yes - this narrative his hilarious. I got an earful recently about what ****holes SF and Portland were. I asked them the last time they visited to form that opinion.calumnus said:BearlyCareAnymore said:The crime rate on campus is much better now than when I was in high school in the Bay Area suburbs and back then Southside, Berkeley was THE place for people from my school to go on weekends. My kids see Telegraph Ave as a plus. There is a vitality there that you don't get in a lot of places. Yes, as with any urban environment, there is some bad that goes along with the good. I'd suggest you check out some of the areas in SF where young people go clubbing and consider whether you think Southside is "not a good look for recruiting young athletes". Urban areas come with more of everything, and young people tend to like more. For instance, a lot of fogies on this board think Westwood is "so nice". I find it mind numbingly boring. If I were a coach, I would much rather try to sell an 18 year old on Berkeley (maybe not so much the parents).SFCityBear said:For me, it was Dana and Channing, about 12 AM, 5 years ago. I heard the gun shot, spun around, and watched a guy drop to the pavement. That was the last time I partied in Berkeley.bearister said:JB was a Chieftain said:

Corner of Durant and Telegraph late at night because that adds gunfire to the ambience.
And I'd suspect this kind of thing is not a good look for recruiting young athletes to Cal.
There are a lot of things hurting us in recruiting, but the environs around campus on the whole is not one of them.
15 years ago my daughters and their friends used to ride BART up from Fremont to hang out around Telegraph because it was cool, fun and exciting. 10 years ago my daughter attended Berkeley City College on Center in Downtown Berkeley for the same reasons. The other place they loved to hang out was the Mission in SF, much safer than it used to be but not if you watch Fox News or Newsmax.
Dead silence. They've been programmed to to parrot whatever bs is being pushed. FWIW - these were Stanford Grads.
