their natural abilities, play poor defense, more often try to force the fast break, and play more often out of control.

Gonzaga may have had the better talent, but the Razorbacks had the better coach.

with Ark playing Zags and their 7-1 center I thought Vanover might get some run, but DNP

maybe he's injured, but Ark has a tight 8 man rotation

Interesting that Zags may have the top front court in CBB with Timme and Holmgren and playing against Ark who played 1 player over 6-6 but won

Show me the article that says he is not playing because he is injured. This is what I found:

" Cal fans planning to take in Thursday's Sweet 16 game between top-seeded Gonzaga and Arkansas should not expect to see former Golden Bears center Connor Vanover on the Chase Center floor for the Razorbacks.

Vanover, who played his freshman season of 2018-19 at Cal, started seven games early this season for Arkansas. But he has not been part of the rotation since December and his most recent appearance was Jan. 18 against South Carolina, when he played two scoreless minutes.
The Razorbacks (27-8) seemingly have phased out Vanover in favor of Jaylin Williams, a 6-foot-10, 240-pound sophomore. Williams is averaging 10.5 points, a team-best 9.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots."

Holmgren actually has skills. He would embarrass Vanover one on one.

Arkansas played with exponentially more intensity. ATTACK! ATTACK! ATTACK! …and the refs did nothing to stand in their way that made them ratchet it back. Zags we're just too p@ussie to slug it out.
Zags play in a soft conference. Even the Gaels beat them.

I meant that he might be injured (I didn't know)

I read the article afterwards from the other thread and saw he is not injured

For the record, I refuse to let bearister bait me into participating in this thread.

Right now, I have to be wondering if we wouldn't be in a better situation if we had kept both Wyking Jones and Vanover. At the very least, our basketball coach's contract would be up now (no buyout!). Vanover got himself into a terrible situation, basketball-wise. (Jones gave him the green light.) Alas, maybe he is happier having returned to his home state.

Musselman wouldn't have been a good fit at Cal. The fact that he is a good basketball coach might be part of how he wouldn't fit, lol.

Certainly agree that Musselman would not have fit well in Berkeley. He can coach but his recent squads at both Nevada and Arkansas were built largely with transfers. How many of them do you think he could have gotten in at Cal? I don't think Cal's academic standards are necessarily a barrier to success, but it is not an easy entry for transfers, especially of the grad variety. Vanover never looked like a good fit for Musselman's physical, take no prisoners style of defense. IMO, Gonzaga's failure to hit many good open looks in the first half was their undoing. In the second half they stopped running and weren't getting those open looks and the game devolved into slower grinding pace that was exactly what the Hogs wanted to see. I suspect Houston's win over Arizona was very similar. Run and gun teams look pretty ordinary when they can't run and are firing blanks.

We are now on the same page. I love history and the importance of records. Had Wyking and Vanover stayed I am confident that Coach Jones, with Vanover's able assistance, could have crushed the prior school record they set together of 16 consecutive losses and set a new record of at least 20 consecutive lossses.
