Lowest scoring teams in the country

359 Cal 57.5
360 Green Bay 56.8
361 Merrimack 56.4
362 Florida A&M 55.8
363 Mississippi Valley State 55.5

After beefing up our PPG feasting on the easy part of our schedule we are only 2 points out of last place in the country in scoring.

However Arizona is the #1 scoring team in the country and is #1 in Tempo in Ken Pom. Cal is #359 in Tempo. Who will win out?

But we don't just play slow, we play poorly: Cal is #346 in FG% #330 in 3pt%

Zonies are gonna be motivated on Sunday, after getting blown out by Utah on Thursday night.

Because we are Cal and bizarre things happen to us I would not be surprised to see Cal do something like lose in overtime to Arizona.

Probably not happening at McKale. Not after Arizona lost to Utah. Arizona is the best defense we have faced so far and far and away the best offense. Fox will try to slow it down and turn it into a slug fest on defense, like he used to do against Kentucky when he was at Georgia, but we don't have the ball handlers or depth to sustain that. I think it gets very ugly.

I hesitate to post this, and I'm embarrassed to realize I'm thinking it, but the truth of the matter is that at this point, if I'm watching at all, I'm essentially rooting against Cal. I'm not sure how the program gets saved, but one component will be a new coach. And at some point, if he loses enough games in a row, Knowlton may have to do something.

Then again, maybe with buyouts there's nothing he can do for another year or two, so maybe I should go back to rooting for Cal and hoping we win a handful of games this year. But a part of me thinks that in the long run, getting to 0-10, and then 0-15, and then 0-20 may ultimately be the best thing for the program, though I really feel sorry for the poor players who work their asses off to not avail.

I'm pretty sure that would be a sign of the end of Creation.

Woohoo 2 pts/game ahead of Mississippi Valley State. Take that Jerry Rice!

One of the few good memories of Mckale was in 2013. Under Monty, Cal trailed at halftime. During halftime, there was a lovefest honoring Lute Olson. Cal spoiled everything by coming back in the second half to win. It was a great moment.

The events of the last two seasons around Cal Basketball have forced to re-think many long held opinions about college bball. One of those was running up the score against an inferior opponent.

I used to think that was demeaning and poor sportsmanship. But now, I wonder if doing so against a team with an ineffective coach is actually helping them. By 'letting up' on the opposition - they are actually postponing (to some extent) the inevitable house cleaning - whereas a thorough whooping might help the process.

For the first time in 40 years, I may actually be hoping (in the dark recesses of my psyche) that Cal gets embarrassed on the floor. If only to rip off the Band-Aid and help the struggling players who deserve so much better than this ongoing humilation by Fox and Knowlton.

No, those are still students out there and bad sportsmanship has no place in organized sports. No need to embarrass the players in order to make a point about the coach.

If team A cannot stop team B that is a Team A problem. Team B doesn't need to press, for example, when they are up 20 but they shouldn't take the air out of the ball either. If Team A doesn't like having their nose rubbed in it they should get better.

As a coach I have been on the receiving end of this more than once (it happens). There is NOTHING worse than having the other team show mercy to you.

Maybe Knowlton could write a letter to Arizona's AD forfeiting the game out of safety for the student-athletes [psyche].

Arizona's recent loss to Utah(?) should be a teaching moment:

Being the highest scoring team in the nation is not what is important. It doesn't mean squat. What is important is the point differential, which at least needs to be on the plus side for as many games as possible.

Of course, and that is how Ken Pom and Sagarin rank the teams. I didn't say Arizona was the best team.

The reason i pointed it out is because the teams are opposites in style: Arizona plays fast, fastest in the country, scoring the most points while Cal plays slow, nearly the slowest in the country, nearly the lowest scoring. Both cannot happen. So it will be interesting to see which team will be able to impose its will on the other. If Cal can slow down the game, that will reduce the spread, which is the intent.

Its one thing sucking up the ambience of Haas and having a nice dinner before it after. Its quite another thingbto suffer watching a no chance game while at home on a Sunday afternoon. I will be watching the Forty Ninets and maybe checking the score on Espn app.

Of course if Fentons had tv screens one could make a case……Looking forward to Wednesday night and Great China.

Well an 0-8 (now 9) team beat that spread by 10.5 against # 4 so it may be awhile before we see another line that high (it dropped to 23.4 by tip-off)

Don't bet on it! They still have the best defense in the NFL and loads of weapons on offense. Purdy just has to be serviceable and limit mistakes, and they will be fine. He was more than serviceable against the Dolphins yesterday. Plus, when they get into the playoffs, I suspect Lance will be able to play, if needed.
