Jason Kidd is about to take on the challenge of coaching Kyrie Irving. He may be asking about our own potential job opening in another six months.

Just our rotten luck... again: We should have the opening filled in six weeks.

(never understood the NBA teams that pay good money to put guys on their rosters who are basically cancers)

Now, with NIL, your favorite professional "college team" can do the same thing!

So COOL!

He only played one season at Duke so I think so if we can raise enough money!

I NEVER would have touched Kyrie.
As said above, he is a cancer. Or a bomb. Whatever you want to call it. A cancer spreads. A bomb blows up. Kyrie repeatedly blows himself up.

I'm just waiting for the day that he suddenly leaves basketball behind and proclaims himself to be taking up residence in Tibet. Or Amsterdam. Or he's buying a pro team in Australia as he's proved himself on the basketball court and doesn't find it challenging anymore, yet wants to be able to pull all the strings as an owner. And since he doesn't have the work ethic chops, or the intelligence, he's going to find himself $50M in debt and living off his NBA pension in Canberra... way off the beaten path where he can no longer be questioned - for answers he simply doesn't have.

After reading this, all I could think was.

"Oh. Why would the Lakers trade ANYTHING for Kyrie this season when they can get him for free in the offseason?"

Kyrie will walk from Dallas if they don't mesh, and LA will be waiting. They are already sunk this year.

But will LA have the cap space for the contract that Kyrie wants? They'll have to dump a lot of their depth (likely including Hachimura, who they just traded for).

The reason you would want him now is that you can go over the cap to re-sign him.

He has a championship. He gets unfairly criticized for not wanting to take a vaccine that did not offer him a net health benefit. The reaction to the video he linked was overblown, and he finally did apologize for it. He does carry a large cap hit and will be on the wrong side of 30 soon. Otherwise, he's a solid addition to most teams.

Actually, for me it was the flat earth stuff. Then saying he was tired of being treated like Lebron's little brother, so he goes to Boston to prove to everybody that he's a leading man, but that doesn't work so he goes to Nets and decides not to play for various reasons, all while being outspoken on various topics like he's some dna
Ty know-it-all.
He's actually just a dumb ass who doesn't know any better.

He's a great basketball player. But he doesn't realize that that doesn't translate to other aspects of knowledge.

I actually pity the fool. He's very ignorant and, well, has a lot to learn.
It's okay, we are all on our own journeys. Some other folks could be just as critical of me, or you. But as an investment? No, you can't trust him with a guaranteed long term contract.

After being in the finals with the Celtics, he went to the Nets because they signed him as a free agent when his contract expired. That's how free agency works. As far as leaving the Cavs, a lot of superstars don't like playing with Lebron. He is a ball dominant forward. I can see why a superstar point guard wouldn't want to play with him.

They'll have cap space to top the mid-level exception which is all most teams other than Dallas can offer. If they're really crazy they could renounce Hachimura and they'd have close to max contract space.

I bet they don't though.

Kyrie never made the Finals with the Celtics. The team without him made the Eastern Conference Finals after he was hurt, but that's as close as they got.

Represents him not being a good teammate. Basketball is a team sport where players must mesh together.

Here's Kyrie's most recent quote:

"I just know I want to be in a place where I'm celebrated, not just tolerated or kinda dealt with in a way that doesn't make me feel disrespected. There were times throughout this process when I was in Brooklyn where I felt very disrespected and my talent I work extremely hard at what I do, no one ever talks about my work ethic, though. Everyone talks about what I'm doing off the floor. I just want to change that narrative, write my own story and just continue to prepare in the gym, and now that I'm in Dallas, focus on what I control."

When asked what the Nets did that Irving found disrespectful, he said he could go into detail another day and continued to complain about people disrespecting him.

"I think that's another day where I could really go into detail about it. I'm not the person to really speak on names and go to someone behind their back and try to leak stuff to the media. That's never been me. I've been an audience member watching people say things about me that ultimately just falls off my shoulder ... I just know I need healthy boundaries, especially in this entertainment business. There's a lot of disrespect that goes on with people's families, with their names. I'm just not with it. It's nothing personal against any of those guys in the front office, it's just what I'm willing to accept."

I won't be shocked when the Dallas situation goes sideways for one reason or another and then he blames others - again.

