Anyone going to the K state game? Predictions? Who do you think will start?

I'll be there. Making my father drive, in the expectation I'm going to need alcohol after watching it.

We'll see whether Fox downplaying K-State to accentuate that Davis is a good team, was a smart thing to do. LOL.

This rivalry has some interesting history. Kansas is basketball country, and K-State has had some good teams. It hasn't been a good rivalry for Cal. They have played 7 times, and Cal has won only once. So if there is pressure on our young Bears, that may add a little to it. Pete Newell's Cal teams played K-State 3 times, and lost all three games, and Cal's coach and rosters back then were superior to what we have now.

In the mid 1950s, Cal was good, but not yet ranked, and Newell was seeking top opponents to play his teams, to prepare his players for the best competition. He set up home and home series with both #1 Kansas and Wilt Chamberlain, and #3 Kansas State with 1st team All-American Bob Boozer. Cal played Kansas in 1956 and 1957, and played Kansas State in 1957 and 1958. In 1957 Cal would lose 58-44 to Kansas State in Kansas, but Cal would eventually go on to reach the Elite 8 of the NCAA.

I went to Harmon with my dad for the 1958 game, which was only the 4th game of the season. Cal was unranked, but the game was very close. In the first half Kansas State managed to get a couple of breakaway buckets on long downcourt passes by Don Matusak, the Kansas State point guard, to grab the lead at halftime. Matusak was the younger brother of San Francisco 49er linebacker Marv Matusak. I'd been to a lot of Newell's Cal games, and had never seen any of his teams get burned by a fast break like that. Boozer, a very athletic big man, was the big star of the game, scoring around 30 points. The second half was as hard-fought as the first half. I suspect the Bears got a lecture at halftime about getting back quickly on defense. Cal did not give up any fast break buckets in the second half, but Cal still ended up losing by 68-65. Even with the tough loss, you could see that the young Cal team was going to be very good that year. In the end, Cal lost that game, because they could not make up for those two first half fast break buckets. I went to all the home games the rest of the season, and I never saw Cal give up another bucket on a long downcourt pass that year.

After that game, even though Cal had lost a close one, the AP poll gave Cal a #15 ranking, and Cal would go on to win the NCAA tournament that year, 1959.

Does Rolando Blackman still play for K-State? If not, I think we'll roll.

I'm going! (Saw Clayton a little bit against Chico. He's a rotational guard and not a shooter.)

Thanks SF for the great memory

Here is one person's view of K State (projects they finish 10th out of the 10-team Big 12.

Sounds like K-State is a little like Cal, but unlike Cal, the coach went heavy to the transfer portal.

10 KANSAS STATE

What we know: This team should be interesting, at least. Mississippi State point guard transfer Cam Carter led the team with 13 points during its exhibition win earlier this week. He'll need to make a leap in his second season of college hoops. This team is full of transfers and we'll need to see them play some games against real competition before we know a whole lot.
What we don't know: Again, how does it all come together? Jerome Tang hit the transfer portal hard in order to fill what was basically an empty roster after Bruce Weber was fired last spring. This is his first go-around as a Power 5 head coach. I think he's going to be a good one, but I don't know how good his first team in Manhattan is going to be.
X-Factor: Florida transfer Keyontae Johnson is back on the floor for the first time in two years after a heart ailment held him out of action in Gainsville. He was a first-team All-SEC player before collapsing on the court on Dec. 12, 2020. If he gets back to that level, Kansas State could be good enough to beat anybody on any given night.

Not to worry. K-State hired Don Nelson, who traded Mitch away for some underachieving stiff.

Or maybe that happened on some other team. ;-)

I had a friend who always got that name wrong. He often called him Rich Mitchmond.

After watching that game yesterday, I think that if this team can stay relatively healthy, I don't think they finish 10th in the Big 12.

So how did you like the game. especially the comeback from 20 points down to 1 point down? These early games are tough to watch, pretty sloppy, but this one had a little excitement at least. Too bad we couldn't keep it up.

Good half time adjustments, maybe.

We're probably not as bad as we looked in the first half and not as good as we looked in the second. But now and then we might put two good halves together and get a win.

KState is a work in progress under a first year coach. They built up a big lead, pulled the starters and went cold, Cal caught up. KState reinserted the starters and they pulled away to an easy victory on the road.

yes. Tough to watch. I posted on another thread that the comeback demonstrates that the holes in this team are more about coaching than talent.
