So our most likely option is a Patriot League player who just finished 8th in the conference. He should feel right at home, given our talent level pretty adequately matches that of a Patriot League team.

The reason, according to Knowlton, that Fox is not pulling in any interest from the transfer portal (let alone high school recruits) is still COVID.

"We are uniquely impacted by this very terrible disease. With each variant, interest in our program wanes and that is why we need to extend the coach's contract. If not now, then when?"

"We are now in discussions to add a one-year BA.2 extension for all coaches. We do know what our coaches are up against. I mean for example Coach Fox was without means for a year before our search firm found him. What an amazing find. We are so far from the very bottom under the previous coach. We look forward to being in the top half of the Pac-12 once we begin ground breaking on our new practice facility, which may or may not be in the works."

The whiff is official. He visited UIC, St. Bona and here. Fox and Co. again fail to seal the deal. I actually preferred Luc to grad transfers. He could have been a decent role player for the next 3 years and immediately eligible.

Ouch. I liked him too. Role player? Might have been a star. Someone has to score. But he decided to go to a better basketball program. They beat Colorado on their way to the semifinals of the NIT. They also got a good transfer from St. Peters.

Never underestimate Fox/Knowlton and their excuses, whether they are valid or not.

-Fox is entering his 4th year with the program and has not brought in a point guard.

-We have lost recruits to St. Mary's, St. Bonaventure and Loyola Marymount this past year.

-As it stands now, our projected starting lineup averaged 25 ppg last year.

But Fox will blame the players playing poor defense when they give up more than 25ppg next year.

He should be extended, since how is he supposed to succeed without a point guard?

To be fair, there is only one spot, so it does not matter who he misses on, only who he gets.

One of the very few public statements to come out of FOX about strategy is to play a low scoring game. This is simply GENIUS in achieving his goals!!

That along with wearing his Covid mask under his nose is worth at least 3 more years on his contract!!!

hmm, perhaps he ought to try to pull Hagler out of retirement LOL oops, can't just hold the ball for 8 minutes any more

low scoring games.. makes little sense, more or less each team gets the same number of possessions .. so if one team has scorers and the other just defenders, guess who almost always will win

Cal's opponents must be rooting Knowlton on for keeping Fox, gives them a much better shot at winning

hard to follow Cal BB anymore, just no hope left

And the recruits! Top recruits know that the most exciting place to play is where you will slow the game down to a grinding halt, put all your athletic talent aside, catch your breath from playing defense, and wait for an open lay up to present itself. This is what all 3, 4 and 5 star talent is looking for ... Not to mention the transfers from the Patriot League!

Instead of Hagler - perhaps Cal can find a way to give Al Grigsby an 8th or 9th year.

DJ Thorpe scholarship is open (he keeps his aid due to medical retirement) and while Andre Kelly has been a longer shot to stay, its become close to 50/50 on him staying. Teammates are weighing on him and Coach Fox is trying to stir up a reasonable NIL deal. Interesting how roster's can swing some in fairly short time. Coach as it is required/expected, is out aggressively on the recruiting trail ie was in Indy over the weekend, to watch the Oakland Soldiers play. Still the many misses continues to be disappointing.

I think with all three leaving we have two scholarships to give, but with Kelly coming back we would have one?
Still, Kelly is better than anyone we could hope to get in the portal. The key is once again getting a high scoring combo guard.

interesting that there has been no 'official' word about DJ. I assume it's true coming from you, and if so that's got to be incredibly disappointing for DJ. He had work to do, but had potential with his strength/size. His defensive knowledge wasn't there yet, but that is coachable.

Good luck to him to finish his degree at Cal !

Really good young man - will get his degree and is in good academic standing currently. Not sure if his heart was really into the commitment and grind needed (even when healthy) that is required at this high level of D1/Pac12 competition. Likely with school/upcoming exams,team/dept procedures and whatever else demands ongoing, the announcement has been delayed, but its a back issue that is not fixable structurally, to compete at the intensity level required.

Why would Kelly stay even if he gets some money? More money probably in Europe plus no studying . They are going to have to come up with a-lot.

Agree, it's hard to imagine us coming up with enough to beat out overseas play but by staying

But I'd think the deciding factor would be, does another year at Cal get him closer to the NBA compared to his other options?

If he is going to play another year in college to get more attractive to the NBA, it would need to be at a program where he can play PF and away from the basket, especially demonstrating 3 pt shooting. With Grant struggling last year and Lars improving, we could have done that last year. However, with Grant now gone, maybe that is Fox's pitch?

I always wondered about how committed he was, and I don't mean that as a criticism. But I was always surprised at how raw DJ was. He has obvious athletic attributes, and is the son of an NBA player who could set him up with great training, so how could he come into college looking like such a novice? Maybe he was trying to make his dad proud but as you say, his heart wasn't in it. If so, I'm glad he's made a change in direction and that he plans to stick around and graduate - I'm sure his father will be proud of that.

Exactly - Since Fox needs to overcome the perception of "my stock is as high as it can be". Kelly wants to showcase/develop his outside shot to be part of his package. The pay structure of playing overseas can fairly easily be neutralized by donor's chipping in with a NIL arrangement. AK is really more driven by Gleague/nba team tryouts (which is not going to happen in the way he would hope). AK is being advised by different people with different thoughts - He will not make any decision until after finals and even then he has flexibility to decide which path he will take. I would like to see him back not just for Cal, but also for his development, as he has improved under this staff and leaving is a risky move that does not always work out. His skill set would improve as he is a focal part of the team, versus being just a part elsewhere.