And personality aside, I don't see how two ball dominant guys mesh. In Dallas, Doncic is THE man - you think Kyrie is going to be psychologically okay with being his sidekick when he couldn't be Lebron's?? No way. Kyrie is years older this time.

Jason Kidd has to be one hell of a coach to make it work!
We'll see. And I won't be blaming Jason if it doesn't. This is a human-reclamation project. Even Jason said it was a huge opportunity for him.

New York required him to be vaccinated to play home games. He refused to do so. This created a rift in the team because they needed him to win. Harden got pissed and wanted out. He got traded for draft picks and a rusty player with back issues who can't shoot, furthering the narrative that Kyrie's refusal to get vaxxed destroyed the team. KD has been injured this year, and there isn't much depth on the team. Kyrie is looking for a fresh start.

He didn't think Kyrie gave a damn about the team or winning and he was right.

That's it right there: He cares more about himself and his reputation on this flat earth than he does about the team. He had to defer to Lebron... and that's when he got his ring. But with him as "the man", forget it.

Durant apparently is always looking for a fresh start too. You can say that about nearly half of the NBA's superstars.

Yes, ex-teammates don't like it when they get spurned. Yes, Tatum and him clashed. Maybe there was conflict because Tatum was as good as him and hadn't "earned his stripes." Irving was a top 10 player on his way to becoming a top 20 player and Tatum was a rookie on his way to becoming a top 10 player.

Yes, Nets teammates didn't like that he made a choice to not play half the games. Durant, Harding, and Irving only played 16 total games together. They were 13-3. They had no issues playing together. They just never were able to.

It'll be fascinating if any dumb owner is willing to shell out the $200M contract Kyrie wants this offseason. Still an elite basketball player with the common sense of a gnat.

The Mavericks didn't trade

Spencer Dinwiddie
Dorian Finney-Smith
2027 second-round pick
2029 first-round pick (unprotected)
2029 second round-pick

For a rental.

They'd have played a lot more together if Kyrie wasn't stupid.
Wiggins wasn't stupid, and the W's won the title.

Why you giving Kyrie a pass on vaccine? He blew it, BIG TIME.

Id love to be a fly on the wall when Mark Cuban sits down 1v1 with Kyrie!

Cuban has the weight to tell Kyrie what he needs to be told.
But, I suspect that anyone who tries that with Kyrie gets Kyrie's backside.

The Mavericks didn't trade

Spencer Dinwiddie
Dorian Finney-Smith
2027 second-round pick
2029 first-round pick (unprotected)
2029 second round-pick

For a rental.

The 'Post-It!' has gone on the wall.
Oski003 predicts Kyrie signs long term with Dallas in the off-season.

What does Vegas say odds are on that?
Field vs Dallas, anyone?

It has ended poorly for every single team he has played for. If you think this is a no brainer signing with zero risk, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Correct.
Wanna know what a no-brained is?

Curry ends his career with Golden State.

Dallas has the ability to sign him to a max contract. No one else does.

Few teams have the cap space to sign him for close to that kind of money otherwise. Houston could create max space and probably will, but I doubt he's the guy they'd choose to mentor a young team. LA Lakers could get close, and they've tried to get him before, but they'd have to renounce some guys they just traded for to do it. No one else has enough without some serious machinations and those are teams like Indiana and San Antonio that probably wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.

That's some (more) good color.

Well, I suppose I'll get a chance to laugh at Mark Cuban.

To be clear, Kyrie has said in the past that he wanted a 4 year max deal for ~200M (which is what other teams could offer if they have the salary cap space). Dallas could give him a 5 year deal for like 270M.

Some questions will need to be answered though. First, can he and Luka play together? Can they stop anyone on D in the playoffs? What if they get eliminated early in the playoffs? Will any other team offer him a 4 year deal? Will the Mavs be desperate enough to overpay to try to keep him? Maybe they agree to a shorter extension if other teams aren't interested and to limit the Mavs' risk. (Even if he signs an extension, when does he become a distraction with his off court antics?)

Like I said, it will be fascinating to watch.

No team in their right mind gives that guy a big contract, but it only takes one.

I believe there is only one team who will have that kind of cap space this offseason - Houston. So unless someone pulls off a sign and trade or LAL renounce everyone they traded for it'll be Dallas. No one needs Kyrie as their veteran mentor for a bunch of kids, so Houston is pretty much out and Kyrie wouldn't want to go there anyway.
