The bright spot from the box score and the videos people have posted is Okafor.

11 pts, 5 rebounds and 1 assist in only 9 minutes of play. 3-5 from the floor and 5-6 from the line. Big men can look great against small teams like this, but I really liked his footwork and decisiveness.

Seems like a potential double-double guy from the get go. Fills a major need with Kelly departing and Lars leaving next year. The only question will be how Fox utilizes him with Lars this year.

Kudos to Fox with an assist from fellow Irishman Alajiki.

I am less sanguine about our backcourt. We shot 11% (2-18) from 3.

Still don't know where our scoring will come from.

Two bold predictions:
1. Cal will shoot better than 11% from 3
2. Okafor will average a double single. When he gets guys he own size ... check out youtube

Sorry for yet another negative post but I can't believe its the fourth year of Fox and this might be the worst team yet. Imagine the talent level being so low that you have to refer to the 'rebuild' in year 4!!!

We're just not a good team. At least last year I felt that because our top couple scorers like Andre, Jordan, and Grant, we stood a chance to occasionally surprise teams or put together close-ish games as a result of the really slow tempo. And as a result we won vs the Oregon teams, thoroughly beat Stanford, etc.

This year we seriously just look bad. I'll hold off on declaring us destined 12th place because I know it was just the first scrimmage but rarely do I ever watch a team and think that we should simply not be playing at this level of basketball. ND does look the part, it's unfortunate that the rest of the team does not.

The trend is clearly downward as we lose the recruits that Jones brought in, which at the time people complained about.

12th place is a relative position. Pretty sure this Cal team will not be as good as last year's 11th place team but I want to see OSU and Utah first, though I do think they have better coaches.

Those who didn't play were Hyder, Celestine, Ragsdale, and McCloskey. I know Celestine is injured, I suspect Hyder might be injured, and I suppose the game was too close to play walk-ons.

Wasnt Hyder injured most of last year? Whats wrong? Same injury?

When people like Christ make comments such as "there is more to coaching than winning and losing," then frankly, it would be best if this team absolutely crashes and burns into an embarrassing 12th place finish, thereby putting an unavoidable spotlight on our incompetent coach.

That's the only way to draw this era to an inevitable conclusion in a reasonable amount of time.

I hope you all realize that the Cal AD has intentionally chosen not to support the basketball program, including the Haas amenities and game day experience that make things fun for fans to attend. The program died the day Wyking Jones was hired. I cynically suggest that those of you who are rooting for the team to succeed, when it is not even supported by the AD, are rather foolish.

Unfortunately, if the Fox era does end, that doesn't mean the AD is all of a sudden going to start supporting the basketball program. But it might mean we luck out into a talented but young and inexperienced coach.

We've already finished 12th and 10th in the past two years. I don't think it's possible to shame this administration.

yes - stress fracture in foot last season and has ongoing lower back/bulging disc issues now.

I still think we can be incrementally better than we were last year. 2-3 more wins. No, I wouldn't bet money on it. I am not going to draw too many negative conclusions from last night, just like I'm not going to expect Okafor to score in double figures (this season).

It did not die when Jones was hired, it was an injury, but it was only two years, we could have easily recovered. He had a young starting 5 of Vanover, Kelly, Sueing, Bradley and Paris that might have been retained with the right hire, who then might have recruited even more talent to that strong base.

The patient was wounded, but could have easily recovered and thrived with the right person. Instead we hired a practitioner of quack medicine who is administering leaches as the patient bleeds to death.

DJ Thorpe went on an "injury retirement" where he can finish school on scholarship. However, my understanding is that we are limited in the number of times we are allowed to do that. (I wanna say something like once every three years.) True?
