Shareef Abdur-Rahim for AD
Why not Sean Marks for AD?

Shareef Abdul-Rahim
Sean Marks
Amy Trask
Cynt Marshall
Paraag Marathe

Why not just throw Farhan Zaidi in there as well. Maybe Larry Baer?

Hell, bob myers will probably be looking for a new job by next year. Local kid, went to ucla. Why not

I do think the smart move would have been bringing in someone who is a smart Cal grad who knows and values our traditions, but has been successful in professional sports management and deals with budgets, profits, marketing, PR, players and their agents, hiring and firing coaches based on results…. Who has a vision for building the California athletics brand as the East Bay and state's rooting interest in the NIL era while working closely with fellow alumni booster groups.

Instead Christ hired the exact opposite and then, even after it was obvious he was a horrible fit, gave him an 8 year extension.

Hopkins won PAC-12 COY his first two years at UW but has bombed out the last three. He is yet another example of a defense first guy (scrapper himself as a player) who follows a decent recruiter and achieves better or great success by getting the existing talented players to play better defense (in his case a good defensive system)), but his style and personality makes him a poor recruiter (especially on the West Coast) and his results go down from there.
Agreed. It's not enough to be a good technical coach in college, you have to be able to recruit or you won't have long-term success. Same thing happened to DeRuyter at Fresno State, I think. Won with someone else's players, then couldn't recruit the replacements.

It is better to have the technical coach as an assistant with the charismatic positive motivator as the head coach than the other way around.

Head coach because you need to know if a guy can recruit high level talent and with an assistant coach, it's hard to tell which guys are the rainmakers and which aren't. Think of all the assistants from great programs that recruited great talent that flamed out as head coaches. If we were hiring (which I seriously doubt), we're looking to build a program up from basically nothing. We're actually recruiting against an image that says we're not serious about sports. It would take somebody with great charisma and rapport with players to convince a talented player to come here.

Mid major HC. A young, charismatic leader with experience running a program---even if it's a couple seasons.

While Tommy Lloyd is working out great with Arizona, a big factor is institutional support. He probably gets whatever he needs with minimal interference. That wouldn't happen here.

Therefore a program leader with the experience working within all phases of the university is essential. Someone more equipped in navigating the various pratfalls that a top academic public school poses.

I am not going to mention the coach in the subject line but that is the alpha and omega of our search. Even if all it does is get the practice facility funded (it will) and allow us to get an improved roster (it would) and reconnect with Bear hoops Alumni that are all in on him. There may be another candidate who is realistic for Cal that would be better but I have not heard of him.

In case you are interested the Gauchos are now 17 and 3. Rainbow Warriors gave them a good game but a 1 point win and they are flying back to UCIV a happy group of players.

Honestly we may not be able to get him. He is gong to have some offers - I would assume that Huskies if they are not IDIOTS will be at the front of the line.

You just made me check the Big West standings. Had to look up who the coach is at Riverside who has his team in 2nd place.

Mike Magpayo - Wikipedia Profile

Very interesting background. Checks some boxes for us: young, California native, UC experience (UCSB grad), former CEO of a real estate company and something our school and fan base would appreciate: In July 2020, Magpayo became the first NCAA Division I men's basketball head coach of full Asian heritage

Don't know his recruiting acumen or playing style but someone we should track.

No doubt. Between the two though one needs to go with JP because of the connections to major donors (aka the practice facility) and the AAU ties during almost a decade of working for Miller.

Those are the kind of boxes that I'm not remotely interested in ticking because none of them address the question of whether he can recruit and win. All I know about him is that he is capable of leading a winning program in a second tier conference and that he did it for a school considering shuttering its entire athletic program. That last part is interesting to me. His ethnicity, alma mater, and real estate experience are neither here nor there. That starts to get into the area where you are more interested in breaking barriers than success.

Wait, you don't want our next basketball coach to have real estate experience?!?

To me, no real estate experience = deal breaker. Kind of hoping for broker's license, too, but at the salary we'd be offering, you can't expect to check every single box.

Agree - but I want to point out that Tommy Lloyd is a bit of a Unicorn. He was designated the successor (contractually) at Gonzaga (which itself is a unicorn). He was sought out often and turned down programs much more appealing than Cal. Arizona made an EXCELLENT hire in getting him. I also believe he has an out in his UA contract to go back to Gonzaga when Few retires. Few schools others than UA could have pulled this off.

Cal has far to go to play in those waters - reinforcing your point about getting someone to navigate the current situation Cal is in.

(Apologies in advance for ignoring your rule)

This next hire should really be simple, IMO.

There are two candidates with Bay Area and/or Cal connections currently flourishing at mid-majors (which happen to also be UC's which provides an extra layer of familiarity):

1. Joe Pasternack (UCSB)
2. Russell Turner (UCI)

Either would be terrific fits for the program and both of them would seemingly jump at the chance to coach at Cal.

Sure, there are some outside-the-box HC candidates, but I have no faith in Knowlton to nail that kind of hire.

Pasternack and Turner are safe choices with upside, ties to the Bay, and proven success at the mid-major level.

This should be the easiest search ever. "Should" being the key word.

I knew it would be bad, a first year bump by forcing tougher defense then progressively worse as talent fled, I just never imagined he would be extended and the slide would be allowed to go on this long.

Knowlton fired Jones after two years, Fox running off Bradley after year 2, or Kelly after year 3 and going 8-32 in conference over the last two years should have been enough to show we were headed in the wrong direction. We should have fired Fox and hired Gates after either of the last two seasons.

The next 5 games will be brutal.

Kyle Smith gave him his start at Columbia (he left a CEO job in real estate in Orange County) and he was a Smith assistant at USF. Seems like a great guy. Born and raised in L.A. he went to UCSB. Just a guy who left a successful business career and is coaching because he loves basketball. He is smart, earnest and a tireless recruiter throughout California, New York and on the AAU circuit. He beat Pasternak and UCSB this year, last year lost in double OT and split two games the year before.
