California Golden Bears versus Chico State (Party) Animals. 7 PM tip-off, tonight at Haas! (exhibition game)

If you didn't think tickets were still available at this late date, think again, I'm sure you can find a way in. (I already got my ticket and don't need to worry.) This should be a great look at our roster... guys we've seen a lot of and guys we haven't:

Brand New:

ND Okafor: Is he gonna develop into a DeVon Hardin, but with more hoops savvy?
Grant Newell: Is he for real, or was it just hype?
Devin Askew: Maybe this guy can really play!
Dejuan Clayton: Solid addition to the backcourt of a team trying to get to .500?

Young Returnees:

Monty Bowser: Remember that guy? How's he doin' now?
Sam Alajiki: Imagine if he took a huge step forward!
Obinna Anyanwu: Showed flashes and willingness to battle towards the end of last season!
Marsalis Roberson: SF Chron Bay Area Player of the Year as a junior at O'Dowd (over senior Bowser)!

The Veterans:

Joel Brown: Supposedly has been working on that shot!
Kuany Kuany: Big senior year coming up?
The Big German: Achtung, baby! He's gonna say with a smile, "Now, who said I'd never make it?"

Drink your Kool-Aid while it's still sweet, people: See you at the Haas!

Anyone know if there will be a play-by-play? Or if there's a twitter account to follow for tonight. Trying to do everything I can to get out of work by 6:30pm, but not sure if its likely. Really wish I was able to be in Haas tonight.

Final Four for whom -- Travis DeCuire? This time he will have all the leverage.

That sparks a horrible thought (misery loves company, so I'll share it): If our AD went to hire another head basketball coach, who would be the final four candidates this time?

Back from the game. (Forgive me for responding to my own post.)

First of all, please note that my reference to "Final Four" (thread title) meant "final four" in the conference standings.

Player notes, following the above template:

Okafor: Bright spot. Can play. Soft touch from the line portends good things.
Newell: Probably can play, but missed a lot of shots tonight.
Askew: Not afraid to hoist 'em. Shake and bake.
Clayton: Not a shooter. Will be a rotational guard on this "final four" team.

Bowser: played a few quiet minutes
Alajiki: last January's 60% from beyond the arc was a mirage, but ran up some decent numbers tonight
Anyanwu: cut off his dreads
Roberson: Bright spot. Got some things done. Still has weird-azz shot, but makes the FTs with it.

Brown: something about a leopard and spots
Kuany: still struggles to consistently impact a game but showed flashes
Thiemann: double/double No, he won't play in the NBA, SFCity, but decent center on a weak team like Cal's

Overall: Poor showing, score-wise and eye-test-wise. They need to box out on the boards. Defensive lapses. Offense not coherent. I expect some of that will get shored up, but . . .

Of note: Russ Critchfield is an Asst. Coach for the (Party) Animals! The announcer gave him mention and Michael Pitts, Dave Butler and Dick Kuchen (former players and boss, respectively) were there at courtside for him. Cool!

Nice recap! From the video clips and box score, best news (by far) was Okafor. Kudos to Fox with a major assist from fellow Irishman Alajiki!

Huh. I thought the same players with the same coach would have a magical transformation during the offseason. What a disappointment. It is still only year 4 of the rebuild, so I am hopeful. And maybe with that 100 million dollar practice facility better players will come to Cal.

Stay the course! Invest and Attack!

Russ Critchfield? From the mid 1960s Cal teams? He must be in his late 70s. Good to hear about him though.

As for Cal going to the Final Four, I'm sure tickets are still available on Stub Hub.

I believe CalBears.com said Critchfield is 76. For you Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen Z, Rusty Critchfield was a primo Cal guard in the late 60s, then an Asst. Coach under both Dick Edwards and Dick Kuchen in the mid-late '70s and early '80s.

And again, now that the euphoria is already starting to wear off, "final four" means final four in the conference standings (We can do that!).

No ushers. Throngs of Chico fans sitting in the ow chairbacks. No concessions open on the upper level. They are selling beer but no one was buying. I didnt make the trek downstairs for a pepsi. I would have if upstairs stairs had been open. Huge line at the one open concession-stand l ushers all standing on the floor doing nothing.

He also was later the coach at Butte College. Aaron Rodgers has said one of the turning points in his athletic career was a leadership class he took from Rusty there. I always assumed that Rusty must have had something to do with Tedford coming up to look at Garrett Cross, which was how he spotted ARod.

I think the road to the Final Four began at the Cow Palace in Daly City, the night that Cal lost the NCAA Final to Ohio State in March of 1960. It has been a long ride, with some ups and downs, and more work left to do.

Go Bears!

Semis and the the Final game. The full experience. Cal defeated Cincinnati and Oscar Robertson in a very close first game, while Ohio State with Jerry Lucas, John Havlicek, Larry Siegfried, Joe Roberts (plus Bobby Knight off the bench) coasted past NYU and Satch Sanders in the other semi. The next night, Ohio State blew out the Bears, mostly by shooting 85% in the first half, while Imhoff missed most of the game with a cold.

In 1958, the Western Regional NCAA was held at the Cow Palace, with Cal losing to Seattle and Elgin Baylor in the Regional Final, called the Elite 8 nowadays. The score was tied with 5 seconds to go, and the Bears inbounded the ball at the far end of the floor, and then made 4 or 5 passes without a dribble to get the ball to Al Buch, who missed a floater that would have won the game. The Bears lost in OT. At the Finals, Seattle won their game, during which Elgin Baylor broke a rib. Kentucky won the other game. In the Final, Baylor played hurt against Kentucky, and Seattle lost. Newell said afterward that if Cal had been able to beat Seattle, he felt confident that Cal would have beaten Kentucky to win the championship. Cal did win it in the following year, 1959.

And you are now my favorite poster. I didn't used to be optimistic. It was all the negativity here on the Bear Insider forums that drove me to be (cautiously) optimistic. It is actually much better for my sleep and my digestion than being pessimistic all the time. After all, there is not a damn thing any one of us can do about the situation here, so why suffer over it every day?

PS. I was mistaken, and shouldn't have responded. I see you were replying to Big C, not me. I can't touch him for optimism, but I am trying. Even a little bit of optimism goes a long way.

Maybe that's how we can entice Cal admin to fund football and basketball! Say it is a public health necessity-- our fans will materially sleep and eat better when we win!

And Big C is one of the best posters. funny comments & good blend of optimism and realism

Sadly I don't think Admins think our sinking ship is a problem or a failing, rather the natural course of evolution. We aren't built to need money sports. We aren't winning fewer Nobel prizes each year because football and basketball are doing poorly.
