Can Mark Fox (sadly) save his job

The way I see it is without Askew and Clayton our guard contingent is down to Brown, Bowser, and Robinson. Depending on matchups, which I don't know enough about to analyze, we could be (relatively) OK against some teams. I don't know which.

You never know when some team will get hot or cold so I think we have some chance of beating UW, WSU, or OSU. Given our current record I think the odds are we win zero or one. I hope that would result in a new coach next season.

As much as I can't believe I'm typing this, odds are Wyking would have a better record right now than the Foxmeister does…..plus, the Foxorama and his courtside demeanor is exponentially more annoying than Wyking (who really didn't annoy me other than his W/L record and his ruckus with our beloved Theo).

What pissed me off about Wyking was how the players looked to be so completely un-coached.
Fox's guys are trying to do what he tells them. It may not be the best thing, and the players have some talent limitations, but they're more or less moving in concert. Wyking's guys looked like five guys who just met at the playground.
This. And all the players looked miserable. For me, that was the worst to observe - its about the players and they seemed to be truly suffering under Jones.
That reminds me of one I blocked out, a fourth thing that annoyed me about Jones. The players not only looking miserable, but far too often playing as though they didn't care. The lack of effort was disturbing much of the time.

While I can't say we get max effort all the time under Fox, the most surprising thing about the Fox era to me has been how often the effort is there, in spite of all that is wrong. Even when the team is down in the second half, there is often effort. Definitely more effort than Jones was able to get out of his team.

Whether Jones or Fox, however, pointing out anything positive is like pointing out the positives in the sinking of the Titanic -- well, at least they had more lifeboats than were legally required!
The cynic in me wonders about the effort under Fox. In this new transfer era, players might be playing hard for their current coach or auditioning for their next one. We'll see once the season is over and who might be in the portal...

We have seen guys dog it though, even when they have options. You can see it in body language. For the most part the body language has been good, and I do have to lift up all the players who have stayed with it and kept their spirits up. I think Askew had some things to deal with and he looked frustrated early on. I did think at some point he accepted his lot so to speak. I really feel for these guys. They deserve a lot better.

Yeah, I described us getting 3 more W's as "fairly unlikely"... probably should've been "highly unlikely". Quite possible that we rise up and beat one of either OSU, WSU or UW. Winning two of those would better fit my "fairly unlikely" scenario.

The players aren't giving up; they still want to win.

Only to turn around and hire an even worse coach leaving us to read "Cal basketball hits new lows" articles for a other 5 years.

The problem isn't Fox, it is Knowlton. Need to find a way to fire him or just give him a new role as full-time fundraiser. We just need a new AD asap.

Perhaps, but they looked like guys who played pretty good playground ball. A good assistant or two would have fixed Wyking's problem but he wasn't willing. Neither is Fox, but I doubt anyone could fix this **** because good players will not want to play for him.

So 7 games left. 4 on the road and 2 at home. The Washingtons will be favored but there is a possibility of winning those. Ditto Oregon State. As of today we would open against ASU in the conference tournie but there is such a mess right now in the middle of the conference who knows.

Any predictions? THere is no way Mark Fox _SHOULD_ be able to save job but I fear that if we got 2-5 he does. 4-3 or god forbid 5-2 or a win in the tournie and I know JK is brining him back.

I have never rooted against Cal but I am going to start. Another year of this mess is just terrifying.
Interesting math. 4 + 2 = 7. lol.
If you don't know arithmetic by the time you reach Cal, they are not going to teach it to you there. Nowadays, you might not be able to find a teacher at any level who can teach such low brow stuff. Kids just ask a calculator or a phone to do it, or so it seems.
If you don't know arithmetic you won't reach Cal.

I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing with me. My reference to "playground" was not to the individual skill level of the players, but to their ability to all be on the same page. I doubt if a good assistant or two would have fixed Wyking's problems as I didn't see a cogent strategy for offense or defense and I doubt any assistant is going to deviate from the tone set by the head coach. However, we do agree on the current Fox situation.

Wyking seemed very willing, just incapable. In 2 years, he changed multiple assistants from what I recall. Fox obviously mailed it in long ago though. I would imagine it's unprecedented for a coach to perform so horribly over a 4-year span and not change a single assistant. Of course, it's also unprecedented for a coach to perform so horribly and still be employed.

I think it was Walker who played P6 point guard and was head coach of an AAU team from Texas

Good assistant, but I don't think he was a good Xs and Os coach for D1.

Wyking did hire Tim who was suppose to be that guy, but he left after the first year

O'Toole came over from Dawkin's staff at Stanford for Martin's last season and stayed for one season of Jones before jumping to Pitt. If he had stayed at Cal for Jones' second year it would have been tied for the longest he stayed at any school as an assistant in a coaching career that stretches back to 1988. He has been at Pitt for 5 years now. He is clearly an East Coast guy and likes it there.

The players were better, is one point. A good assistant or two, given the freedom to make changes, can make a huge difference in offensive and defensive play. One example is the year Campanelli had a co-head coach who turned his pedestrian offense into something good. But the head coach has to buy in to that idea and relinquish some control and the assistant has to be good at the job. I don't think they had that kind of assistant and I don't think Wyking was secure enough to give one that kind of power.

I doubt if a good assistant or two would have fixed Wyking's problems as I didn't see a cogent strategy for offense or defense and I doubt any assistant is going to deviate from the tone set by the head coach. However, we do agree on the current Fox situation.
I recall hearing that Wyking let one of his assistants run all the practices. Don't remember their names but I believe it was the guy who came from AAU and had all of the recruiting connections.

Wyking did hire Tim who was suppose to be that guy, but he left after the first year
More accurate to say he retained Tim O'Toole, who was there for the Cuonzo years. Presumptively, Tim saw the writing on the wall and bailed first chance.

He was on Martin's staff in 15-16 and 16-17. I didn't hear much about Tim besides that he was knowledgeable, but I did hear about Wyking from two players on those teams around the time Wyking was hired but before the season began. They (correctly) predicted that Wyking would crater the program because he was lazy, unprepared, and a major *******.

If you click on that link there was no bio added yet because O'Toole was definitely on Dawkins' staff at Stanford in 15-16.

That was Gary Colson. The year he was an assistant at Cal was 1989-90, the season of the team's first NCAA tournament bid since 1960. Colson was hired as Fresno State's head coach after that season.
