transfer from Texas by way of Kentucky and prep power Mater Dei - 5 Star prep
Great get. Surely moves us out of the bottom 5 P5 programs. We have a solid back-court now. Can we get one more 5star to give me hope of a nit bid?

Finally got a highly rated PG! What were his stats at Kentucky & Texas?
Initial thoughts:
THE GOOD:
-Former Top 40 Recruit, went to Kentucky
-Started at PG as a freshman, averaged 6.5 points, 3 assists.
-Looks like a capable shooter and read he's a good defender.
-Good blueblood pedigree: Kentucky, Texas, Mater Dei. All big time programs.
-NorCal native; unclear when he moved to SoCal.
THE BAD:
-The Mater Dei Transfer Effect: this will be 3rd program in 3 years.
-At this time, ineligible for next year but could get a waiver since he's "coming home"
-Not the impact player we were hoping for/need.
-Not particularly athletic or quick but appears to play smooth and under control; gets to his spots.

Gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised we signed a guard with both potential and significant remaining eligibility. I hope being closer to home will be good for him.

There is more than one way of looking at Askew. But he does not fit on a team with no scoring, and he takes one of the two remaining scholarships. With Kelly leaving and only one scholarship open he seals Cal finishing in double digits next year.BC Calfan said:

Yeah, this is a little strange. Fox has got to know that next year is make or break. (Although who knows his closed door discussions with Knowlton). So you think he'd want to add players that are immediately eligible in order to save his job next year. So either A) he's confident Askew will get a waiver or B) he's comfortable recruiting long-term because he knows he's not going anywhere. I really hope it's A.Dgoldnbaer said:

But in your heart you know it is B. Fox having to save his job is a narrative that some here have created that I don't believe. I hate to sound cynical, but if he can't play for us this next season, then there's the narrative that "sure we finished at or near the bottom again, but this is a long rebuild and next year, we have Devin Askew coming in!"
Hey, great that he's a Pac 12-level talent. That's something. Devin, I hope you really flourish at Cal!

Good point. Passes (although we aren't likely to see the alley-oops here) and a variety of shots from different spots. Not unlike Shepherd but a 3-year player.oskidunker said:

Shephard averaged more than 4 ppg and 2 apg.
In 2 seasons at Oklahoma Shepherd averaged 2.3 and 4.3 points, 1.2 and 1.5 assists.

Great play on words there lol. Fair point but remember we are Cal and the NCAA will find a way for us not to be able to do this while anyone who transfers out of cal always gets the okay a la Charlie "what could have been" Moore.

The waiver to get that 3rd year isn't a guarantee. He has to sit because he used his free transfer.
Fair enough. It's just that all those passes and made shots in the video were likely all there were. I bet Joel Brown could have an even more impressive highlight real.stu said:

who here thought Shepherd would have Shepherd-like impact when CAL signed him? anyone? I'm interested to see who develops and breaks out next season. You are saying that if does not get the waiver he does not get a third year? I thought it just meant that he would have to sit a year. The waiver to get that 3rd year isn't a guarantee. He has to sit because he used his free transfer.
Most people thought Shepherd would start, and he had previous years of 12 and 14 points scoring averages. And on video he had some offensive skills. So people thought he would be a Bradley replacement, but a downgrade, and that is what he was. Shepherd was maybe better than advertised, but he was inefficient shooting 39% overall and 29% from 3. Askew will come in with 2 years less experience than Shepherd had so I'm not expecting miracles. However I'm happy we got a guy who fills a position of need and has a high ceiling. IMHO Fox coached Paris Austin up to a pretty high level. They're different players but that could also happen with Askew.Quote:
