We played better with Askew out. More players touched the ball. They did not double Brown much. Santa Clara was opportunistic and took the first good shot. As usual, we did not and often threw up,prayers at the end of the shot clock.lars was terrible. Bad hands killed us. Okafor should play more. Our defense on 22 was bad. Their inside guy made a fool, out of T man. I was numb and enjoyed the game. Great seats and easy parking. About. 5 other Cal fans. One couple wearing Bowser jerseys. Concessions weak, worse than The Haas of Pain.now we will use Askews injury as an excuse to lose Wednesday.

Lars had probably his worst game but their PF scored at will against both Okofor and Newell

Brown dominated their PG and drove and scored or made inside passes. one of his best games. but then SC put a bigger stronger guard on him which stopped his drives

2K was invisible after his first shot

Roberson and Bowser had some nice moments

Tough game for Newell overall

Sam tried to assert himself but coaches are telling their players to stay home and dont jump against Cal and take the charge

besides newell and bowser (and askew) does anyone ever take a jump shot?

I admire you guys for at least watching these distressing games. The Bears have had so many good teams over the years. This one plays (and is coached) like high school teams used to play in the 50s.

We have come a long way from Kidd v Nash at Santa Clara

We can only wish Cal played 50's basketball: you know, passing, blocking out, that sort of thing. Nice observation that Cal plays better without Askew. Have to agree. Question is why doesn't the coaching direct Askew to make the team better.

I'm guessing the coaches want Askew to control the ball and to shoot as much as he can. Fox has said they're asking him to do too much. I don't blame Askew if he's doing what the coaches want. If he's not doing what they want I don't think he would get much playing time.

I don't think the team plays better without Askew, but it does make some other players more aggressive

For example, Brown was much more assertive with the ball, but part of that was he could beat his undersized defender so he got to the rack or into the paint more often.

Sam got more aggressive at times too, but it didn't result in anything positive. Newell, Roberson and Bowser were looking for their shot more, with mixed results.

Lars is dependent on getting the ball in the low post

The player I was 'asking' to get more aggressive was senior 2K, but he sometimes disappears in games, and yesterday was a good example.

The thing about Askew is SC went all out to stop him, and he was not turning the ball over under those traps, but instead got the ball out to someone who should have been able to make a play (shot or pass to open man), but we those players were never able to exploit those doubles.

Our lovable coach says almost every presser that he has been unfairly asking Askew (no alliteration intended) to do too much. So you don't have 4 other guys on the court to try to pick up easy buckets somewhere? You've done developing guys like 2K, Sam, Bowser and Roberson? Everything he says and does is so cringe.

Askew is not fast and I've noticed that he constantly carries the ball when he dribbles to the point where it slows him down even more. All guards carry the ball nowadays, but it's only useful if you're changing direction - as they accelerate players push the ball in front of them in a "legal" dribble to facilitate going faster but he just keeps turning his wrist over and only moving as fast as will accommodate this. Brown is much faster with the ball - he just doesn't always know what to do with it.

Isn't it mildly fascinating how everybody on the roster has their own individual fatal flaw(s)!

Well, despite that, we are now 48 hours until Feel Good Time (first win of the season as we crush the Mavericks of Texas-Arlington). I'm debating whether to storm the court or not, at the end!

How about taking a stroll to mid-court and giving an air high five. Then strolling back out and grabbing some Top Dogs (bock and a brat) on Center Street on the way back to BART?

Askew is using the hesitation move, while Brown is much more one speed

hesi's are one of the absolute best moves in modern basketball.. much tougher to defend. The master of the hesi is S. Curry, and on the college level the undersized ASU point guard who transferred to Kansas and won a NC

UT-Arlington may not be an easy one. They just beat USF earlier tonight. In SF. Go figure.

Good. Now they're out partying. Just wait until Wednesday afternoon, when they run into the buzz saw that is the California Golden Bears! We are wounded and hungry. Upcoming opponents beware!

Sorry to disappoint. The Center Street Top Dog now closes at 5 p.m.
Also, sad to say, there may be nothing to celebrate (except the hope for a perfect 30!)
