Traveling ... the gather step

a very misunderstood rule is traveling, and it's getting tougher and tougher to call with the new moves players are using (e.g. Hardin)

but this is as good an illustration of the 'gather step' I've seen that so many people confuse as a travel

My two biggest beefs:

1. How do you continue to guard a guy going to the hole that picks up his dribble by Euro stepping, or old school traveling (not called) without letting him score or fouling him?
The frustrating part is that good defense caused him to stop dribbling ….and then he gets to turn the table on the defender with a speed advantage as he runs through the key with the ball like he is going for a 1st down (if I am describing the "gather step," then traveling has just been assigned a euphemism and is now legal);

2.The missed traveling call that hits me on the head with a 2 x 4 (today I guess machete is more accurate) with its blatancy, is the shuffling of the feet by a player that has just received a pass and is finding his floor spot for the initiation of a 3 pointer launch.

*Bonus travel: when the offensive player receives a pass, bobbles and drops the ball and then picks it up, holds it for a couple of seconds and then starts dribbling. It's a travel and it is virtually never whistled.

I get you on #2

this one might also drive you crazy. many people think this is a travel, but it's not.

a ball handler can actually take as many steps as he wants as long as he has a live dribble. you're only limited to two steps (plus the gather) once you pick up the ball

Only travel I see is old school palming of the ball, but that infraction died 40 years ago.

When I was taught the game it was a step and a half after picking up the dribble (usually for a layup). Now the rule book says 2 steps? Which is a joke since they allow 4, or even more if you can pick'em up and put'em down fast enough. These days the dribble routinely stops at the foul line as the offensive player takes a walk through the park for a bunny.
