BERKELEY – California men’s basketball head coach Mark Fox announced Wednesday that the Golden Bears have signed transfer DeJuan Clayton, who will join the program for the 2022-23 season.

Clayton will enroll into Cal’s graduate certificate program and utilize his one remaining year of athletic eligibility. A 6-2, 185-pound veteran guard, Clayton previously played at Hartford (2021-22) and Coppin State (2016-21) and will enter his seventh collegiate season at Cal.

“We’re excited to add the experience and scoring that DeJuan will bring to our basketball program,” Fox said. “He’s a terrific young man who is excited to be healthy and compete in the Pac-12 Conference.”

Clayton was a four-time All-MEAC honoree during a decorated career at Coppin State, where he became one of two players in school history with at least 1,500 points and 400 assists. He started 107 of his 116 games played at Coppin State and left as the Eagles’ fifth-ranked all-time scorer (1,518 points) and was third in assists (418). He transferred to Hartford as a graduate transfer for the 2021-22 season, but was sidelined due to injury after just two games played.

The Bowie, Maryland, native has averaged 13.0 points and 3.6 assists per game and owns a 1.43 assist-to-turnover ratio in his career.

Clayton joins an incoming Cal class that includes point guard Devin Askew as well as standout prep forwards ND Okafor (Dundalk, Ireland) and Grant Newell (Chicago, Ill.).

Clayton earned his undergraduate degree in social science from Coppin State. He was born in Washington, D.C., and is the son of Renita Springs and Derrick Clayton.

He was at Coppin for 5 years and left as a grad transfer. I looked it up and they do have Masters and Certificate programs, but maybe he had already picked one up and was looking for a change of scene?

The lure of perhaps getting to the Final Four was probably too much to pass up.

In any event, welcome to Cal, Dejuan!

Stop being a wise azz. Sweet 16 is probably the most we can expect.

LOL, I'm hoping for the Top Ten.

(of our conference)

In any event, I'll be cheering for the team and for Dejuan Clayton... and I'm hoping he kills it for us!

Top 10 in the conference? The fight will be to not finish last. Clayton will help.

He completed his undergrad degree then grad transfered to Hartford where he only played in two games due to injury, thereby preserving his last year of eligibility.

would he be the oldest player in NCAA basketball next year?

Right up there, certainly, Jordan Shepherd, IIRC, turned 25 during last season, which was surprising, because he had sort of a baby face. Whereas Clayton "looks his age". (I don't mean that pejoratively; 25's a great age!)

For the 2021-22 season:

Depending on Clayton's birthday he could be the oldest for the 2022-23 season.
