The Court was 97 feet instead of 94 feet from 1933 to 1985 - three feet longer than regulation. Newell knew but didn't tell.
(The passing of Bill Russell led to me to read back up on the Joe Hagler stall game and this fact was in one of the article)

How did that benefit Newell?

I took my History 17D Final with Leon Litwack on the floor at Harmon.
Had an A - going into the final and bombed it.

I played hoop at Harmon in freshman PE hoop class; intramural hoop there; took a few finals there; and saw Tower of Power perform there Fall '72.

My best memory of Harmon was I believe in 1989 UCLA came to town with Trevor Wilson and Don MacLean.

We stood in line to get in way early and they let us in like an hour before the game. The entire student section which was basically sideline to the ceiling on one side -- was filled. This was pre-warmup and Trevor Wilson then came out by himself to do some shooting. The entire student section started serenading him "Trevor Trevor Trevor." I am sure Trevor was shook lol. I think Donny Mac terrorized us though with his baseline jumpers and we lost. But that was the beauty of Harmon. Anything could happen.

I have unending memories of Harmon. From watching Russ Critchfield there when I was merely 8 years old, to taking a Final there in '77, etc... My Favs of course were watching Jason Kidd there! The Midnight Madness his two years here were unbelievable! Standing room only season opening practice!! Was especially nice to feel like one of the big boys in college basketball at that time!

My most vivid memory of Harmon had little to do with basketball. During dinner before the game, somebody in my co-op (Stebbins Hall) decided that our table had to beat the milk-drinking record allegedly held by a dinner table of people from Cloyne Court up the street. I reluctantly went along with it and we proceeded - I think some guys drank more that a half gallon. I probably put away no more than a quart. We didn't realize the cause/effect of milk consumption and flatulence but it really kicked in while we were at the game. Had the EPA been monitoring air quality in the gym, it would have triggered a "Spare the Air" day if such things had existed back in the mid-1970s.

Lots of great memories that may have been lost

1. When it was packed - waiting at the door in a long line to be let in exactly 1 hour before tip off. Everyone had their best route for the scramble to the seats on the west side. Etiquette is that you could only save two seats per body (you and a friend).

2. It would get pretty hot and humid. The only AC seemed to be the windows above the top row of seats which worked on a rusty crank system, apparently.

3. Bill Glass announcing

4. Straw Hat band leading the charge of fan energy and conducting a true TUNA chant..

5. Fun cheers handled by the organic, pre-rally com mike men (and women) - not the poor excuse of the last few decades,

6. Cheap dogs that weren't toxic

7. Eddie Javius cutting down the nets

8. Oski being more rambunctious that these days (and occasionally being restrained and removed)

9. The winner of the growls contest was always the best and loudest - not the smallest and cutest

10. Frisbee dogs

I remember in 88-89 there was a guy that lead the cheers. He sat in the front row. Not sure if he was official Rally Comm or not but he just wore a Cal shirt and jeans. He had total command of the student section, and would just lead cheers during breaks. He would also take a small kid on one of the breaks and basically use him as a spotter to have the student section spell out C-A-L over the Cal script on the court. Such fun times. Bring back the good times to Haas!
