oops!

I did a search on Devin Curtis and it came up with the video of Devin Williams and Curtis Williams, so I did get the wrong guy .. too bad because Curtis Williams looks like a good player .... sorry!

I searched for more videos, but couldn't find much. His school Southern California Academy is new (only year 2) but I didn't see him in any of their videos so he might have been injured. SCA is apparently a high-level basketball academy and recently beat Findley Prep, but perhaps he played there last season, and not sure how they were given it was their first year.

I did find his short highlight video. He doesn't look like a back-to-the-basket player, and his moves and shooting look somewhat mechanical like he is just learning them. If he's been injured he hasn't had enough court time to refine them yet, so is probably still very raw offensively:

Its funny how these things go. In that video his stroke looks nice to me but his athleticism doesn't wow you. Time will tell…

It is as why I was thinking he could compliment Okafor. On offense he could be like Grant, step away from the basket and hopefully knock down shots, whike Okafor provides inside scoring and rebounding. On defense, he would be the rim protector while Okafor defends the PFs.

Might have been strategic signing with Cal in the early signing period before Fox gets canned.

Curtis was hurt a few years back and lost a season and lost a year of BB then his HS team lost a season because of COVID. His Junior year was his first HS basketball season. The film you see is from his AAU play this Spring and Summer (recent and fully healthy).

He's a hidden gem for sure given his size, build and athletic upside. Likely will take a minute before he can contribute to Cal.
I am not sure what this means. His size and upside are good, but his build is rail thin. A work in progress, maybe.
Agreed was not offered by UCSB though they researched him hard and were fairly interested. Definitely a work in progress and not a player to count on for more than 5-10 minutes a game likely his first season. Brown will play, though also will take a season to develop and hopefully make a impact his second season.. Bottom line, the roster needs a major overhaul as per 3 former Cal players tonight - only one player on the roster has potential to be an impact player And make money playing post Cal career at a high level. Any idea what staff/Knowlton's thoughts on performance thusfar are? I assume unhappy with Davis loss and performance from first half today. Secondly any idea how many schollies we'll have to give out after this season for the portal (estimate)?

they did - reach out to me when convenient. Midge and Jordan are with Charlotte, Paris is local and has started a car business and other endeavors. They are sad at the current lack of talent and diminishing support amongst Cal fans. They definitely have a preference for direction of the team.

I have been talking up Newell. A rough night tonight, and he needs to get stronger, but he has talent. Brown might not be ready, but the team is ready for him, and he will have to get a lot of minutes.

I have been sounding the alarm about the talent over the last three years. I am a pessimist, but I was not wrong.

gk, richard is a nba scout & knows more about shooting mechanics than anybody on the current staff...he also still has connections at modesto christian which got arguably the west coast's best player in jamari phillips who despite a great gpa is not even considering cal which is also hurting the football team cuz the west coast's best 2024 offensive tackle prospect manasse itete from the congo is living with the phillips family

wilkes is a high profile nba agent

both of them are good friends with theo robertson & lou richie

it's a small world (afterall)#

Would that short list include Celestine if he were 100% healthy?
Shocky1

stu, celestine is a nice college player, he does not got the elite explosiveness & athleticism that is necessary to play in the nba, you have to be able to defend one on one in the league

Not to mention that Mr. Phillips was hanging around this board two years ago and wanted his son to go to Cal so he could watch him play easily. Now Phillips has blown up, so maybe he would not have come anyway, but to go from father in pocket to not even considered is sad. But typical.

Thanks Shocky1, it's too bad some many qualified former players like Midgley, Theo are not apart of the program. I'm sure they both are doing well. I know Coach Lou Ritchie is highly regarded. Having him even in a position that director or player personal like Trent Johnson was would make a big difference I bet. Having Midgley and Theo teaching shooting would help a lot of these kids.

who was the guy courtside today in the green top (close to center court) that 1-2 refs kept chatting with?
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
gk, to be honest with you, hiring the unlikeable trent johnson as the director of bb operation for hundreds of thousand dollars for a couple of years was the 1st red flag re: mark fox that jimmy k failed to notice, that money should not have been wasted on a guy that multiple players thought was a "azz****"...that money could've been spent on hiring an aggressive under 30 black assistant coach

but your point is well taken, theo, richard & lou would all be major upgrades to the current staffing other than andrew francis that should be retained...berkeley grads are uniquely qualified to sell the magical combination of world class academics & athletics at cal, outsiders think the necessity of high gpas in a great excuse for their lousy recruting efforts & results

sluggo, the phillips failed recruitment should be a sign that any d1 athletic director in the united states would view as a contributing factor to a coaching change, jimmy "shell game" k extended him instead

when i met jim for the 1st time ever back in corvallis at the bears football game, i explained how my termination from cal's monster class involved someone unethically sharing my confidential thoughts in an email with wyking & that it involved walk on dominic proctor & mcdonalds all american chase jeter from the las vegas stars whose head coach told me he was blackballing the basketball program as long as wyking was the head coach

looking me in the eyes (we're the same height), jim had no idea whose the las vegas stars...knowlton is a good person with good intentions but he's failed to take an interest and develop his full grasp of what it takes to run successful football & men's basketball programs all the while trying to build his empire of 30+ financially unsustainable sport teams that's all gonna get blown away like a sand castle when the 78 year old benevolent chirst retires & the next chancellor stops the current almost $30,000,000 subsidy of the athletic department's annual expenses...and that's gonna create a ****show of epic proportions

Shocky1, you really believe coach Francis should be retained. What part of the game does he coach on the team.? How well is he a recruiter. I cannot remember at least one 4* player recruited on Fox's team in the last four years. We have plenty of projects on the squad and guys who are odd fits. There is very little athleticism, no dribble drivers who can dish or shoot the ball and we definitely have no perimeter shooters.

If a new coach came in, would players be released from their scholarships, not that I wish that on these young men?
Shocky1
How long do you want to ignore this user?
multiple sources directly on the player's side of recruiting have told me that andrew francis is a trustworthy likable recruiter with good energy

but agreed all 4 coaches, the oldest coaching staff in d1 basketball (something that has probably never crossed jimmy k's mind with his intense focus on the upstart women's quidditch team) need to be held accountable for the fact that more than half of this roster got seriously flawed shooting mechanics

honestly it's hard for me to watch from further afar after the j-mat & the bird cal's monster class pure shooting era to watch some of these guys shoot 3 pointers and i don't blame our hard working student athletes at all, they deserve better coaches to further their shooting development

I understand you are close to the program and may not feel comfortable repeating what they have said. I appreciate you answering my question sir.

It sounds like they want to see changes at the coaching position. I really believe it's time to move on from Coach Fox and most of his staff. I feel we need to get the excitement back in the program, with a great coach who can recruit with the big boys and can contend for PAC 12 championships. Thanks Again 4thGenCal.
