Saw this on Twitter - apologies if posted here earlier.

Sad to see him go along with any hope for improvement in our won/loss column this next season.

This is who we are.

The first step in recovery is admitting that you have a problem.

We have been admitting it since Jones' second year. Knowlton hasn't. He's the one who needs to admit it. Until he does, there will be no recovery.

I figure it was either the girls, the parties, the weather, or the surfing that was the attraction. Maybe all of the above.

Here ya go; forward to 1:05 and you can hear from Andre yourself.
Among the reasons listed in this video and in the article below: relationship with Coach Pasternack who recruited him out of HS, need--SB has to replace their all conference PF Amadou Sow who averaged 15.6 ppg and 8.4 rpg, a chance to compete for a conference championship (UCSB will be the likely favorite to win the Big West now) and, yes location and all that it entails.

So happy for Andre - gets to enjoy winning and playing for a coach that he feels a bond with. Good luck in SB.

Happy for Andre. Even from that article ("One of the two top public universities"?) Pasternak just rubs me the wrong way. Sure, I'd have taken/would take him over Fox, but….

You got rubbed the wrong way because he called Cal one of the top two public universities in the country?

Just him over the years, including his time at Cal, his time at Arizona and his time at New Orleans, even going to Indiana for college so he could be Bobby Knight's student manager. the FBI investigation, "the Kick" his non-apology after. Just listening to him in interviews. Nothing major, he's just a bit of a weenie and "one of the two best public universities" fits his MO. Maybe it is his voice and his "lawyer speak." He gets angry and loses it but then acts like he's always composed and rational in his statements. He may be dirty, but acts completely innocent.

Again, I'd take him over Mark Fox. He is smart, a good recruiter, has good rapport with his players, is not overly sanctimonious, he incorporates sports psychology, he takes social Justice issues seriously, gives his players credit for their success and is actually pretty good with the Xs and Os. There is just something that "rubs me the wrong way" about him.

Fair enough, you're not the first to feel that way. I still don't get the comment about Cal being a top school annoying you- he mentioned that in context of Andre getting great grades at a place with challenging academics- but the other stuff I do. I lived in Berkeley for a few years and took classes myself at Cal after my time at UCSB to finalize my degree. The Bears were good then (Lamond Murray, Tony Gonzales, etc era) and I caught a couple games. So while I am thrilled we're getting a player of Kelly's caliber, I am not necessarily happy it is coming at Cal's expense.

I understand the Cal program is really down right now and this doesn't help but in the cases of a player graduating, entering the portal is not necessarily a knock on the program. I think many players, even if they were happy at the undergraduate program, may be looking for something different. As much as I enjoyed UCSB, I definitely wanted something different after my 4 years there.

Good luck.

First-last season-Cal loses its star, Matt Bradley, to San Diego State. Now-this year-the Bears lose their best player, Andre Kelly, to UCSB. I am a UCSB alum (1971) but I am a diehard Cal fan, born 'n raised in Silicon Valley. This has got to be the lowest point during my lifetime for the men's basketball program. Sad.

Definitely.

Not just losing them but losing them to other California schools in mid-major conferences.

We lost to UCSD last year. They are definitely not even a mid-major.

With Kelly gone, I'm now worried about what happens when Lars gets in foul trouble. I just hope DJ is not still sitting on the bench in street clothes.

You will get your wish since DJ took a medical retirement. It is why Fox has one more scholarship to give.

Not what I was wishing for. I wanted him on the floor, and ready to go, obviously. Sorry to hear about this. My best wishes to him for a healthy future, and my thanks to him for the minutes he was able to play for the Cal team.

Yeah, we know, just the way you phrased it….
Yes, thanks to Thorpe for battling injuries and contributing as he could. He clearly made the right decision coming to Cal. At least he will have a Cal degree. And taking the medical retirement removes the uncertainty and risk of the scenario you mentioned, frees up a needed scholarship and helps balance out the classes.

But you do bring up a good issue. Besides Lars, our "bigs" are:
Kuany 6'9" 194
Okafer 6'9" 230
Anywanu 6'7" 220
Alajiki 6'7" 225

Fox has one more scholarship to give, but my guess is he gives it to a transfer scoring shooting guard.

I think we can expect to see a lot of Okafer in the middle and Alajiki and Anywanu behind Kuany at PF.

Agree on all counts. It will be interesting to see if Okafor has enough all-around basketball skills at this point to give us 10-12 decent minutes per game. Anyanwu is a little undersized at PF, but I was impressed with the way he battled in limited minutes last season. He has a nose for the action and isn't afraid to mix it up.

Seems like our biggest need right now is somebody who can hit from beyond the arc.

I can imagine us going a little smaller with Brown, Askew, Celestine, Alajiki, and a center (Thiemann or Kuany or Okafor). I think our offense will need at least 4 guys with some semblance of a perimeter game.

I can imagine that, but hope we find someone who can score at the 2 spot. Until we know who the last addition is I'd go with: Askew, Celestine, Alajiki, Kuany, Lars to start. With Brown, Okafer, and the best of Newell, Anywanu, Bowser, Roberson, Hyder off the bench.
