Since the ivy league does not allow grad players several are looking for a new home.

Llewellyn sounds tailor-made for us (shifty 6-2 PG who can shoot, 1st team all-Ivy). Wright could probably help, too.

Llewelyn is the first player I identified when it was announced Klonaras had entered the portal.

Replace low caliber talent with more low caliber talent. This is the Cal way. No ivy league transfer has made a meaningful difference to our program. Let's stop this waste of time getting smart nice guys who don't get us wins.

Go after P5 talent.

Grant Mullins (Columbia) definitely helped us.

Llewellyn was a 4 star coming out of high school. If we can get him, we would be very lucky.

competition will be stiff. fox really hasn't shown the ability to land high demand recruits.

Uh huh. And what transfer with P5 talent is going to want to come here? Seriously. Why would they? Would you?

The only person who may even consider us is someone who actually values a cal degree (hence Ivy League transfers)

As long as we're stuck with Fox, this is the reality. Get used to it.

Agree. And also it's not "the Cal way", it's the Fox way. Cal has had good transfers in the past. Off the top of my head, Marcus Lee and Justin Cobbs.

Agree wholeheartedly with your comment. I guess my point is that we should then just focus on using the time to find diamond-in-the-rough high school recruits and hope to develop them. Hopefully they develop reasonably to the point where our next coach doesn't have the cupboards bare. Of course this isn't in Fox's best interests so sigh - back to Ivy league transfers. You are right.

One of the Princeton players, Jaelin Llewellyn, is a PG - he's the guy I'd go for although any of them look like they'd add value.

My point is we should be using our time and energy to find a diamond-in-the-rough coach. One grad transfer is not going to transform the program.

Fox's recruiting philosophy reminds me of the scouts in the movie moneyball. They only want to draft players who look the part or who pass the eye test, while brad Pitt (billy beane) tries to look at it more analytically.

We are very much like the A's. We have huge systemic disadvantages when compared to the rest of the league. For us to succeed, we need to find market inefficiencies.

However, fox is still trying to recruit kids who look the part. Who look like the stereotypical basketball player.
This is folly.

These are the four main things I look for in a recruit; shooting, skills (ball handling, passing, etc), basketball IQ and athleticism. We aren't going to get players who have all 3 or 4 of these traits since those are 4-5 star recruits. So we need to prioritize.

Fox is stuck in the 90's. He seems to be prioritizing athleticism. In his mind, it's the only way to compete in a power 5 conference.

But it's absolute folly trying to beat Arizona, ucla etc at their own game. How can that possibly work? You need to think differently.

Fox needs to embrace analytics. He needs to realize the game has changed. The three point line is the great equalizer. Use it. Find guys who can shoot. I don't care if they're not 6'8 and can't run and jump. Just find shooters. Spread the court. Drive and kick and drive some more. Worry about the rest later.

except fox is about as old school as they come. if we're waiting for something innovative from him, we'll be waiting a long time.

Which is why we should have hired Smith or Golden away from USF.

Fox as you point out, does the opposite of Moneyball, even with his own roster.

Apparently Roche was a big star at The Citadel. If he liked that school he might like Fox.

Give me billy dreher, Ryan drew, rfk and maybe be nice and throw in a Theo. And I'll take my chances.

Btw a player like rfk is what we should be looking for.

Wow did you actually spell his name right? I loved him. So methodical and solid. Like a Harper Kamp with a little less mobility.

I'm not gonna lie; I googled him. No way anybody but him and his family could remember that vowel combination.

For you younger Bears, Beeuwsaert was a 6-6 SF, a Parade AA who grew up in SoCal(?) and went to Notre Dame, then transferred to Cal for his last two seasons (mid-late '80s) during the Campanelli regime. His junior year he played well, highlighted by a good performance in Cal's home victory over UCLA (only 1st or 2nd victory after the "streak breaker" of '86). Solid all-around player. His senior year, I believe he had knee problems.

He published animated comic strip book about a kid growing up playing hoops. Had had this really good spin move which got him to turn the corner baseline.
