At this point, probably best to change the name of this board from Men's basketball to Fox complaints.

Every thread ends up there, literally every one, it's exhausting. This board has become depressing and that's the users fault. Too much focus on the negative. In fact, that's the only focus.

As a CAL fan, the months before the season were always the best, anticipating the new players and fantasizing about an improved team.
This board ruins this time of year for me. No hope. No interest in talking about the skill set of our players. The assumption that no CAL players improves from one year to the next. Of course no one can be taught to rebound and throw an outlet pass. There's something about the soil around Haas pavilion that prevents that. I just prefer not to **** in my own cereal, there's plenty of other people to do that for me.

Please post on the warriors, or Wembanyama. Lots of exciting, winning, forward looking stuff going on over there! And nothing to do with Fox.

That is exactly the time when positivity is most needed. That path upward has to begin with hope, then faith, and it begins in the mind. Fox and the team would certainly welcome our support.

LMAO. Can Hope, Faith and Mind shoot because we'll need it on this team!

Seriously though, there are probably no fan bases with more hope than the Cal fan base. Every year we hope to see the program on an upward trajectory and we've seen the exact opposite more often than not, yet people still care. That is really not the issue holding us back.

Fox seems really excited about Newell. He has played so little the last few years he is an X factor and he could really surprise. The biggest issue I see is he plays the same position as Alajiki and Celestine (when he comes back), arguably our two most promising returning players. We seem concentrated at PG and SF. We will likely see 2 PGs on the floor often and one of the SFs probably needs to play some at PF.

We lost our 4 highest scorers from one of the lowest scoring teams in the country, but that is now almost an annual event. A lot of new faces and guys we have not seen much will have a chance to step up. That is always interesting and fun. No matter how bad our team/coach, I always love the players, the guys that wear the Cal jersey and will be fellow alums.

Supposedly, Fox considers Newell a 3-4 and he is something like 6-8, 220.

I am moderately optimistic about the coming season, especially with a host of new players, most of whom seem to have some potential. Let's try and enjoy the games and then deal with rest of it after we find out how good we are. I've been attending Cal Basketball games for 40+ years and am no dummy (unless doing that makes me a dummy... opinions will vary): I'm not expecting huge improvement, only incremental. But if there's any month in which to be positive, it's October.

Newell is the player to be optimistic about because he has not really played in two years, so I have no idea what he will be like. Two years ago he showed some diverse skills and fairly good shooting and athleticism for a guy 6'7'' or 6'8''. Fox has talked him up, but you know how that goes.

The rest of the players will be like 10% better than they were last year. Which makes me unable to fake enthusiasm, no matter what month it is. I was excited about next year's recruit Rodney Brown, who I think will be an NBA 3-and-D guy similar to Allen Crabbe, but he has left us. Hopefully he will come back.

The other issue that dampens optimism is how the players do not fit together. It would be better if there were some above average athletes who are learning basketball combined with some lesser athletes with basketball skills. (Having both in a single player is out of the question.) This year it is too much from the first bin.

Anyone have any idea how the PAC is shaping up this year? I assume the usual suspects (UCLA, Zona) will be good and USC seems to be doing well. Oregon's brought in some really highly rated recruits the last couple classes. Can anyone speak to the state of the PAC?

The consensus is that we should stay out of the cellar and finish above the Beavers @ #11. The big question is how we are going to score, with our top 4 scorers gone, especially interior scoring with Kelly transferring out. Askew is seen as a big question mark,with upside potential. Most don't know Celestine is out. Everyone is sleeping on Newell.

As for the rest of the conference, it sounds like much of the middle will be improving from lackluster performances last year. Utah is a big question, whether they wil be with OSU and Cal at the bottom again or move up to the big group of middle teams.

You could very well be right, but I think there so many more personal positives supporting his decision, that it appears to be a good one for him. I think Kelly left for personal reasons, and I trust his statement about why he left, and don't see any reason not to. He said, in part, "........I would like to thank the entire Cal staff for all they have done for me over the last 4 years, I have enjoyed my time here tremendously. I would like to announce that I am committing to UCSB to pursue my masters degree, compete for a championship, and work towards my lifelong goal of playing in the NBA."

I think these are real goals for him. He spent four tough losing years at Cal, where the coach, the AD, and the players had to bear the heavy doses of criticism from fans and press alike. He made really good improvement under Fox and the Cal staff year by year. He could not reach the success he might have had with better facilitators or other good options, so that defenses would concentrate so much on him. I mean, he gave the best he could to us for four years. How much blood does he have to give to one school? Many players could stay with their original schools for a 5th and even a 6th year, but I'd guess most grad transfers feel they might like to try something different for a change.

