It would be paid for by the same folks who paid Sonny to move on.

This tweet suggests he will need a waiver to play. Curious how many years of eligibility he has left.

Since waiver rulings never seem to go in Cal's favor, my guess is that this is with an eye to 2023 (helps balance classes a bit and also provides a highly-ranked PG).

For all my railing against Fox, this is a reasonable start to his self-induced rebuild.

I disagree. Clearly overrated coming out of high school, he is neither a great athlete nor a scorer. He is a pure point guard on a team with no one to pass the ball to. He would make sense at UCLA, as a backup, but not at Cal.

But if your only goal is to make excuses, not to win, he is a good player to add.

Can we just look on the bright side just once or should we burn down Haas?

Sometimes there is no bright side. And I have been right about Cal's recruits.

Eventually Fox will have stolen enough money from the university and leave. There is a potential bright side at that point.

Very highly rated out of high school but this is now his third team, and he did very little at Kentucky, and absolutely nothing at Texas. I don't want to hate on Fox for the sake of hating on Fox, as I am glad he was able to get this guy, but part of me worries this just bolsters Knowlton's predisposition to handing Fox a nice extension based on the "upward trajectory" of incoming talent.

I think this is right. He is perfect. Better for Fox if he does not get a waiver. Bill Walton can talk about Cal having a "big-time" point guard for the following year, like he hyped up Okafor this year and the incoming recruiting class the previous year.

Sluggo repeats his Debbie Downer "the sky is falling negativity" His arrogance is mind numbing. Thinks he is a better talent evaluator than coaches Calipari, Beard, and Fox.

Give me a break this guy was selected to compete for a spot on the USA team.

It seems to me that Fox has made an impressive start at rebuilding a very flawed California basketball team roster. Looking forward to more announcement that will make California a force in the Pac-12.

A guy who started 20 of 25 games as a freshman for kentucky is CLEARLY not up to the standards of bare insider insiders and outsiders.

At Texas he didn't seem to get enough minutes to even get warmed up. I'm hoping increased playing time at Cal will make him look a lot better.

Calipari let him go. Beard sat him. Fox is a joke. I don't know if he is a bad evaluator or just can't recruit. It does not really matter, we suffer for it.

Cal will be in double digits next year. I am not sure why you have such low standards.

Many of us, myself included, wanted to see another Jordan Shepherd. Askew may be that and more and he'll have three years of eligibility remaining.

That said, he's not Steph Curry and he's only one player. I'm waiting to see who else we might sign before I get too carried away in either direction.

So I said the freshman class of 2021 coming in was bad. Fox said it was good. The mod here said it was good. The AD planted Bill Walton with a piece of paper saying it was good. Does data count?

Fox built the flawed roster. It is even more flawed with the addition of another non-scorer. There is no rebuilding, just a race to the bottom.

He was seventh in minutes per game, first guard off the bench, in a three guard lineup. The three were all seniors.

I got that wrong. What does stand out is how few shots he took, less than 2 FGA per game and less than 1 FTA per game while averaging 15 minutes. He did have some assists (2.7 per 30 min) and as many steals as turnovers (1.6 per 30 minutes). Very few rebounds (1.9 per 30 min).

FWIW some of the Texas basketball players have interesting majors:
* Physical Culture & Sports (3)
* Continuing study in personal branding (2)
* Human Dimensions of Organizations (2)

Jordan Shepherd had two seasons of double digit scoring averages before coming to Cal. Askew did not score in double digits even once last year. Sure, he did not play that much, but still, he is nothing like Jordan Shepherd. He is a pure point guard, and he has some point guard skills. I think he is fine enough player, but he is a bad fit, which is not his fault. Cal does not have a #1 or #2 scorer. Kelly could have been a #1 scorer, but he left.

He could be helpful in like two years, but Cal needs help right now.

I'm not going to disagree with you about next year. Even a player who had a Jordan Shepherd-like impact for us next year would be hard pressed to get us above 11th what with all the losses we have.

However, if you look at Shepherd's first two years at Oklahoma vs. Askew's, they are comparable in terms of impact. Shepherd then transferred down and sat out a year, so it was his 4th year post-HS where he had his first serious impact.

Is Askew going to make any real impact this year or change Fox's trajectory? No, definitely not. But if Knowlton were ever to come to the realization that Cal should be striving for something other than the basement of the Pac-12, a player like Askew at least raises the talent level of the program for the next coach.
HoopDreams

we don't know that KU cut him (unless you have a source), but playing that many minutes in his freshmen year at UK is impressive

Texas had experienced/strong guards.
Texas had 6 senior guards
Askew as a soph had the fourth most minutes at G
Askew has played in two P6 leagues, so it was against top competition
Askew was a 4 star, and is 6-3 (great size for a PG)

Sounds like he's a good player, with good academics and with a good upside

If someone wants to complain about Fox. That's fine. This recruit might not move the needle in the big picture.

But Askew looks like a good get based on info available.

Isn't the issue that other than Brown we have NO backup point guard. I mean we are going to lose 20 games - at least we won't get stripped 5 times in a row because we have to play someone with no handle.
stu

That's one issue and I'm happy we're addressing it. Scoring is another issue. Time to address that.

The way to win in the future is to build the best possible team now. How many years does Fox get to just write off? To a team of 11 non-scorers they have added number 12. But for an imaginary team that will never exist under Fox, he is a great piece. I would have been much happier with Kyrell Luc. Nevertheless, as mentioned below, he will be someone who can bring the ball up and initiate an offense. That is progress of a sort.

Askew was playing with a ton of scorers at UK and Texas....He WON'T be here...He will have more chances to score...I expect him to average around 10pts his first season here and then to improve on that...I think he knows he will get more opportunities to score here and that is why he came...Not going to be the savior but one of the best recruits Fox has landed (he'll need a lot more like Askew to save his job)...We still won't be competitive with the top half of the conference..

Four more P5 type starters, and a couple of back ups, and we're rolling.
