Not sure how good Chico State is supposed to be, but they were giving us a run for our money into the second half. We have pulled away by 9 pts with 7:46 left.

Note to self: never form opinions about players from exhibition games. Been burned too many times. Ignoring this advice: Devin Askew looks good as does Newell.

Nuts, it's now a 5 pt game with 5 min left.

Yeah I knew they were div 2. I was hoping they were maybe over achievers?

I guess this will be a long year….

I think they were the #15 D2 team in the final coaches' poll last year.

Last year they played UCLA in an exhibition and lost 61-100 with all the UCLA reserves playing.

They are good for a D2 team, but they are a D2 team.

Chico State made the Elite Eight in last year's NCAA D-II tournament.

But, yeah, Division II.

They looked ready to play. We did not.

Supposedly the 4 point guards (roll that around your head about roster balance) were unable to practice. 2 sick, one hurt, 1 with class conflicts.

But still no excuse for 4 minute scoring droughts. It will be a LONG season.

We were at the game. Following are a few observations

- Crowd was OK for an exhibition game. The Chico fans were excited to be in Berkeley and almost got their heart's desire. The Chico fans still consider Cal a D1 program and would have celebrated the upset.

- Cal has a deeper team with more ready bodies than the last two years.
- Lots of SF players. Many of the Bears appeared to be in the 6'5" to 6'7" range with good athleticism and long builds.
- Askew took a lot of shots. No one else seemed eager to shoot. I expect Askew will do better than 25% in most games.
- Okafor is strong. A much needed addition to the post.

- The newcomers were OK individually.
- Cal's defense was decent. Brown remains a defensive stand out.
- Cal's offense was poor. Movement was not coordinated. Passing was sloppy. Long way to go on offense.
- Rebounding should have been better against a short Chico State D-2 team.
