Optimism?

As the ref is about to tip off, the lights suddenly go out. WWE music starts playing. The announcers go "What's going on? What's happening? Is that- oh my, thats VICTOR WEMBANYAMA"

Victor walks out of the tunnel dressed in Cal gear-- SURPRISE!! He's forgoing his opportunity to play in the NBA in order to pursue a coveted degree at the Haas business school. He's committing to play effective immediately. But wait. What's this? The music switches. The spotlights focus on the tunnel. There's another person walking out. Who is that? What? Can it be? It's STEVE KERR! Steve walks out, and announces to the crowd "I am your new coach!" The 11,000 fans who packed the pavilion (they were all there early for the Bear Growls contest) roar with delight!! Steve Kerr announces that per a secret, very well-nested legal loophole in California law that the scholars at Berkeley Law noticed, the practice facility will be fully-funded and begin construction right now.

Invigorated, the Bears cruise out to a 132-43 win vs the overmatched Aggies. Every game we play now instantly sells out and reporters from all over the nation flock to be able to cover our matchups (Pac-12 Network still televises our games so nobody is able to view it via TV). We easily win the NCAA tournament and are declared one of the best college hoops teams in history. Knowlton announces his plans to add 7 new teams, including underwater basket weaving and competitive bungee jumping, using the windfall from the March Madness revenue.

How was that?

I'll admit that I'm excited for the game and I hope this team shocks the college basketball world this year. I think we push multiple game threads to pages 2 and 3 this season. Let's go.

Last year UC Davis was ranked #207 in Sagarin, one slot ahead of San Diego, who we beat by 5 points. Of course both were better than UC San Diego who beat us by 13.

Hmm Tulsa is not close to Fayetteville. I guess he wasn't homesick after all. Couldn't be as he was willing to live in Vegas when going to Findlay Prep for his senior year of high school. He was glory chasing and ironically could have had the most chance at being at star at Cal.

Well close is relative. Not that he would be going home every weekend. It's clear he's been chasing like a lot of kids that do prep academies these days. Can't blame him, just that his best position at the next level might have been with us since he would have been featured.

Agree - The Mom is the decision maker for Him and saw them at the Chase Center when Arkansas was there past March. I brought it up and She was pleasant but firm, that "once Wyking was gone, so were we"

The score is 62-61 Davis with 30 seconds to go. Cal has the ball. Pass for an open 15 footer, shot goes up... BRICK. Cal loses 62-61.

Hey 4thGen was wondering if you had any thoughts on Wyking's tenure? Since I've only experienced Fox, I don't have too much perspective on it-- from posts on the board I think the general sense is that he was a fair recruiter but a poor coach. Is this your sentiment as well? Was it right to fire him? Thx in advance, always like hearing your thoughts

Not 4G, but I can safely say that as bad as the sentiment is for Fox, it was even worse for Jones. Anyone suggesting otherwise is just miss remembering. It was so bad that when Knowlton floated the trial baloon of retaining Jones one more year to avoid his buyout, he was gone 2 days later. In hindsight, that may have been the better way to go. Although Fox would almost certainly still been available, we could have afforded someone better.

Agreed. Fan sentiment against Jones was possibly even greater than against Dykes, which ignoring other more controversial factors, comes in large part from having historically bad years immediately following historical highs. Knowlton waited too long to decide to fire Jones then moved far too fast to hire Fox. The NCAA Tournament was still in the early rounds, the college basketball world is preoccupied. Unless you are trying to nab a hot up and coming coach there is no rush. Fox, or many similar unemployed coaches, will still be there. Let coaches know you have an opening. When the opening was known, Kidd expressed interest in the job but Knowlton had already decided on Fox. Moreover, have informed advisors other than a self-interested search firm.

Optimistic view: 63-58 UC davis.

Realistic view: 71-59 UC Davis with fox getting another extension to complete his rebuild.

He was in Fayetteville, at Arkansas. He transferred to ORU for this season after another Razorbacks center took most of his playing time.

Wyking's tenure was a disaster and while he was a decent to good recruiter, He had a very weak staff, was in over his head and was dealt a nearly impossible roster to turn around quickly. Believe his first season had the second youngest roster in all of D1. Just back from the game and echo many of the comments about how bad the team looked. Its just one game, but the weaknesses of poor shooting, very limited ball handling are glaring. Not sure who the team can look to - when a basket is needed. Just a weak roster and depressing that UC Davis, could break down the Bears offensively and had multiple ball handlers and shooters vs our Team.

It was a great day for Cal basketball. Rodney Brown committed. And hopefully he does not have the pac12 network. This year's team, well, I mean, when the new players are worse than the previous players, which has been true every year under Fox, you are not going to win many.

Gotcha. Thanks, great to get some understanding of what things were like pre-Fox. And genuinely pretty saddened with the play today. Last year was unhappy with the UCSD loss but I thought we at least looked a little physical and had some good elements. Today's play was just poor. I am very much leaning towards determining the staff's comments about our "improved length and depth" as optimistic-coach speak. Initially I thought we might outperform last year but it looks like losing our top 3 scorers has outweighed any additions we made. Darn. Looks like a long year ahead. At least we got Rodney Brown!
