Exactly. No more retreads in their 50s.
While this might be true, how many of us wish we were still retreads in our 50's?
Best post of the year.

Sure, we all wish we had failed in our 40s demonstrating we are below average at our jobs while getting paid $millions then get rehired at the same level to continuing failing while getting paid $millions.

Most of us have not been so lucky.

I don't blame the retreads for wanting to be paid $millions more after proving they are not worth it. I blame the idiots that hire them and pay them that.

He failed at New Orleans, going from 8, to 6, to 3 wins in league play. Good run at UCSB.
Lets put this in some context

Takes over in Fall of 2007. Goes 19-13. Has an 8-10 record in league

City still realing from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina (2005)

In fall of 2008 the university announced decision to move to D2. Players were allowed (and encouraged) to transfer. Joe runs out his 4 year contract and then gets brought on by Arizona as an assistant.

While I hate giving coaches an asterix this is a big one. It is ESPECIALLY important since, over the past 6 years, he has proven an ability to win with UCSB.

The bigger issue is shoegate. But again, at this point the NCAA cleared Miller and Pasternack has NEVER been identified as as a subject. Just a few news articles and the alleged statement of the supposed runner. If you want squeeky clean in NCAA basketball you are going to be looking for a while - and just should stick with "compete the right way" Mark Fox.

I honestly think Pasternak was deeply involved in what ever was going on in Arizona under Miller and I really don't care. It is essentially legal now. If anything, I view it as a positive given the prospects that major donors would make NIL funds available for him to direct to players.

I am not overwhelmed with him, I would not want him pre-NIL, but if he can bring the NIL money, I'm all in. That is the future. That can turn the program around quickly.

When the slot was open 4 years ago I was not high on JP. But the track record at UCSB is key - he clearly CAN manage a program and win. He got a guy like Kelly's endorsement. He checks more boxes than Turner at UCI - another guy I like.

I'm a fan of Turner at UCI.
I'm not a fan of Turner at Cal.

It seems DeCuire is having some success at Montana, but I don't hear his name bandied about for any other P5 openings other than Cal.
Life comes at you pretty fast. He hasn't been good the last few years.
That's why if a head coach has a couple of good years at a mid-major, he should leave for the first good opportunity he gets. Future success is never guaranteed.

Montana is a tough gig, tough to recruit to.

DeCuire (and Cuonzo) are now both in their 50s, which is ancient to a 16 year old.

I still think DeCuire could be successful at Cal, he would be in my top 10, but I am less enthused than 8, 6 and 4 years ago. I think a young coach with energy is needed to bring excitement and rebuild the program .
Given the salary level and status of the program, you are looking at a reread or an inexperienced coach. On the inexperienced side, I don't really see JK with the background to make that decision.

Knowlton is paid $1.3 million a year and we all agree he is not qualified to do the job of even a mid-major AD.

That is why the next basketball hire (or any coaching hire) cannot be made by Knowlton (and the search firm). We need him to have a search committee, but not a committee that he would select. We need guys he wouldn't pick, we need guys like Monty Buckley on it.

Knowlton may not be a big hoops guy, but he's great with the Olympic sports, like Women's Swi...

... er, wait a minute...

If pay for play is no longer an issue, Todd Bozeman was 122-88 in league for Morgan State.

Canzano goes in on Cal hoops again in his Pac-12 tournament preview.

California (3-28 overall, 2-18)

I grew up in the East Bay with a poster of Harmon Gym in my bedroom and Jason Kidd newspaper clippings taped all over my wall (never meet your heroes, kids). I was a season ticket holder during the Ben Braun coaching era, too. So it gives me no pleasure to substantiate the reports of the demise of Cal basketball. What went wrong?

It would be hard to pinpoint one thing so instead I'll just gesture wildly at everything. I'll start with the athletic director Jim Knowlton who enabled this mess… to the coaching staff who made the mess… a thorough house cleaning is in order in Berkeley.

Odds to win the Pac 12 tournament: Zero.
Players to watch: You're honestly better off just not.
Who isn't walking through that door: Randy Duck.

That's honestly the best coverage of Cal MBB all season.

Someone willing to speak the truth instead of prefacing everything with "Mark Fox is a good coach" no, he is not.

Way too positive, IMO.
