I think it is more likely that he gets an extension than it is that he gets fired. The athletic dept (as I have learned over the past 7 -8 months post the realignment news) is clearly inept and broken. I think they are just trying to ride things out. There is no evidence of trying to improve our standing in the athletics space and a case can be made that they are trying to slowly suck the life out of the revenue sports so they never have to worry about it again. Think about - virtually all interested over the past 4 years in basketball is lost. Perfect strategy to reduce fans - no one now will harp for more expensive coaches or facilities and they can just pull the plug once it is announced that we are left out of the B1G.
The coffin in the nail is keeping Fox for one more year. No way he gets fired because that shows a proactive step and potential for actually being better. It also takes more work which is already a no no for Knowlton.

I get your pessimism (based on actual recent and non-recent events!). However, I'm pretty sure he's let go some time in the next few weeks. You want to bet a cyber-beverage?
If Fox is still coach at the end of March, you win. If he is relieved of his duties by March 31st, I win. Another poster didn't want to take me up on this. Will you?
(I have no insider knowledge, except what has been posted on BI. It's just that I think we've reached a low-point where even a Knowlton cannot keep him. It reminds me of Holmoe's last season.
When this is finally done and everybody has a beverage in their hands ("cyber" or not), we can all toast to the better times that will be arriving!

I sure hope he goes to the right NCAA Tournament . . .calumnus said:
Knowlton has to fire him by March 31st or we enter the new contract year and it will cost Cal an extra $1 million to fire him. Knowlton has done more fiscally irresponsible things than that, but this one seems pretty cut and dry.
PAC-12 Tournament start's Wednesday, March 8. My guess is Cal let's Fox "enjoy" the weekend in Vegas and announces he is fired when he gets back to Berkeley Monday, March 13th.
Who knows, maybe this time Knowlton and Cal representatives even use the NCAA Tournament for networking and coach search like real programs do?
I agree. He probably already knows he has been fired effective at the season end, but I'm going with March 13.calumnus said:

Lol, that's also how I'd imagine it would go down if Christ told JK to terminate Fox. Thankfully, it seems as if fed-up donors are driving the bus this time though.BeachedBear said:
It will be Friday, June 30, because:
1. End of academic fiscal year makes it easier for Jimmy's spreadsheets.
2. After April 1, so that Jimmy's buddy Mark Fox can maximize his buyout. After all, he sacrificed so much to coach in Berkeley during Covid.
3. You shouldn't terminate anyone on a Friday - so it makes sense to Jimmy.
4. All of the good coaches will have already been hired by then, making Jimmy's choice easier.
5. Announcement in the summer will get much less notice.
6. It will give Jimmy ample time to conduct a proper post season debriefing, put together a committee to select a search firm and conduct a 'listening tour' of concerned fans, players, donors, etc.
The announcement will also include the fact that Mark Fox is taking a special position within the department as Assistant Director in charge of community outreach. Contract guaranteed until 2034.
Why would you say that? You rather have Knowlton in the driver's seat again giving Fox another extension or hiring another Fox? It's about damn time some stakeholders pushed aside these ineffectual admins that have destroyed our revenue programs.Bobodeluxe said:

For far too long Cal athletics have relied upon a donor base that was willing to suffer horrific mismanagement. I welcome their driving.Bobodeluxe said:

Excellent. No hand wringing or interviewing players. Maybe major donors have spoken. Ghee iseastcoastcal said:Ahem 11 mins off from the official tweeteastcoastcal said:

I have never wanted to lose a bet more but yes, I will take you up on it. And as much as I don't like this admin and where it is taking us, I can't help but go to the football games so if you happen to be at one, I will buy you a real world beer as opposed to a virtual one.

I'm sure this is one bet you're glad you lost. If you haven't figured out a way to fax me a beer in the next five months (upcoming new BI feature?), I'll see you in the fall! (not gloating, just glad to be moving on towards better days... hopefully)
Well done! I thought of specifying before noon, but didn't because I just wanted it to happen last night when he landed...on the tarmac even. However, that would have been assuming Fox didn't spend all night on the casino floor.eastcoastcal said:Ahem 11 mins off from the official tweeteastcoastcal said:
