I said somewhat OT because I still remember the poster/"insider" on a "rival" site to this one who was insistent that Jay Wright was seriously considering leaving Villanova to take over at Cal when Braun was fired (if I remember the timing correctly).

Getting Wright in 2008 would have been a huge coup and seems unlikely. Villanova just came off a Sweet 16 (loss to eventual champion Kansas) and that year would go on to the Final Four (so he had a good team coming back). Taking over a 17-16 NIT team (funny that got Braun fired, it would be celebrated with an extension now), seems unlikely.

Oh, it was 100% unlikely. There was just one insider who was very adamant that it was in the works. I think there was some small part of me that wanted it to be possible, but it was laughable that the person kept the momentum of it going.

Villanova is replacing Wright with the Fordham head coach.

Fox to Fordham. Let's speak it into existence.

That's how I recall it as well. The other side of the story (recollection is fuzzy at this point), is that Braun was stale, but not necessarily going to be fired until Monty sort of fell into Sandy Barbours lap. My recollection was there was a convo with Monty about possibly coming out of retirement if a good gig was available in the Bay Area - so the firing of Braun moved ahead knowing that Monty would take over.

That was a while ago, so my stories may be mixed up - but I do strongly recall that with both Braun and Tedford, there was a strong sense in their last couple seasons that they had both lost their focus/mojo/energy/whatever and needed to be replaced.

Wright came from Hofstra. Like you said, they're replacing him with a coach from Fordham. No reason, why we shouldn't be doing the same thing. Get a young, hungry, up and comer coach from a Mid Major. It's not that difficult. Just no retreads.

I think the new coach was a longtime assistant under Jay Wright at Villanova before taking the head coaching job at Fordham. So he is well-known to the Villanova community.

Are there any experienced (especially in the recruiting area) Villanova assistants that want to be a head coach on the West coast?
stu

I'd rather have someone who has been a successful HC at a lower level. Assistant is a totally different job.

The assistant AZ hired from Gonzaga seems to be doing pretty well...

It's possible any individual assistant could work out. Even any particular retread. And any particular successful HC can flame out at their next job. The circumstances are always unique. But I think the odds are better with a winning head coach

I remember the rumor being Jay Wright's wife was Frank Somerville's sister and she wanted to move back to The Bay Area. I think that's completely false however because his wife's maiden name is Reilly. I may have totally botched the real reason/rumor. haha

Anyone else remember that??

There was another rumor at the time that Jamie Dixon (then head coach at Pitt) and/or Dixon's wife were from CA and that he was interested in the Cal job as well. I don't remember the reason that Wright was supposedly interested in Cal, but I do remember that Dixon had some family connection to CA (tho I believe it was SoCal and not the Bay Area).

Musselman, Kidd and Kareem have expressed interest or even lobbied for the Cal job at various times.

Class act who will be an asset on the tube. He or Bilas will likely replace Dicky V. as the face of ESPN's college BB coverage.
