Despite the constant losing Cal has brought back the same assistant coaches for all four years. I wonder what it would take for Fox not to want to run it back with the same crew.

(I know about Trent Johnson, but I think the other three have been on the bench every year.)

It's not crazy when you think about who his boss is. Changing staff requires effort. Knowlton extended Fox after setting a Cal losing record, so why would anyone in his position bother putting in effort when your boss just hands you more money for being terrible at your job.

In football there are so many players and units that you need to delegate, so hiring good coordinators and position coaches is critical.

However, in basketball, especially with an authoritarian coach, assistants do not matter so much, since they have no input. Even assistants who are hired to be "recruiters" are hamstrung because the head coach needs to close, the players know ultimately it will be the head coach in charge and all of this is generally known. Shuffling assistants in basketball is not the salve that it can be in football.

What seems strange to me is that Andrew Francis stuck around. He must like Cal and like the area.

Dunno if Andrew Francis has a wife and school-age kids, but I could see him wanting to have them all not get uprooted again and enjoy life here for a while. My cousins in Queens, NY used to always tell me it was their dream to live in California one day, but they didn't live long enough.

Assistants in college football and basketball work their azzes off and move around a lot.

His bio is the only one of the 4 coaches for whom there is no mention of wife and children.

He graduated high school in 1992, so he is probably 48.

Assistants are responsible for skills development. And skills have not been developed.

And for recruiting. Both areas have been awful and its inconceivable upgrades/changes have not been made.

Falls on the AD IMO, though Fox should be smart enough to make the changes on his own.

Assistant coaches can only do so much when the head coach is such a known entity among AAU coaches (9 years at Georgia) and has such a bad reputation. He is going to be the guy yelling at them every day. They cannot escape to their position group. The assistants have to bring in kids from overseas or local kids with no other P6 offers who know what they are getting into and are willing to put up with it.
