Leave it to the AD to fsck up a t-shirt giveaway.

Remember when they used to give away free pizza to the student section? I'd hate to see how they'd mess that one up.

They scheduled a basketball game on a Friday night at the same time as the Big Game Bonfire Rally. Not before, at the same time. Students, the band, cheerleaders (we finally had them) had to choose.

That is just emblematic of an athletic department that is grossly incompetent and devoid of people who have any knowledge of Cal traditions.
For at least the past 15 years, there has been a basketball game the Friday before Big Game. Typically it has been a women's game, but that doesn't change that stat.

Also for the record, the Band usually splits into 4 that night. 2 would deal with parties and events throughout the Bay Area (one set for the East Bay, one for the Peninsula), one would go to the game, and the last and largest group, the entire freshman cohort with some older members, was tasked with going to Bonfire and covering any other campus events.

If we're going to complain, let's not start acting like some of these things aren't new.

That said, the shirt giveaway was also a disaster because of the size - 90% of them were Smalls and the other 10% were Mediums. They didn't even get a reasonable size for a majority of the student body.

"Typically it has been a women's game" so the same?

Has it ever before been a men's basketball game at the same time as the Big Game Bonfire Rally? And if they ever made that mistake before, why repeat it?

i was not at the game, but some said most were S and M (presumably some were L and XL)

a S and M should fit majority of college females

M should fit majority of college Ms (5-10 or 5-11 and under who arent overweight)

im was surprised when a 6-2 college maie track athlete wears size m

Yes, they allowed non students to take the shirts but most left them be cause they were so small and cheap. Why do his on finals week?…

I was at the game. I was with a bunch of students. None of them were happy that the shirts were all smalls and did not fit them.

I can't think of one male person I went to games with as a student who could have fit into a small or medium. And we were all in really good shape. A smaller person can wear a larger size, but it never works the other way around. And I've picked up shirts at Cal games since then that were all large sized, and there was no shortage of them, so this sounds like more incompetence than any kind of assessment of need.

debating the incompetence of Cal t-shirt ordering shows the depth this board has fallen

even burritos are more relevant

but since we are here, i'll continue to debate although it's obvious i'm on the losing end, just like on the topic that i am out of touch and that HS and college age people think nike is for old people and that UA and Chimpion/fruit of the loom are the new w's

all i am saying is that college students are not generally the size of the average 30+ yo

one example i provided was a 6-2 college track athlete who wears a M

i have many other direct datapoints but i thiught he was the best that people can understand

are there many college students who wear L and XL?

of course, but i seriously doubt Cal ordered zero of these

my main point is its fair to blame lots of things on cal athletics and admin, but do were really need to dis everyone associated with Cal down to ordering t-shirt sizes considering they were no bought for non-student fans which are on average larger than the average student?

just sounds like whining to me

It seems like whatever you think of the average size of a college student, the results speak for themselves on this one.

"results"?

one person said the shirts were too small

another person was commenting based on his college days many years ago when people wore shirts loose

I was 6'0" and 170 pounds, played hoops five days a week and swam most days, and I never fit into a medium after my freshman year in high school. It wasn't because I wore shirts loose either. My daughter is that tall but was probably 140 pounds in college and preferred large over a medium. I wasn't talking about 30 year olds. I didn't bring up the topic but it seems like everything is just done with bare minimum effort by this Athletic Department, whereas well-run organizations pay attention to detail. Not to mention that they did the entire t-shirt giveaway when students were gone.

Yes, this is a stupid topic I suppose. But this board hasn't fallen as far as the AD or the basketball program.
stu

You're right about the topic.

My memory from the late 1960s is most Cal men would fit a L and just about anyone would be more comfortable with a size too large than too small.

I also remember women's clothing smaller than 7/8 was hard to find. Some of the smaller women I knew had to shop in the kid's section. Shoes were the opposite, any woman who needed size 10 or larger might have had to settle for sneakers in the men's section.
HoopDreams
How long do you want to ignore this user?
a 6 foot women is average for a college female?

do we know for a fact there were 90% S, 10% M, and no other sizes?

did the male in the t-shirt reference guide i posted go Eastern Mississippi junior college so not relevant for a Cal student?

… not to be argumentative or anything

You'd be surprised. ~40% of Americans are bordering obese, including college students....heck, even the military can't meet its quotas due to weight issues of prospective recruits.
stu

According to the CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/prevalence-maps.html#age

By Education and Age
  • Obesity prevalence decreased by level of education. Adults without a high school degree or equivalent had the highest self-reported obesity (37.8%), followed by adults with some college (35.6%) or high school graduates (35.5%), and then by college graduates (26.3%).
  • Young adults were half as likely to have obesity as middle-aged adults. Adults aged 18-24 years had the lowest self-reported obesity (20.7%) compared to adults aged 45-54 years who had the highest prevalence (39.3%).

umm, "self-reported data"?

Per the actual doctors, ages 12-19 is 22%, and 20+ is ~39%. College students overlap both numbers, so feel free to extrapolate.

I couldn't find anything better. But I assume 20+ covers a pretty wide range (pun intended). FWIW when I go to Cal games it doesn't look like 39% of the students are obese. The CDC page also mentioned variations by education and geography so I would expect on average Cal students to be leaner than West Virginia high school dropouts.

Thankfully I have zero opinions about T-shirt sizes (seriously, we're talking about "typical" body size?) You're dancing with the devil there.
But since I do work in the brand and marketing industry, I do have an opinion about Cal's treatment of loyal season-ticket holders like me. It sucks. I can count how many T-shirts I've gotten, emails saying, "thanks for sticking with us, we're working on it," and small tokens on one closed fist. Cal staff is thinking only damage control, no strategy at all to keep the loyal base they already have. They're smart people, they can do better.

This goes back a long time. What's left after the base has eroded? Not much.