Kelly said he wanted to play on a team that could win a championship. UCSB has a good coach, a good program, and a great arena, the Thunderdome, in which to play basketball. No fan there will likely be negative, or booing. It holds 6000 fans, and the place rocks, like Haas used to rock. As for his NBA aspirations, he might be thinking he can be more dominant with better facilitators playing in a lesser conference.

Kelly has done well academically, and he wants to get his masters degree. Cal did not have a masters program in his field, so there is that. I believe when Kareem South transferred here, one of his reasons was he could get courses in his field, medicine. Ryan Betley, who attended Wharton's business school, was able to get graduate business courses here at Haas Business School.

Finally, every single teammate of Kelly's who arrived at Cal in his class is now gone, as well as friends he made among his other classmates. It is often said that the friends you keep for life are the ones you meet in college.

I think he just felt it was time to move on.

I mostly agree with this. I wish this was a write up on why a player chose to transfer to us as opposed to us losing our best returning player, who had been loyal to us, despite our other best returning players leaving.

You know what exhausted me? Watching the teams Fox has put on the floor try to play basketball. Why would I have hope. I won't bother you much with this because I've checked out rather than watch this program flounder around while the admins apparently just don't give a damn.

The idea that it is the fault of posters is laughable

It is because really anyone that knows BB knows that Fox is a dead man walking. It is unthinkable that we win with this line up more than 12-14 games and finish better than 10th in the Pac12. After that is is also unthinkable - except that we are Cal so these things do have to be contemplated - that Fox will be fired and we will roll the dice. There is no recruiting news because it isn't clear we ARE recruiting and if we are it is I am sure nice kids to lack pac12 talent. Near as I can tell no one on our staff has a clue when it comes to social media so there is limited buzz. The program has alienated people like Shocky1 who, warts and all, PASSIONATELY cares about the program and the kids associated.

like last year my Pac12 TV subscription will remain in hibernation. The conference makes it impossible to stream individual games or do a Pac12 only deal. So I will catch the team as we lose by a dozen or so points in BORING basketball, 5-6 times this year, hoping that the change in March will get us a real coach. But it is JK, so those hopes are....laughable.

I agree with you but those of us who want more positive discourse and hope on this board cannot fall into the trap of complaining about the negative. Change starts with us. Those of us who want more positive things to focus on need to work to find the silver linings in a situation that objectively is challenging to do so.

This board is organized into threads. Find something positive to focus on and make a thread about it.

I found Coach Fox's last zoom session encouraging. He's building a team that he likes and thinks that the talent level is higher and deeper that it has been in past seasons. I hope he takes more time to do sessions like this. Just a couple more than he is used to doing would help give those of us who are looking for the positive, details to focus on that can create a feeling of hope and anticipation for the season and the program.

I'm rooting for the Bears and for Coach Fox. There is more talent available that can be effectively utilized by the power house recruiting programs. With the transfer portal, we should be able to steadily improve the talent of the team. Just a couple of good recruits can shift the trajectory of the program in basketball.

In his presser, Coach Fox acknowledged that the lack of depth on previous teams necessitated the slow pace of play in previous seasons and that with a deeper team, he is looking to play more up tempo. That will be a welcome change!

I agree with you but those of us who want more positive discourse and hope on this board cannot fall into the trap of complaining about the negative. Change starts with us. No. It's not time to change the name of this board. It is time to change the coaching staff. It is also time to change the athletic director. The adults in the room, so to speak, deserve all of the negative energy directed at them. I am glad that the players are getting the experiences that they are, but until Fox and Knowlton are gone, there is little to be positive about. They, along with Jones, took a program with potential to break through and become a regular contender and destroy it.

Every thread ends up there, literally every one, it's exhausting. This board has become depressing and that's the users fault. Too much focus on the negative. In fact, that's the only focus.

As a CAL fan, the months before the season were always the best, anticipating the new players and fantasizing about an improved team.
This board ruins this time of year for me. No hope. No interest in talking about the skill set of our players. The assumption that no CAL players improves from one year to the next. Of course no one can be taught to rebound and throw an outlet pass. There's something about the soil around Haas pavilion that prevents that. I just prefer not to **** in my own cereal, there's plenty of other people to do that for me.


There are two solutions to this. One a 20-win season. The other is a new coach.

I think with the current coach, those two ideas are incompatible.
