The year was 1955. I was playing guard for Marin JC. (commuting from SF). WE played the Cal Blues (JV"S) at Harmon. Cal won. Still remembered after all these years. Turned 85 today!!!Can't believe so many of my friends, teammates and competitors are now playing on hardwoods up in the sky somewhere. God bless them all..Today I will order a drink at my favorite restaurant and toast to them all. SF City Bear is 81, I think, and, he must be feeling pretty nostalgic these days too. We went and played for the same high school in the City.....Lowell...I played against his cousin in 1953. If I had a dime for every basketball memory, I'd have more money than George Soros...

I am almost 80. A few months to go yet. There are days when I feel it, or feel older, and days when a young lady might flirt with me, and make me feel much younger. I got a call from cousin Jim today. He's doing well. He played on the Cal Frosh baseball team, and he is the one who introduced me to the Bear Insider, and all the great Cal friends we could make here.
You remember our coach at Lowell, Ben Neff. He went to Cal, and played on Cal's 145s, where he was the team's designated free throw shooter. When I was at Lowell, my Dad and I used to go to Cal basketball games at Harmon, and we usually would stop and say hello to Coach Neff in his usual seat in the southeast corner of Harmon, about 12 rows above the floor. The best place to see the plays develop. He was my Dad's coach as well.

Happy Birthday! My dad turned 88 on the 3rd. He was a senior at Stanford in '56. He played on the playgrounds in the outer Richmond until moving to Compton for junior high. He is in the midst of writing yet another book, this one more a memoir filled with the basketball stories that have been his favorite topic as long as I've known him.
calumnus....You are talking about George Selleck. He was my favorite player in those Stanford years. He would havegone to Washington High school for sure if his Dad didn't move to Compton. He must have been a great high school student to have been admitted to Stanford. Right???

At the last Republican dinner in Rossmoor, a woman was also 101 years old. Guess what????We went to the same high school in SF (Lowell). She remembered my basketball coach. .. Small world...
